By Grace M Wetton (Gmw) on Wednesday, November 9, 2005 - 06:46 am:

Good Morning all. Hang onto your hat, very windy and turning colder!

By jmac (Jillann) on Wednesday, November 9, 2005 - 07:32 am:

From the wind reports I think it will probably be more than hats we have to hang on to:) Have a good day all

By lz (Llamamama) on Wednesday, November 9, 2005 - 08:06 am:

Here in south-west Michigan, the weather folk last night were predicting dire warnings of tornados, high winds, violent storms over night. I left for work at 5 A.M. this morn, a few rain drops on the walk and about 62 degrees. No storms yet, but they say it is still on it's way.

By It's Me (Yooper) on Wednesday, November 9, 2005 - 08:23 am:

Thanks Yoop!!!! Another terrific animation for my friends!!
Are you getting that white stuff up there this morn?

By WishingIWasInDaUP (Sur5er) on Wednesday, November 9, 2005 - 09:03 am:

Yooper, Thanks for the animation :)

Llamamama, what was that with the weather forcast last night? Hubby called me from the road yesterday afternoon, worried aboubt severe weather. I turned on the TV, and there were tornado warnings...but the weather was nice...and stayed nice all night long. But the weather warning definately had me a bit scared after that tornado hit Evansville IN last weekend.

Morning! No snow here in Hancock portion of the UP yet, but the winds are sure kicking up. Can even see the power poles do a little dance in the wind. It is raining a bit also. The portage canal looks a little rough, wonder what Lake Superior looks like. Winter is coming!

By Mr. Bill (Mrbill) on Wednesday, November 9, 2005 - 10:04 am:

Batten down the hatches!

The 1,000 foot, 58,000 ton STEWART J. CORT just dropped anchor in Bete Grise Bay. I bet they'll have company before this day is through ...

By Cindy Lee Maki (Cindylee) on Wednesday, November 9, 2005 - 10:46 am:

Guess I'll have to go to Bucky's to watch the waves. The way the wind is blowing the waves must be huge!

By Grace M Wetton (Gmw) on Wednesday, November 9, 2005 - 10:46 am:

MR. BILL- by any chance do you happen to have a picture of ths ship that is anchored?

By Kelly Marshall (Kelly) on Wednesday, November 9, 2005 - 10:50 am:

Oh Mr. Bill! We would love photos if you could get them without risking life or limb. It is truly the "gales of November" out there. Can't help but think of what date tomorrow is.

By Grace M Wetton (Gmw) on Wednesday, November 9, 2005 - 11:08 am:

Coast Guard ship just went through the Portage Canal heading east.

By Mr. Bill (Mrbill) on Wednesday, November 9, 2005 - 11:25 am:

We're on the lee side of Superior, and the trees are still taking a beating. The Keweenaw road crews are really busy, as we're hearing on the scanner.

Mrs. Bill is the resident digital photo / scanner ace. Here's our best shot:
xx

By Grace M Wetton (Gmw) on Wednesday, November 9, 2005 - 11:40 am:

MR & MRS BILL- thank you very much for the photo.
I'm sure others will appreciate as well!

By Margaret, Amarillo TX (Margaret) on Wednesday, November 9, 2005 - 11:54 am:

No snow here but the winds dropped us down. Kinda chilly, but not for November

By cheryl rozman (Cotton) on Wednesday, November 9, 2005 - 12:07 pm:

I pray for the safety of all that are on the lakes at this time of year. This weather has been forecasted in enough time for all the ships to be in "safe" harbor. Today the weather is too reminiscent of the storm that took place 30 years ago tomorrow. It brings back alot of memories! Hearing the wind howl, seeing the tree tops bend, the mixture of rain & snow come down. I hope that everyone is off of the lakes & is safe somewhere near shore. You'll certainly be on my mind & I'll be praying for you.

By Smfwixom (Trollperson) on Wednesday, November 9, 2005 - 12:18 pm:

Mr. & Mrs. Bill - thank you so much for the picture!

By WishingIWasInDaUP (Sur5er) on Wednesday, November 9, 2005 - 12:32 pm:

Thank you for the pic, Mr and Mrs. Bill...you folks are just too kind and thoughtful :)

I'm with Cotton...I pray for the safety of those aboard the freighters and hope they are all able to seek safe harbors. I think the tragedy of the Fitzgerald, serves as a reminder of how dangerous storms can be on Lake Superior. I can still remember exactly when I heard about the Fitzgerald...and it still saddens me.

By WishingIWasInDaUP (Sur5er) on Wednesday, November 9, 2005 - 12:35 pm:

Wow, check out the whitecaps in Copper Harbor, on Sharon's cam:

If it's that rough in the harbor, imagine what it's like on the open water!!!!!

By Former Fulton Resident (Dashamo) on Wednesday, November 9, 2005 - 01:22 pm:

Anyone have a link to the site that has wave height information from the various buoys throughout the big lake? I remember seeing it posted before.

By lz (Llamamama) on Wednesday, November 9, 2005 - 01:31 pm:

November moved into south west Michigan from my first observation this morning. Just got back from my walk break and temps are dropping the wind is whipping.
I love the fury of November gales on the big lake, but also fear for those whose work takes them out there. I was a student at MTU the day the Fitz went down. Several of us followed the big boats routinely. It became a very sad day. I will never forget that day.

By dlp (Babyseal) on Wednesday, November 9, 2005 - 02:05 pm:

Dashamo: Is the information you are looking for somewhere on this site: http://coastwatch.glerl.noaa.gov/cwdata/
Lots of information here.

By Former Fulton Resident (Dashamo) on Wednesday, November 9, 2005 - 02:18 pm:

Thanks Babyseal. Here's the direct link to the Lake Superior buoys.

By Former Fulton Resident (Dashamo) on Wednesday, November 9, 2005 - 03:20 pm:

Hey Uncle Chuck!!!! I was hoping to see the Little Betsy crew getting ready for the hunt. Hope that 4 X 4 has pontoons!

Margo, Thanks for the tip.

By Uncle Chuck @ Little Betsy (Unclechuck) on Wednesday, November 9, 2005 - 03:43 pm:

Subject: Anthrax Scare at Ford Field

Detroit, Michigan, November 9th, 2005 - Anthrax Scare At Ford Field

Detroit Lions football practice was delayed nearly two hours today after
a player reported finding an unknown white powdery substance on the
practice field. Coach Mariucci immediately suspended practice while
police and federal investigators were called to investigate.

After a complete analysis, FBI forensic experts determined that the
white substance unknown to the players was the goal line.

Practice was resumed after special agents decided the team was unlikely
to encounter the substance again.......From the internet

By Mr. Bill (Mrbill) on Wednesday, November 9, 2005 - 04:59 pm:

The STEWART J. CORT has been joined by a second large ship in Bete Grise Bay, but it's too dark, and she's swinging on anchor too much, to read her name.

BG road was totally blocked earlier by a fallen pine, but the Road Commission crews did their usual magic! Lots of trees were pruned today by Mother Nature!

By Frederic W. Koski (Fred) on Wednesday, November 9, 2005 - 05:40 pm:

Good one Tom!

By Patricia F. Doud (Callie43) on Wednesday, November 9, 2005 - 05:45 pm:

We just returned from our second ride of the day out to the Houghton Breakers.....Lake Superior is absolutely wild!! It was an awesome and beautiful sight to see.
The new parking area was crowded....it looks so different out there now that the stamp sand has been covered with grass and most of the area is fenced in.

By Cindy Lee Maki (Cindylee) on Wednesday, November 9, 2005 - 06:36 pm:

Went and saw the HUGE waves at Bucky's this afternoon. On my god, I couldn't believe my eyes. I never seen the lake so rough. Me and the dog tried to walk on the beach, but the wind and the sound of the waves were a bit to much. I should say what beach, the waves were washing up pretty high. Kinda scarey...

By Erica - Florida Keys (Erica) on Wednesday, November 9, 2005 - 07:04 pm:

I am a little weary of storms right now but I do know how awesomely beautiful they can be. Hope the winter season is a good one this year. I don't miss being in the snow and ice but I do miss seeing it--even miss breathing the cold!

By Ms. Katie (Mskatie) on Wednesday, November 9, 2005 - 07:32 pm:

Thanks all, for your descriptions of your encounters with the Big Lake! Just wish, as others stated, that I could be there too.Actually my imaginairy cabin is just near Sharon Smith's place. It's very cosy and I do a lot of art there by myself. Of course the 'puter and t.v. keep me company when I choose. I have visitors stop by a time or two each week. It looks a lot like Yoopers' little cartoons, which I really enjoy. From day-dreamer Ms. Katie :)

By WishingIWasInDaUP (Sur5er) on Thursday, November 10, 2005 - 03:02 am:

Miss Katie,
May your dreams come true.
I went on a short run, with hubby, in his semi last night. As we were headed east bound on I-94, towards the Michigan border, I remarked to hubby, "just think, one of these days, we will be headed to the UP, and it will be our household belongings that we will be hauling with the semi." :)
