The U.P. weather over the past week or so has been so unpredictable, it's predictable! By that I mean we're used to having rain one minute, snow the next and then sunshine peaking through the clouds besides. Dan Brown captured a scene that depicts all three occurrences at once. At least it looks like snow in the splash of the wave against Superior's shore and the precipitation from the clouds. Creatures like this Bluejay, pausing in between bites, for a photo shoot with Greta Jones, aren't as concerned about the changing weather. They wear the same down coat all year long, so it makes no difference if there's a dusting of snow on their dinner table or it's forming a mound, as long as they can get at the seeds, they're happy! Even with the insulating feathers to keep them warm, I've always wondered what the birds do to get out of the elements during the harsh winter winds and snow?

The lake looks great....what an awesome shot! Makes a really cool wallpaper!

The first pic is definitely a wow & is my background for today! I wonder about where the birds go, too, to get out of the elements.

beautiful shot! and thank for reminding me to pick up birdseed today. ;-)

Happy thanksgiving everyone, looks like we need to bunker down around the fire tomorrow! ;-)

A Blizzard Warning remains in effect from 5 PM this afternoon to
7 PM EST Thursday.

Snow showers and winds will rapidly increase late this afternoon
with occasional blizzard conditions developing this evening.
Northwest winds of 30 to 40 mph... with frequent gusts to 55 mph
near Lake Superior and in open areas over higher terrain... will
not only create areas of near zero visibility and considerable
blowing snow... but will also produce wind chills from zero to 10
below. Total snow accumulations of 6 to 12 inches are expected
tonight into Thanksgiving day. Winds will begin to diminish Thursday
evening... though locally heavy lake effect snow showers will
continue into Friday.

That photo needs to be the November shot for the 2006 Pastycam calendar

I heard on our local news (Houston, TX) that the Great Lakes area was gonna get hammered with snow!!! You guys can send what you don't want down here! We'd love a white Christmas.

HAPPY Thanksgiving.

The top picture really shows that we, here on earth, are not even close to being in charge. How humbling. And what great timing.

Thanks, Dan.

Lovely pics! That blue jay looks uncommonly blue -- bluer than
ours, I think. Maybe a camera filter? As for what birds do when
it gets cold and blustery or when hawks fly by, they hunker
down in bushes. Later they get out to hit the birdfeeders and
the birdbath. Which reminds me ...

Nice picture there Dan. I'm impressed.

By Kathyrn Laughlin (Kathyl) on Wednesday, November 23, 2005 - 12:16 pm:

Hi all
Regarding the birds, they especially need a good food supply in cold weather--fuel for their furnace.

It's been snowing here in the Ann Arbor area since about 9AM--the weather forecast had it starting around 3PM. Everyone drive safely, we've had reports of bad road conditions and at least one big accident on the highway. Happy Thanksgiving in advance.

really interesting top pic- is that spray or a snow squall?

By lz (Llamamama) on Wednesday, November 23, 2005 - 01:34 pm:

Wonderful pictures today! Started snowing here in SW Michigan when I drove into work (about 5:30AM). Has not amounted to much as it is rapidly approaching temps over freezing. We are supposed to get a foot in the next 24 hours. [Our weather forecasters like to tread on the side of doom and gloom.] Whatever happens, everyone drive careful and make this a good holiday!!!

Wow, love the pic of the different weather conditions over Lake Superior. WOW!
KathyL, thanks for the info on the weather in Ann Arbor. Hubby is headed home today, from a route in Wixom, so I gave him a call to let him know what lay ahead on US23...after reading your post.
Hubby called later to say that US23...all the way into Ohio is a bear. If anyone is traveling that way, please drive carefully, as the roads are slick. Thanks again KathyL :)

I think I found a WOW in the top picture! WOW!

By Margaret, Amarillo TX (Margaret) on Wednesday, November 23, 2005 - 02:35 pm:

Know everyone has the same thoughts seeing how the weather is going to be nasty. Part of the season! That bird is beautiful. We have a Jay that plays in our yard--but I don't think he gets up north very often. Happy Thanksgiving folks.

By Ken ja Mimi from da UP (Kenjamimi) on Wednesday, November 23, 2005 - 11:15 pm:

Good thing (for the birds) that I refilled my 30 gal. galvanized can with sunflower seeds today, I was out. Maybe we can call the bluejays Gobblejaws. Or should I say gobblebeaks. :o)
The wind is terrible tonight! Howling around the house and trees. Brrr! Happy Thanksgiving! to everyone, from us here in Cornell. We sure do have so much to be thankful for!!
