Mary Drew at Pasty Central (Mdrew) on Wednesday, November 2, 2005 - 05:38 am:

I don't ever recall the leaves hanging on as long as they have this year and for the most part they've all pretty much run their course and fallen to the ground. But there are still a few hanging on and surprisingly enough I noticed a couple trees still decked out in brilliant red on my walk this morning. They, like the leaves in these photos taken by William Pekuri, were located near water, which I think has something to do with the late blooming colors. Lake Superior takes on a different type of beauty with each passing season and fall morphing into winter is no exception.

Big news here in the Keweenaw... Pasty Central is expanding! Find out more about it in today's What'sUP, with news of a bigger baking kitchen and announcement of The Hut-Inn's planned re-opening in the spring!

By Smfwixom (Trollperson) on Wednesday, November 2, 2005 - 05:53 am:

Great news about Pasty Central expanding and The Hut Inn's re-opening! Thanks for the great pictures again today! Wish I were UP there!

By Margaret, Amarillo TX (Margaret) on Wednesday, November 2, 2005 - 07:11 am:

Both pictures are gorgeous. Wish I could be there to walk along the beach.

By lz (Llamamama) on Wednesday, November 2, 2005 - 07:15 am:

Thanks William - my new background! Beautiful.

By WishingIWasInDaUP (Sur5er) on Wednesday, November 2, 2005 - 08:12 am:

Beautiful pics. What I wouldn't give to be walking on the beach today...because I could use it to clear my head from all this legal work. Sigh.

By derek tuoriniemi (Derek) on Wednesday, November 2, 2005 - 08:34 am:

ah, trees and water, 2 things that north dakota lacks, those pics sure make me miss home in the u.p.

By Lorelei (Lorelei) on Wednesday, November 2, 2005 - 08:44 am:

Where is this picture taken? Sure looks like it could be either Agate Beach or Misery Bay. Wherever it is, it sure is a beautiful sight. I just love it. Great Job William.

By Lisa (Lakesuperiorkid) on Wednesday, November 2, 2005 - 09:22 am:

PLEASE tell us where this is taken!!!

By Yooper in MN (Yooper_in_mn) on Wednesday, November 2, 2005 - 09:23 am:

My guess is Misery Bay. I spend many afternoons there during my time at MTU.

By Jeff Kalember (Jeffkal) on Wednesday, November 2, 2005 - 09:36 am:

i stepped outside last night about 10pm to view the stars in the clear night sky.... wishing I was on the shore of lake superior in the crisp 34 degree temps, sitting by a fire, wrapped in a blanket... smelling the smells of autumn...

By Dave Zelisse (Davedatroll) on Wednesday, November 2, 2005 - 09:39 am:

Mary, you are right about this being an odd year with the leaves... still have a lot clinging on here in troll land too; can't recall having this much color around in November, not that I'm complaining! Tee Hee!

Congrats on the new kitchen, and I'm GLAD to hear the Hut is reopening next year!

By Stephanie (Stefani13) on Wednesday, November 2, 2005 - 09:53 am:

Hallelujah about the Hut! Our yearly trek back home was not the same without a visit to the Hut.

By Marsha, Genesee/Aura (Marsha) on Wednesday, November 2, 2005 - 10:03 am:

Beautiful pics with nice composition!

By david sandretto (Yooperdfs) on Wednesday, November 2, 2005 - 10:06 am:

I have to confess that I took the Hut for granted until it closed. It had been such a constant in the Keweenaw throughout the latter 1900's that I think everyone was surprised when it closed. It will be great to see it reopen.

By happyooper (Trigal) on Wednesday, November 2, 2005 - 10:20 am:

I think these pics are taken between McLain's and Calumet Waterworks. My mom and dad have a camp between there, and the top picture looks like the small river that runs under M203 and into Lake Superior. We used to catch frogs at this river and build bridges with driftwood and rocks. Be careful though, it's full of leeches!

By Cathy McKenzie (Cathy) on Wednesday, November 2, 2005 - 10:21 am:

My guess is the pictures look like they were taken in Eagle River.

By dlp (Babyseal) on Wednesday, November 2, 2005 - 10:29 am:

Very nice pictures. When I saw the first one I thought it was Joyce Tormala's pictures of the mouth of the Sleepy River in Ontonagon county. Maybe Bill was there instead? Doesn't matter where they were taken I guess, Lake Superior is splendid everywhere.

By Lynn Virtanen (Lynn) on Wednesday, November 2, 2005 - 11:11 am:

The top picture looks like the mouth of the Big Elm at the end of the trail at Agate Beach just about a 1/2 mile NE of Misery Bay. There is a stump about 2' tall in the lake just nanometers off the right edge of the picture which is causing wave distortion evident on the back right of the long wave hitting the beach. That's what I think.

By Lynn Virtanen (Lynn) on Wednesday, November 2, 2005 - 11:15 am:

After looking at Bill's album, I could stand to be corrected.

By Lynn Virtanen (Lynn) on Wednesday, November 2, 2005 - 11:33 am:

After looking at Joyce's album I am sure that the least of my bad guess was getting my Elm's (big and little) mixed up

By happyooper (Trigal) on Wednesday, November 2, 2005 - 11:35 am:

The pictures are definitely taken between McLain's and Calumet Waterworks. On the second page of Bill's album where Jari is exploring the lakeshore is the same river, with McLain's at the very tip of the land in the background, approximately a mile away.
Ah, that used to be my morning run years ago..

By Frederic W. Koski (Fred) on Wednesday, November 2, 2005 - 11:44 am:

My first thoughts were the elm river, I forget which is the "Big" and "Little" elm. I haven't been there in about 30 years.

By gb (Gra) on Wednesday, November 2, 2005 - 01:25 pm:

This looks like the beach we spent many, many enjoyable days at Smith's Creek on M 203 Calumet

By William Pekuri (Wcpekuri) on Wednesday, November 2, 2005 - 02:48 pm:

GB is right. I think that's Smith's Creek. I sure miss the Copper Country. We spent a lot of time at McLains State Park when I was a student at Tech.

ser5ver: Never ever give up. Stand up for what you believe in and follow thru.

By Sally/Hocking (Twinb) on Wednesday, November 2, 2005 - 08:45 pm:

So this isn't Eagle River???? I guess I need to get up to the UP...made much more exciting with the HUT reopening...yahoo!!!! Congrats to Charlie and all the folks who are and surely have been working very hard on all of the changes. THANKS!

By Arnold Loukinen (Arniedafinn) on Wednesday, November 2, 2005 - 08:59 pm:

The top picture sure looks like the mouth of the Little Elm at Agate Beach to me. In any event, sure makes one miss the beach and the UP. Appears as if it could be numerous rivers emptying in to Lake Superior by all of the guesses posted.

By WishingIWasInDaUP (Sur5er) on Wednesday, November 2, 2005 - 10:34 pm:

Bev,
You are too kind...thank you so much for your kind words. Yep, standing up for what is right, is the only to go. Thanks for the pumpkin you emailed me...I had fun drawing on it. After a day in court, it was a great stress reliever ;)

By Capt. Paul & Dr. Nat in Texas (Eclogite) on Thursday, November 3, 2005 - 10:47 am:

I'll admit I have no clue where the pictures are, but it sure is pretty. I would love to just sit on that beach and reflect for a while.

And as far as the leaves still being on the trees near the shore it makes sense; the shorelines are always a little warmer than inland so the leaves should traditionally stay on the trees longer, even into early November. You see this behavior in the Rockies too. The mountain side aspens will always drop their leaves long before the valleys even turn in most cases. We saw this a lot in southwest Colorado near Silverton a couple weeks ago.

By David Antioho (Daveantioho) on Thursday, November 3, 2005 - 11:54 am:

Thank You William. I too spent many a summer day for years at this location. I knew where it was at first glance. Has not changed in 40 years. My Grandfather had a cottage close by that we came to, getting away from the heat in town and just being able to run wild. Often had to get the leaches (we called them bloodsuckers) burned off after an extended time in what we called Schmidt's creek. MapQuest shows 3 creeks join and the only one named is Bear Creek

By Jeremy Rowe (Jeremyrowe) on Thursday, November 3, 2005 - 02:19 pm:

My prayers are answered! The hut is opening again. So many times I have craved eating there but couldn't in the last year or so. Please tell me there will be the same steakburger deluxe, fries and ranch dressing as there were in the past!

By Capt. Paul & Dr. Nat in Texas (Eclogite) on Thursday, November 3, 2005 - 05:35 pm:

Gee thanks Jeremy, I think you made everyone on PastyCam hungry (me included)!!! ;-)

By LoisHart (Lhart) on Saturday, November 5, 2005 - 12:58 am:

I'm with you, Sally--Eagle River Beach!

By Lisa (Lakesuperiorkid) on Friday, December 2, 2005 - 03:23 pm:

Dave Antioho - Yes, this is "Schmitt's Creek" - My siblings and I grew up at the Voelker Cottage just down from Antioho's in the 60's, 70's and 80's. Now we take OUR kids down to the creek and skip rocks, re-route the mouth of the creek and swim in it's warm pool.... oh to be a kid on that beach again, wasting the summers away....
