By WishingIWasInDaUP (Sur5er) on Saturday, August 27, 2005 - 08:59 am:

Good morning...or as Dave would say, 'wakie wakie'. I am headed to the farm market this morning for some corn. I went a little late yesterday and there were three women standing at the corn bins, ripping the ears open, to check the corn and then throwing the opened ears that were dry on the ends, back into bin. What a waste for the farmer, eh. I am tempted one of these times to lean over and remark the next time I see someone wasting corn like that, "honest...it's corn...you don't have to open it to check".

By WishingIWasInDaUP (Sur5er) on Saturday, August 27, 2005 - 09:00 am:

Congrats to Carrie and Jason. Here's to a wonderful wedding, and many years of happiness. Cheers.

By Charlotte, Mishawaka, IN (Charlotte61) on Saturday, August 27, 2005 - 11:09 am:

Good morning to all from Mishawaka, IN.

NKR--The Cavemen defense really looked good last night.I left at the half and missed the seeing the offense take over. That's life sometimes.

SurSer - Way back we had a farmer on the edge of Marquette who enjoyed raising good sweet corn because he enjoyed talking with his customers. One day one of those corn stripping types tried it on one of her ears after having paid for it, and he grabbed the bag back and returned the money and told her she need not return!

Lots of happy talk today. Is it all right to bring up something
ugly? In my local paper today I spotted an article on lamprey eel
numbers way up in western Lake Superior. Yuck! Any sign of
that amongst fishermen in the western U.P. What's going on?

Two questions, if I may: what're "lamprey" eel? And what'd be wrong with them?

By Mary Drew at Pasty Central (Mdrew) on Saturday, August 27, 2005 - 03:27 pm:

This should answer both your questions Danbury:
Environmental Education for Kids!. It's a page put out by the DNR and since it's there to educate our young people, it's also in language we can understand! :->

I must confess,"wakie wakie eggs & bakie," is a line i borrowed from my 4 yr.old nephew Cody.He would say that to us in the morning while camping in his southern cute little voice. Then i would hold him and squeeze him until i made him say " Food City, because of the way he pronouced that too.

By WishingIWasInDaUP (Sur5er) on Saturday, August 27, 2005 - 10:25 pm:

David, I love the 'wakie wakie' saying even more now....that is soooooo sweet.

Danbury, Lamprey eels are fresh water eels...some are small enough, that they attach themselves to fish, and eventually kill the fish. Someone correct me on this if I am wrong...but I believe that lamprey eels are a real threat, especially to the walleye and perch populations.

I remember back in high school, that someone had caught an eel out of the Huron River, and brought it into the science lab...it had to have been about ten feet long. Needless to say, I never went swimming in the Huron River after that.

By Suzy Lofquist (Suzymn41) on Sunday, August 28, 2005 - 12:03 am:

Evening all:

I have to say I have long been irritated with the people who rip open the corn at the grocery or Farmer's Markets (worse) to the point of confronting the rude behavior. What do they think happens to that product after it's been handled in that way? It's the kind of behavior that is passed down from one generation to the next, like voting a certain way just cuz Mom or Dad did it-time to do your own thinking! I might add we enjoyed the little Farmer's Market in Hancock a few weeks ago when we were up for our annual expedition to the beloved Keweenaw

By Danbury (Danbury) on Sunday, August 28, 2005 - 02:46 am:

Thank you, Mary, for that enlightening link which despite it's younger target group was quite informative (tm?).
Also to sur5er, to whom I'd recommend said link, too, since it appears to me that not all freshwater lamprey are parasitic, none are necessarily a problem, a condition that remains limited to the invading sea lamprey.
On the risk of being offensive: seems to me like there's a lot of money and labour spend on a phenomenon caused by ourselves (in this case, the seaway and Welland Canal) - again.
Not that I'd recommend closing the Seaway down, but wouldn't it be fair to ask all of those who profit from the enhancements to add to the funds necessary to deal with the resulting problems? Just thinking, no suggestions made.

By Danbury (Danbury) on Sunday, August 28, 2005 - 02:47 am:

Its, not it's, or is it?

By John (Johnmich) on Sunday, August 28, 2005 - 03:48 am:

It is it's. Isn't it?

By WishingIWasInDaUP (Sur5er) on Sunday, August 28, 2005 - 07:08 am:

Glad to hear that I am not the only one who thinks it is rude to rip open corn. Suzymn, my hubby said that same thing you did...it is something that is obviously passed down from one generation to the other.

Danbury, you are such a grin:)
It is it's when it is, 'it is'.

It isn't it's when it isn't it is.

P.S. I still think lamprey are gross.

By Danbury (Danbury) on Sunday, August 28, 2005 - 01:50 pm:

??? Ok, so, well, it's (!) either way, but since it wasn't it is, it should've been its (younger target group)?!?

Still wondering, but anyway, my grin to that.
:D (which I was told suggests a rather broad grin)
