Last night we had a visitor in Eagle River. Governor Jennifer Granholm was introduced by Commissioner Frank Stubenrach at the Keweenaw County Courthouse. Here it looks like she was about to try a kung-fu move on Frank:

High-YA
Instead of talking behind the podium, the Governor roamed around the room, talking about issues and asking questions. At one point she asked, "Do you have broadband Internet here?"... to which about two-thirds of the people in the room answered, "Yes!". Perhaps the Governor hasn't heard about Pasty.NET. We are in our third year of wireless service here in Eagle River, and it was actually a state grant for Keweenaw County which enabled us to expand coverage throughout the peninsula.
Working the crowd
Also, the Governor stated that no one outside of the Keweenaw ever hears about the Keweenaw. Maybe somebody should invite her to join thousand of regular Pasty Cam watchers for a daily glimpse of life in the U.P.

Good Morning from downstate! Feels like another hazy, lazy day of summer. Soon it'll all be a happy memory.

By WishingIWasInDaUP (Sur5er) on Thursday, August 18, 2005 - 07:53 am:

Good morning...time to rise and shine :)

Wow, I can't believe that the governor thought that no one outside of Keweenaw knows about it. That's strange, eh. Hmmmm....

By dlp (Babyseal) on Thursday, August 18, 2005 - 07:59 am:

Shh, it's a secret for the minority of us that know ;)

Something to be said about that statement. Maybe its the politicians do not hear about the Keweenaw. That could be a good thing!! Happy day to all - in and outside of the Keweenaw!

By maija (Maijami) on Thursday, August 18, 2005 - 08:58 am:

I like Governor Granholm because she stands up for Democratic values.

However, she is a 'politician.' It is her way to go to public meetings and ask questions. She has been known to show little or no knowledge of the area, or issues she is there to address.

By Ms. Katie (Mskatie) on Thursday, August 18, 2005 - 09:44 am:

I gather from the comments on this site, and the remarks of my fellow Winter Texans from Michigan, that the gov. is not well liked. Too bad. Being a public servent is a difficult and thankless job many times. If they aren't sleezy when they go into politics they become so after trying to follow our system. Don't vote for me :>

By lz (Llamamama) on Thursday, August 18, 2005 - 09:53 am:

I did not mean to personally dis on the Governor. I am pleased that folks pay attention to politics and develop opinions. I spent two years working in DC and I unfortunately developed some unhealthy cynicism. I try to keep a lid on it, but it boils over sometimes.

By JoAnne, Washington State (Davejostef) on Thursday, August 18, 2005 - 10:23 am:

I think it's an admirable trait for a politician to ASK QUESTIONS. It shows that they want to know about the area. No one person can know all about everything, everywhere. Good for her for showing interest and wanting to be better informed!

By WishingIWasInDaUP (Sur5er) on Thursday, August 18, 2005 - 10:24 am:

Llamamama,
I'm with you..after the politics I saw in law enforcement and victimology, I too am very cynical.

By Charles in Adrian (Charlesinadrian) on Thursday, August 18, 2005 - 10:25 am:

I wonder if Gov. Granholm is in the U.P. because this is Fair
Week at the U.P. State Fair in Esky? Whatever, it is nice to see
her in the U.P. Gov. Engler did not have much use for the U.P. as
I recall.

By JH (Thumbgardener) on Thursday, August 18, 2005 - 10:41 am:

I would imagine she is in the UP for the same reason she has been around other areas of Michigan lately. Election next year. Politicians are pretty transparent. Some are just better actors than others. She should have done her homework first.

By stix (Stixoutwest) on Thursday, August 18, 2005 - 11:47 am:

It's not just politicians that don't know the Keweenaw......unless you live in the UP, most think Upper Michigan is around Traverse City!!! Can we really expect them to know about the Keweenaw??!!!!! Maybe that's not such a bad thing! Maybe it's a message that the tourism council needs to do more advertising. Your call on that one....but I think it's kinda fun explaining to people that there's a remote hamlet of Michigan that no one knows about! How lucky we are that we do!!

Good Afternoon

By John Ostrom (Corky) on Thursday, August 18, 2005 - 01:44 pm:

Just got back home from 10 days in Houghton. This year, as in all years, it seems as though the radio stations and people roughly between Bay City and the bridge refer to that area as Upper Michigan. I asked a waitress in West Branch how they refer to the U.P, and she said they just call it the UP. So maybe they and Granholm think the UP was taken by Wisconsin years ago. (Which, by the way, sometimes made sense to me when I was growing up in Houghton). I remember some good arguments with an uncle on that subject.

By Marsha, Genesee/Aura (Marsha) on Thursday, August 18, 2005 - 02:12 pm:

Wasn't Granholm in the Keweenaw area last year, and don't I remember seeing pics of her kayaking on Portage Lake? Sure it was for publicity, but isn't it her job to get out when she can and showcase the state? It seems to me that most people like her OK. My granddaughter goes to school with Granholm's daughters and is friends with them. They sound like nice, likable kids.

By Yahoo in Flatland (Yahooinflatland) on Thursday, August 18, 2005 - 02:24 pm:

At least this Govenor seems to recognize the UP exists.
As I remember, Gov Engler didn't even bother to come to the UP during his election campaigns, or if he did, he would just fly into Marquette, make a 1/2 day appearence & then high-tail it below the bridge.
At least this Gov shows an interest, even if she hasn't done her home work.

Did she at least discuss or inquire how the schools are doing with funding & declining enrollments in the smaller towns of the UP?

By maija (Maijami) on Thursday, August 18, 2005 - 04:42 pm:

JoAnn: Don't get me wrong. I like Gov. Granholm. I understand your comment about politicians should ask ???

The thing about her, (as an educator I say this) is she came to public mtgs and many were very interested in hearing her views and getting an idea of what her policies would be. After Engler we would be happy with *******

It's just that she would not do that. Some there asked her directly, and she would just deflect the question.

Maybe good, I don't know. I cannot fault her for anything she has done so far to try to patch this state back together after Mr. E.

By Vincent Vega (Theoneandonlykâ) on Thursday, August 18, 2005 - 05:14 pm:

I remember King John saying in the election year that he would "drive his Oldsmobile" to the UP...

Whatta joke that was...

By WishingIWasInDaUP (Sur5er) on Thursday, August 18, 2005 - 07:22 pm:

Maija,
You have a point there. Anyone is better than Governor E. ;)

By Lizbeth Benson (Lizidaho) on Thursday, August 18, 2005 - 08:16 pm:

Please correct me if wrong. Didn't Pasty cam have a picture of Govenor E at the Calumet theater and or a presentation of Pasty T-shirt some time back? I don't know if he was campaigning or just visiting. Maybe I have the wrong governor. I don't vote in MI so the political scene is an unknown to me. Or, maybe Chopper Charlie was there and made the presentation????

Charlie & Gov. Engler

May 2, 1998 - Governor John Engler is presented with his very own "I Love Pasties" T-shirt today in the Calumet Theater. (given by webmaster Charlie Hopper)

Charles in Adrian (Charlesinadrian) on Thursday, August 18, 2005 - 09:40 pm:

I was right. The Gov. will be at the U.P. State Fair tomorrow. So
will the fair Sen. Stabenow, and I guess Dick DeVos and a Detroit
minister named Butler will be around too. (I think the minister
wants to run against Debbie Stabenow.) As for how well the
Gov. is perceived, the most recent poll showed her well ahead of
DeVos except in the Traverse City/eastern U.P. region.
