Alpha is a small village, with a 2000 census population listing of 198, located near Crystal Falls. The latter is where today's photographer, Lois Haglund calls home, so she must have been taking a drive to get this shot of the Historic Alpha Town Hall and water tower. Both of these town landmarks are located in the center of the village, on a hill which overlooks Alpha Creek. If you're looking for this little town, head south from Crystal Falls on US-141/US-2, until you see Split Rock. That's at the intersection of highway 424, then head west and you can check out the historic buildings yourself.

After all the years of struggle in splitting the rock, what a shame the tree didn't leaf out this year.

Many small towns are overlooked, sadly.

The tree in Split Rock has been dead for a few years. I believe it was a pine. I have driven by the Split Rock for many years and can remember the tree declining. Sad it see it is not living. It is still standing and marked. Maybe another tree will take its place some day.

Now Alpha sounds like my kind of town, with such a small population. ;)

We used to drive back behind the Brevort "bear dump" and see a much bigger split rock out in the middle of nowhere. Anyone have a picture of that? I know I used to have one from when I was a kid, but don't know where it is now.

Use to run between Kingsford, MI and Phelps, WI - and often took the back roads. Pretty area back there - slower route tho - seems to me there was another small town in there -- guess I will have to get out my maps -

Afternoon All.
Looking at the tree at Split Rock the branches are shaped more in line with Oak or Maple trees. Enjoy the day everyone.

The tree that split the rock at "Split Rock" was a white pine. And lo and behold, there is a new white pine starting to grow next to the old dead tree. Mother Nature is amazing.....

That's my home town!! A great place to eat in town is the 424 Store. If you want to eat the largest sub sandwich in the U.P., stop on down there.

Alpha is one of my favorite places. I will be at camp for 2 weeks in november, wich is a mile south of Alpha. The subs at the 424 store are delicious and huge. Alpha also has a amazing fireworks display on the 4th of July.
