By Charles in Adrian (Charlesinadrian) on Thursday, October 13, 2005 - 09:49 am:

On Tuesday I wrote a note mentioning a wonderful new book I
found in Ann Arbor. It is called "Hiking Michigan's Upper
Peninsula," and it is by Eric Hansen. One reason I liked it was a
hike he mentioned into the mysterious wilderness McCormick
Tract. I had always known that tract was in western Marquette
County, but I had never known how to get to it. After writing
about that hike, Don Elzinga wrote in to say just how grand that
area is, and I would like to thank him for that note. Reading
further in the book I found Hansen has another hike into the
McCormick Tract from the east. All you have to do is drive 20
miles out of Big Bay going south and west on dirt roads (not in
my new Honda cried my wife!), and you are at the trailhead
going to "the Falls of the Yellow Dog." I had never even heard of
the Yellow Dog before, but, oh!, does that hike sound like fun!

By WishingIWasInDaUP (Sur5er) on Thursday, October 13, 2005 - 09:50 am:

Morning everyone :) The sun is finally shining here. I was going to spend the day outside enjoying the sunshine and fall air...only the paperwork I thought I could turn in Monday, has to be turned in tomorrow. Sigh.

Hey Yooper, your image reminds me of someone...oh yeah, the attorney that won't let me go outside and play today. ;-)

By Margo (Margo) on Thursday, October 13, 2005 - 09:54 am:

Japei. Again the photos are exquisite. The fall is the most beautiful time of the year here in the east and midwest. We are very fortunate to have the variety of trees.

Interesting to see George Hite's summer cruise map on his home page. No new journal entry yet. Does he sail alone?

By lz (Llamamama) on Thursday, October 13, 2005 - 01:45 pm:

Great pictures on both Cam Notes and What's Up!
Thanks Yooper, another great one!

Ms. Katie, thank you for your information yesterday and I will look up that author. Not much of a story on my user name - I own and raise llamas as a hobby (husband would probably use the term addiction), but it keeps me sane. No one I know calls me by my name anymore, it is llama lady or llama mama. ;o)

By Alex J. Tiensivu (Ajtiensivu) on Thursday, October 13, 2005 - 07:47 pm:

I may post this again tomorrow, because it's so late tonight! But here is my new Pasty Central photo album. https://pasty.com/pcam/ajtiensivu Right now, I have pix of our pasty adventure at Fran in GA's house this past weekend.

By Alex J. Tiensivu (Ajtiensivu) on Thursday, October 13, 2005 - 07:49 pm:

Well, that didn't work! I guess you have to look up ajtiensivu or Alex Tiensivu. (Shrug).

By Marsha, Genesee/Aura (Marsha) on Thursday, October 13, 2005 - 08:27 pm:

I did click on your name in photographers' links and got page 1 of the guest photo gallery! What's up, Mary or Charlie?

Mary says: What's up, is that Alex, being a typical male gender person, didn't read the instructions for his gallery, telling him to make his gallery visible for EVERYBODY to view! Operator troubles you might say! :-> It's all set now!
P.S. to Alex...the pasties look great!

By Charlotte, Mishawaka, IN (Charlotte61) on Thursday, October 13, 2005 - 09:54 pm:

Charles in Adrian, a few years back my husband and I stayed at Big Bay Lighthouse and hired a guide to take us hiking. The Yellow Dog falls was the first place we hiked to--it was a great hike. The whole hike was something I'm glad we did. We would never have found the falls and most likely we would have never been found.
The weather here in Mishawaka was a beautiful fall day today. So nice after all the cloudy days we've had. The best part was I didn't go into school today--husband's aunt passed and the funeral was today. The sun made it feel like Aunt Theresa was smiling on us. She lived to 97--what a live she lived. After I got back from the funeral and dinner I enjoyed a nice fall bike ride.

By Ken ja Mimi from da UP (Kenjamimi) on Thursday, October 13, 2005 - 11:48 pm:

Yesterday I was enjoying a walk along the hardwoods here when two large Vs of Sandhill Cranes came by. There must have been hundreds of them! Are those things LOUD! They were going from northeast to southwest, maybe toward the Ford River or the farm fields near Perronville. They were probably 150 or 200 feet AGL. (above ground level)

By Alex J. Tiensivu (Ajtiensivu) on Friday, October 14, 2005 - 01:10 am:

Male gender mess up! (LOL). Thanks, Mary!

By WishingIWasInDaUP (Sur5er) on Friday, October 14, 2005 - 02:58 am:

Alex,
Thanks for the pics of the pasties...they look delish. So are you gonna share your secret pasty recipe?

By Susan Caryl (Gilbsulmum) on Friday, October 14, 2005 - 03:30 am:

Well, Sur5er, the trip was grand....and Fran, destination in Tennessee was Jonesborough...northeast corner, not far from Kingsport (where we stay) and Johnson City. Jonesborough is the oldest town in Tn...used to be the capitol when it was the state of Franklin. Only about 2000 people, but for that one weekend in Oct, it swells to about 12,000. The people are great hosts, the town quaint and lovely, and the stories, well, they would make ANY place great! Kind of drippy weather for the most part this year, but sun came out Sunday just in time to make everyone NOT want to leave!

By kosk in Toronto (Koskintoronto) on Friday, October 14, 2005 - 07:34 am:

Susan--

You must be the Susan from Florida, who like
me, loves storytelling festivals. Are you also a
teller? I wish I were. Another teacher and I
are trying to incorporate storytelling into our
drama program.

By Susan Caryl (Gilbsulmum) on Friday, October 14, 2005 - 07:39 am:

Kosk...no, not a teller, just an avid listener. Sometime you should try and make the National Storytelling Festival in Jonesborough. Oldest in the country, although I'm not sure how it stacks up against Canada. Thirty third year. Have been going since 1985 with just a couple of misses.

By Susan Caryl (Gilbsulmum) on Friday, October 14, 2005 - 07:55 am:

Kosk...how are you going about incorporating the stories? Are you hiring tellers, do you have access to some? Maybe you are a latent teller and just unaware! :) You'd be surprised how many children are very good. The festival includes a session of "youthful voices"....kids from 6 to 17. And one of the pros last year (Bil Lepp) asked if his son could come up on stage for a minute and tell...he was 4. Of course, the audience agreed, up he came, absolutely no trace of stage fright in front of a couple of thousand folks and proceeded to tell...had a few sound effects and got a bit carried away with them, his dad came up quietly behind him to tell him to do a bit less of the effects and wrap it up. Well, that kid drew himself up to his full 2 and a half feet, assumed a very haughty and displeased demeanor and in no uncertain terms informed his father that "Excuse me, but I'm telling this story!" What a cutie. Guess he's on his way! :)

By Nancy Pritchard (Kate) on Friday, October 14, 2005 - 11:47 am:

Just returned from a visit to see family and fall colors in the U.P. Happened to be in Copper Harbor the night of the big lightning and thunderstorm. It was said to have rained almost 4 inches that night. Spectacular waterfalls the next day. Sure enjoyed the folks there. I got some great photos while travelling, will try to share a few glimpses of my U.P. experience. The colors were breathtaking. I highly recommend Hermit cookies from the Jampot, breakfast at the Tamaracks, Brockway Mountain Drive, Eagle River Falls and a stop at the second hand shop in Hancock!

By WishingIWasInDaUP (Sur5er) on Friday, October 14, 2005 - 12:44 pm:

Susan, Glad to hear that you had a wonderful trip. How far is Jonesborough from Tazzwell?

Kate, Now you have me missing da UP...and really hungry too. Ok, I give, what exactly are Hermit Cookies?
