Referring to yesterday's What'sUp:
Even though I'll have no use for it, Charlie's post answers a question I was rolling in my mind for the time should I ever go UP - where to go for a PastyCam-Pasty, if I may call them that.
Sorry, Mr. Hopper, but there's no way I'll ever imagine you as "Chopper", even though it's obvious where it came from. Any chance to see you on a hog? :)
sur5er: despite nowhere in a situation like yours, I know how that feels. though my machinery gets probably three to for times the mileage of your truck (assuming it's a fullsize-V8) - think two wheels only. Good to have when the gallon hits roughly six bucks plus.
By the way, just to make sure - did you receive my mail?

By maija in Commerce Township (Maija) on Monday, September 5, 2005 - 09:39 am:

Well, Danbury, where you are people can get around on foot or bike, or mass transit. Here, you need a vehicle, and for a family you need more than one.

I grew up in a one-vehicle family, (actually was born before they had a car) but we lived in Detroit where my mom was able to walk everywhere or hop a bus. Not so anymore!

morning,
thanks for the shots of the big mac...i walked it a few times when i used to be a yooper. this time of year is when i really start to jones for the U.P. the bridge walk, bird season, and deer camp...as the old saying goes you can take the boy out of the U.P. but you can't take the U.P. out of the boy. I've lived in a lot of places and home is where you hang you hat but the U.P. will always be home even if i never get back.

Danbury,
Oh yeah, that baby of mine is an 8...is there any other kind of truck to own?
How Sur5er got her truck:
We had to leave my vehicle in Michigan when we moved to Indiana, so hubby got me this little sport number, because he felt bad because I had to leave Michigan, and everything behind. I hated that car...so I would take his beat up truck everyday, in order to avoid driving that small car.
Everytime I saw a truck on the road, the kids and I would sing a truck jingle...which would drive hubby up the wall. In addition, I made sure to leave the new truck ads from the newspaper promptly displayed on the breakfast table each morning for hubby.
Hubby did not stand a chance...besides, if getting in and out of that small sporty car was a pain for me, with my height, it had to be a pain for hubby.
So, less than a month after we moved to Indiana, hubby and the kiddies decided to go birthday shopping for me. A couple of hours later, I received a phone call:
Hubby: "What color do you like, red, black, white or gray?"
Me: "For what?"
Hubby: "Just pick a color."
Me: "Black."
Hubby: "Hmmm....nope, they don't have a black one."
Me: "But that was one of the color choices you gave me."
Hubby: "I thought red was your favorite color..."
Me: "Nope...red is your favorite color."
Hubby: "Pick red."
Me: "But whatever it is, red is too bright. I ain't wearing anything red. I don't want red, anything."

A couple of hours later, hubby, daughter and step son arrive home...and they told me to go outside to the driveway. And there was my brand new red truck...red as red could be. Needless to say, red was now my favorite color.

So I was jumping up and down in the driveway...all excited about my new truck...and I leaned over and whispered to hubby, "dang, if I get a truck for my birthday, I can't wait to see whatcha get me for Christmas."

How red and big is Sur5er's truck? The fire chief in town had the exact same bright red truck.:-)

sur5er, I thought you were going to Michigan this weekend. (Not the UP)? How was your trip? I've only been over the Big Mac once and it was a thrill. Wish I could be there now. Another great ride was a tunnel/bridge on Cheasapeak Bay!

By WishingIWasInDaUP (Sur5er) on Monday, September 5, 2005 - 01:01 pm:

Ms. Katie, I had a wonderful time in Michigan...I was gone from Wednesday through Sunday for a girlie girl get away. Nope, we didn't make it to the UP this time...which was a first for us, as we always make at least one run across the Mighty Mac each summer, together.
We did however, make a day of it up at Frankenmuth ...which was a lot of fun. ;-)

By maija in Commerce Township (Maija) on Monday, September 5, 2005 - 01:24 pm:

sur5er: "up in Frankenmuth" cracked me up, no offense. To me that's "down" here! Good place to go for a girl thing, though.

By WishingIWasInDaUP (Sur5er) on Monday, September 5, 2005 - 01:40 pm:

Maija, You are too funny. From Indiana, even Monroe County Michigan, is 'up north'.
When hubby and I first moved to Indiana, one of our new neighbors came over while we were unloading the moving van. "So," she asked us, "have you ever been this far up north? You need to be prepared for the snow we get." Hubby and I laughed so hard.
No joke, one of the travel brochures for here, reminds travelers that this is the 'north', and to be prepared for the 'cooler' weather we have here in the 'north' during the summer...and suggests to travelers, that they bring warmer clothing in the summer, to accomidate the 'cooler northern summer temperatures'. Where do they think Indiana is...next to Alaska?

By Danbury (Danbury) on Monday, September 5, 2005 - 04:40 pm:

Hi maija, no questioning that.
Just the same old: how much of a car (or truck) is really necessary?

By Danbury (Danbury) on Monday, September 5, 2005 - 04:45 pm:

That's nice - getting an American LaFrance for birthday! :D

By Marsha, Genesee/Aura (Marsha) on Monday, September 5, 2005 - 08:46 pm:

Aren't the flowers in Frankenmuth amazing now? We live not too far away in Genesee (NE of Flint). I go to the Bavarian Inn for my birthday and anniversary and Zehnder's for two different Christmas parties related to my work. Of course, it's beautiful at night during the Christmas season!

By Therese (Therese) on Monday, September 5, 2005 - 08:49 pm:

I took the dogs to the east side of Round Lake (just east of Petoskey State Park) at sunset and the mosquitoes are really biting! Speaking of sunset, I get a sense of the roundness of the earth when I look out the window and it is already fully dark out at 8:45 PM, then I log onto the Copper Harbor cam and see bright sunshine. A bit farther west and a lot farther north makes all the difference.

By WishingIWasInDaUP (Sur5er) on Monday, September 5, 2005 - 09:13 pm:

Marsha, The flowers in Frankenmuth definately are beautiful....and I could not get over how huge the hanging baskets on the street corners were.
