It's getting to be that time of year when folks will be looking to warm up with a hot sauna. This crew was captured on film by Brita Haapala, as they're putting the finishing touches on a new sauna building. Hard labor, but well worth the sweat put into it when you fire up that stove and luxuriate in the hot steam. Looks like a great setting to have a relaxing sauna bath too, with the winding Keweenaw road taking you there giving an idea of the solitude to be found upon arrival.

Looks like fun, to me.

By Randall Ollila (Rwolli) on Thursday, November 10, 2005 - 07:42 am:

By Bob Turnbull (Termoil) on Thursday, November 10, 2005 - 08:26 am:

Good morning every one.
Seeing these picture makes me truly jealous of what every one up there has. I wish I could convince my family that we need one in our back yard.

By JOHN AND ANNE KENTUCKY (Username) on Thursday, November 10, 2005 - 08:49 am:

Looks like a great project. One of those jobs that is tough work but fun at the same time. I am sure the end result will be very rewarding. No snow up there yet?

By Bryon J. (Bryonj2255) on Thursday, November 10, 2005 - 08:55 am:

Wow! That will be a nice sauna!

30 years ago today, 90 mile an hour winds combined with 30 foot seas, brought The Edmond Fitzgerald to her end. God bless the 29 brave men who lost their lives in the freezing depths of Lake Superior...

There's a number of posts on the What'sUP page regarding this memory today...including information on listening to the Memorial Service tonight, via webcast. Click here to get there: Nov. 10th What'sUP page

Lets not forget those who sail the Great Lakes and lost their lives due to storms that cause huge waves like the storm that claimed the Edmund Fitzgerald on 10 NOV 75. My Brother is sailing the Lakes today, he is on the Columbia Star, a 1,000 footer...I have a lot of respect for those who choose to sail the mighty lakes.

By Eddyfitz (Eddyfitz) on Thursday, November 10, 2005 - 12:34 pm:

Todays winds are a reminder of what these ships encounter every fall.God bless those 29 men and their surviving families.
Here is my little contribution to the history of the EDMUND FITZGERALD..

Great idea Alex, I'll bring the cedar boughs and beverage!

By Lulubelle/Hancock (Lulubelle) on Thursday, November 10, 2005 - 02:10 pm:

Happy Belated Birthday, Hans. He is one of the men in this picture of the log sauna. We remember the 30th anniversary of the day the Edmund Fitzgerald sunk and the day the big hay barn fell over at Hans' house.

By Pauline (Yooperinpa) on Thursday, November 10, 2005 - 02:17 pm:

Great links to the great ships of the UP. Thanks for sharing.
Neat "sowna" EH!

By Danbury (Danbury) on Thursday, November 10, 2005 - 02:39 pm:

There's a Hans in there?!? Ok, which one is it?
Happy Birthday, "Namensvetter" - with a german name, you might even know that term! :)
(or know somebody to tell you what it means)

By 69 TOOT (Flyindamooney) on Thursday, November 10, 2005 - 06:55 pm:

The "Winds of November" are deadly. It is the most dangerous month for flying or boating, even on a 700 plus footer..... This pilot takes November very seriously.......and winds are always the major consideration.

By Catherine--Holland MI (Catherine) on Thursday, November 10, 2005 - 09:34 pm:

This looks like it could be an old-fashioned "noki" sauna--
built on the side of a hill with a fire hole in the floor and a
smoke hole in the roof. The men would crawl up under the
building to build the fire on the slope. You couldn't sit or
touch the walls or you would come out all noki (sooty).

By Ken ja Mimi from da UP (Kenjamimi) on Thursday, November 10, 2005 - 11:27 pm:

You mean the old 'savu sauna'? The smoke sauna, that's where the soot came from. :>) There was one of them at one of the places where we lived in Paavola, when I was a piku poika. Art Pyyokonen (sp?) was the name of the man who owned the place. Must've been '46 or '47.

By Alex J. Tiensivu (Ajtiensivu) on Friday, November 11, 2005 - 05:06 pm:

Is there still a public sauna in Calumet? I used to go there when I was a kid!

By Alison P (Ricelakealison) on Sunday, November 13, 2005 - 10:13 am:

No, sorry to say, it closed up 5 or 6 years ago. But not before we made enough trips to it for it to be a lasting memory for our kids. Now we have our own log sauna looking over Rice Lake.
Priceless.

By Alex J. Tiensivu (Ajtiensivu) on Sunday, November 13, 2005 - 12:20 pm:

Thanks for the info. It's sad that so many things change!
