Good Monday Morning to all and my prayers go to the people on the Gulf Coast

If anyone is in the Lansing Michigan area over Labor Day weekend, the MSU Pavilion will be home to Llamafest on Sat & Sun. Last year this was the 2nd largest lama (llamas & alpacas) show in the US. Admission is free to this beautiful facility and there are many shows, informational activities, vendors and hundreds of wonderful animals from all over the country.

Good morning everyone :) I had a wonderful time at the lake yesterday. Bruce, I know you will love this one. We took Da Abbi (the doggie we had rescued a few years ago), with us. A woman who was at the beach, came over to visit with Da Abbi. We got to talking, and the woman is what she terms a 'foster parent for dogs flunky'. Her and her hubby temporarily take in dogs that have been rescued by the Humane Society...until permanent homes can be found for the dogs. So far, her and her hubby have ended up adopting all three of the 'foster' doggies sent their way.

She also told me how she also volunteers for dog transports from city to city...and state to state, for the Humane Society. Her latest failure at fostering...and latest addition to her family...was a chocolate lab that she had transported from Ohio. It is so great to know that there are wonderful people, like this woman, who are so dedicated to our four legged friends. :-)

From my uncle and aunt, Ted and Marge Donahue, in Miami Shores: "We were very fortunate in Katrina. Lots of wind gusts & rain squalls. The biggest nuisance was no electricity from Thurs Pm until Noon Monday. We have quite a few trees & big branches down. Otherwise, it was sort of like camping out, with the Coleman lantern & wide open windows. We discovered a restaurant called Schnitzel Haus. They have real German food, great beer selection & sprechen sie Deutsche."

We were in the UP recently and bought some Keweenaw Kitchen jams. They are really good. Does anyone know who may sell them by mail order?

Oh,the good ole Hiawatha Drive Inn!! Spent alot of Buck nites there. Eli Mattson used to take a load of us Dollar Bay kids in his huge truck. Sure was fun.That was in the 50's. Spent plenty of nights at the Lakes Drive Inn also.

Am looking for a David Sutinen who frequently checks this site. He used to live in Houghton, Michigan. Then he moved to Flint, and I lost track of him after he joined the Army. We were good friends/neighbors in Flint. I believe he now lives in Huntsville, Alabama.

I well remember "dollar a carload"....we sure loaded down the cars....Do you suppose our southern States will be offerd foreign aid after all the storm damage ?......don't hold your breath.

Most countries that receive foreign help do more or less desperately need it. Last I read about Katrina, the southern US was not really among them.

Have you been to that part of the country? I have and there are places where you wonder if you're still in this country. In a lot of those places, the population is so poor that they desperately needed help even before the devastation Katrina left behind. They won't have either medical or homeowner's insurance to help them rebuild. They definitely need all the help we or anyone else can give them.

What could any other country provide the US couldn't provide by itself?

That was my concern too in regards to where Katrina hit. These people were so poor, that they could not afford to evacuate, when Katrina was barreling down on them.
Danbury, Mississippi and Alabama have some of the worse poverty in the US...while the US pumps millions of dollars in aid to other countries who are better off then the residents of these states.
Mississippi and Alabama...the states where children go to bed hungry at night.

Considering the latest news, I might change my mind. German government acted accordingly.
