It was November 26, 1919 and the Iron Package Freighter, Tioga was making its way from Superior, WI, to Buffalo, New York, hauling a cargo of grain in her freight hold. She was sailing in a blinding snowstorm and nearing the Eagle River Shoals (commonly referred to as "Sawtooth Reef") on the tip of the Keweenaw, she lost her way and ended up stranded on the reef, only to be broken up in the heavy storm. This aerial photo by E. Neil Harri shows us Tioga's final resting place, which is located almost directly off the St. John Society Monastery, as you head north past Eagle River. And, of course, if you have watched the Pasty Cam over most of the last decade, you may recall seeing the pilot house, which doubles as a shed at a home in Eagle River - -
In today's third shot, Neil took to the land to give us a perspective of what Lake Superior might have looked like on that fateful day, 86 years ago today. This one was taken during the blizzard warning the Keweenaw was under during Thanksgiving Day. Eagle Harbor Lighthouse looks a bit chilled in the blustery winds and snow!
By the way, you can help warm some hearts in Keweenaw County this year, as Sheriff Ron Lahti again is looking out for the kids who otherwise might be left out of the Christmas giving. If you could chip in a few spare shillings for Keweenaw's Toys for Kids, I'm sure it would be greatly appreciated by many people.
