A bog is described as wet spongy ground which is poorly drained and usually growing plant material such as this strange, but interesting specimen discovered by Bob Gilreath on a recent camping trip to Emily Lake State Forest Campground, two miles south of Twin Lakes. This looks like a 'pitcher plant', which is a carnivorous plant, eating insects that manage to get inside the tube, then can't climb back out due to the downward pointing hairs. Not real pleasant sounding! The second forest decoration, observed by Joyce Tormala, is an upside down fungi, hanging on quite perilously. Check out the backdrop of fall foliage and blue skies!

Wow, neat pics of vegetation. I must admit, that I have never seen the likes of the pitcher plant before. And I have never seen a mushroom grow upside down either. ;)

Bogs are neat places, emily lake is clear enough that I was able to look under it also.
Getting this shot was fun, the wind was blowing me away from the bog in my kayak and I was trying to hold on to the edge while shooting one handed with the camera hanging over the water. ;-)
This is one of 3 shots I had to take to get one clear enough to see. ;-)

We camped at Emily Lake several times this past summmer. Although we spent most of the time on the boat fishing, I wish I would've known there was a bog! Great shots.

Bogs are really wonderfull places. I can remember camping by one in northren Wisconsin where you could jump on one end and send a wave across the "ground" on this floating bog. They are also known to preserve dead animals due to the acids and and other compounds found there. There was a deer that remained more or less intact for a couple years.

Trigal,
It's in the north west bay for future reference. It basically wraps around the whole end of that bay really neat place.

There are TONS of mushrooms in the woods right now. Wish I knew something about them.

They seem to me to be scary and beautiful at the same time depending on which way one happens to perceive them. Usually scary to me. Who knew what LURKED just beneath the surface that would be waiting patiently for the next unsuspecting prey to wander by within reach to be grabbed and pulled DOWN into the uncharted dark depths of the bottomless BOG never to be heard from again. The only evidence to be left being a BURP of methane maybe days, weeks,or even months later. Good thing you had a sturdy kayak!

I wonder if this mushroom started out growing upright and then ended up in its present configuation when the tree it was growning on tipped over?

That mushroom could feed the entire state! I've NEVER seen anything like that in my life!

Haloween is that rare conjunction of a full moon during The 31 st of Oct when on a clear night the ice crystals high in the atmosphere form one of natures rare perfect circles by forming a rainbow around the moon causing all creatures to HOWL in the dark.

Paul, go to Friday 10/21/05 for pictures of the 1929 Orton steam dredge. They are on the What's Up page.
I have some that I haven't put in my album yet. My brother and I were riding the Mt. Bohemia ski lift when we heard a steam whistle. We couldn't believe our eyes when we saw it! I also took some pics at ground level.
