Jim and I had the pleasure of spending a few days doing the tourist thing, right in our own backyard, so to speak. We happened upon this scene taking place at the Copper Harbor Mercantile and were quite fascinated with the art form used to create these crafty looking creations. After watching Dave Weatherhead (that's him in the third photo), from Hayward, WI, for awhile, we were still quite amazed that he could carve away at a chunk of wood with that big clunky chain saw and create the details he does in each completed piece. You just never know what surprises you'll find as you travel around the U.P.!

Very nice art work relating to our North country. Now if one would like to purchase his creations, it would be beneficial to have his e-mail address or more information, or his website.
Mary says: Unfortunately all Dave gave me was his name, no email, website or other information. I checked with the folks at the Copper Harbor Merchantile and they didn't have a business name or card either, but they do sell some of his work there.

Glad to see him wearing the appropriate safety equipment! Even little chainsaws can do a lot of damage if they hit the wrong spot.
I'll add my goodmorning from Mishawaka, IN also! It's always a pleasure to see my home town of Copper Harbor when I do my daily (or almost daily) check-in at pasty.com! I've always wanted a bear like that to put in my yard here in Indiana. It'll make me feel a little more like I'm back home in Copper Harbor where the real bears roam through the yard! How can we get one?

Good Morning from Maryland. Just a bit of info on "Chainsaw Carving". An actual course is offered in Hayward Wis, I was up to the center of the state last week and found two stores with similar products, neat to look at, and the fun a person could have making big logs into little cute ones. The site is http://www.chainsawcarvingschool.com/

I love these wooden bears. I want one :)
A few corn fields over, a farmer had a cousin that would come out in the summer and carve bears out of wood, like this. The farmer placed one of these massive bear carvings at the edge of his driveway...and it became the icon of the town. You know, "when you come to the large bear carving, head west..."
One Mother's Day, we were driving past the farmer's house...and there was no bear. Instead, there was a sign in its place, "Who stole my bear?". Seems that someone needed a gift for Mother's Day...drove past the farmer's bear statue...and decided it would make a nice gift for Mother's Day. :(
Now the farmer has a carving of a bear's face, on the end of a huge log. Let's see someone try to cart that one off, eh.

In 1960 as we were descending the Brockway Mountain Drive into Copper Harbor we stopped for a black bear. I grabbed the 8mm movie camera and set it for slow motion, and caught him as he ran across the road. It makes a great video clip, we had our movies put on to a DVD but I haven't learned how to extract a scene yet to put on the internet. In regards to the chain saw safety equipment, I had to testify in a case where the guy was wearing the chaps but was still able to cut into his thigh muscle! The chaps saved him from going completely through the thigh. The judge threw the case out.
