Mary Drew at Pasty Central (Mdrew) on Thursday, November 17, 2005 - 05:34 am:

Another season of Collegiate Hockey play is underway here in the U.P. and it looks like Tanya Voldarski was right there on the ice with NMU Wildcats (Northern Michigan University) and MTU Huskies (Michigan Technological University) facing off. I'm pretty sure she was in the stands with camera in hand for that shot, though. The second photo from Marueen Habarth, gives a broader view of the Ice Arena seating at the SDC (Student Development Complex) - Home of the Huskies. Much more comfortable than the days of outdoor hockey on the flooded neighborhood rinks! Those were the days!

Believe it or not, we have hockey here: Amarillo Rattlers. And we have kid hockey too.

By Paul Cieslinski (Paulcies) on Thursday, November 17, 2005 - 07:39 am:

You jump a step from outdoor rinks to the SDC.
Got any photo's of Collage Hockey games being played in D Stadium?

Oh man, That is a nice shot. I wish I could catch a hockey game here in Tx. In Tx its all about the bullrides or Nascar...I want hockey man...lol But, thanks to the people back home with the cameras and Pasty.com, I can catch a glimpse of what it looks like....today it was another cool on for the Texans...lol...take care everyone!

By Bill Denning (Parpagayo) on Thursday, November 17, 2005 - 09:21 am:

Sgt. Nate,

There is an AHL team in Houston, you can find their schedules & other info at http://www.aeros.com/

There are several rinks in the Houston area, the best of which being the Willowbrook Aerodrome, which is located near 1960 & 249. Their home page is http://www.aerodromes.com/

They sustained some damage during Hurricane Rita, but expect to re-open in December. There are youth & club hockey games played there & at other area rinks.

I think that Texas A&M has a club hockey team, if you're at Fort Hood, that's not too far away.

If you get up to the DFW area, there is a NHL team, check http://www.dallasstars.com/

Cheers, Bill

Go Tech! Aughh! The walks to the SDC from the dorms to see the games while I was at Tech. Boy I miss that! :)

By Capt. Paul & Dr. Nat in Texas (Eclogite) on Thursday, November 17, 2005 - 10:42 am:

Gee thanks Mary, now I REALLY want to come back to Houghton for Husky Hockey!!! But, thanks to WKMJ and the internet, I don't have to miss a game anymore. Maureen, when did you take that picture?? There are two people that look an awful lot my wife and I sitting in our season seats from a couple years ago.

Speaking of the Houston Aeros, on January 10 they play the Toronto Marlies which is nothing great, except two former MTU hockey players (and close friends of my wife and I) Brett Engelhardt and Colin Murphy play for the Marlies now. It should be a fun night, though a little odd going to an Aeros game cheering for the Marlies dressed in a Huskies jersey.

There is a lot of hockey going on here in the Houston area. The Woodlands high school has an "unofficial" hockey team and there is a rink in the woodlands that has pickup games regularly.

By SGT Nate (Sgt_nate_tormal) on Thursday, November 17, 2005 - 11:32 am:

Hey there Bill Denning, thanks for the information, I didnt really know that there was that much hockey here, I knew about the Dallas Stars and plan on catching the Detroit Redwings game on the 27th of Dec when they play Dallas. But, about the other teams....its not the same as Husky Hockey...lol Then again, I really have no option...lol Thanks again.

By Matt Sohrweide (Gomer) on Thursday, November 17, 2005 - 11:46 am:

I just wanted to say thanks to Tanya for taking pictures of the MTU games. I went to look at her other pictures and found my wife and myself in the background at the UMD game! It brought a smile to my face.

The huskies come out here to grand forks the last weekend of the regular season to take on the Fighting Sioux, so if any other yoopers wanna see one of the finest hockey arenas in the world, its well worth the trip and everyone from back home thats seen the place agrees.

By Lorelei (Lorelei) on Thursday, November 17, 2005 - 03:59 pm:

Derek,
I have driven by the rink in Grand Forks quite a few times and it is beautiful from the outside. I have never had the chance to go in. Someday I will tho. We are either in a hurry to get where we are going or in a hurry to get home when we pass it.

For those interested in local hockey history, my husband's grandfather played on the 1924-25 Portage Lake Hockey Team, as well as the 1924-25 USNRF Hockey Team. Click on the links above to see the composite team photos we have posted in our Pasty Cam guest gallery. There may be other people reading this who have relatives in these photos. We've already heard from one of them!

I remember the last time I was in Dee Stadium there was a girl running up and down EVERY stairwell in there. From beginning to end she never slowed her pace. What a workout.

I'm in Colorado, and we tried to make it into the game in Denver a couple weekends ago, but they were sold out! We drove quite a ways and got stuck in a traffic jam only to have them tell us there's no room! At least we tried...

wow!!!!! I miss MTU hockey games....I spent every weekend there at home games for four years... fell in love with Kip Noble....along with every other local high school girl. I still have the hockey stick he gave me....(we just moved and my husband threatened to put that in the dump pile, I said NEVER!!)enjoyed many games there....and players...Shawn Harrison, Brian Harrison, Jon Archibald, Randy McKay, and can't forget goal tender Tiger Pierce....a lot of fun and many great memories...such a fan devoted atmosphere, hockey fans are the best...and can't forget the pep band..."in heaven there is no beer"
can't wait to get up there again and see a game
