A myriad of folks pass by the Canyon Falls if they're traveling US-41 north to the Keweenaw. It would be an interesting study to see how many have taken the time to stop there and hike in to get a good look at the them. If you haven't, you might be as surprised as David Soumis was when he encountered the height of the walls on several sections of the canyon surrounding the falls. Guess that could be where the name for this picturesque spot gets it's origin. To find what is commonly referred to as the Grand Canyon of the U.P., just watch for the roadside park between L'Anse (about 7 miles south) and the Covington Junction. It's well worth the scenic hike along the Sturgeon River to glimpse such splendor!

Beautiful way to start another week! Thanks!
Good morning all!

Beeeautiful. Wish I was there right now.

Beautiful indeed - but especially the second pic reminds me of Ausable Chasm, NY. When I was there for the first time, I shot a whole 36-Pic roll like it was nothing. Second time around, I told myself not to put a roll into the camera. Of course, I failed and shot another one.

Hello!
Magnificent pictures again today!!!

Spectacular picture of the cliff walls! We have been there several times, but have never seen this view before - very, very nice!!!

Absolutely gorgeous place. Next time we're up there I'll have to check it out.

Im not sure if you can do it anymore, but one used to be able to walk beyond the falls a couple miles and see even more great views of the gorge. A number of years ago, some friends and I took kayaks down the river from the falls and it was simply awesome. Some decent fishing below the falls as well....

This is an awesome kayak run in the spring, and for parts of the summer and fall. Once I'm completely confident in the stability of my shoulder (next April) I can't wait to be running laps through the canyon. Also the view from a boat is phenominal. "No Name Falls" and the surrounding rapids are probably the most fun rapids I've ever run (which is the next major water fall downstream of the one pictured here)

Last spring when kayaking off the far right side of the falls, the second step would bounce you towards that fallen tree. Though there was no way possible to actually hit it, it still made you want to duck as you went flying underneath it!

OK, I'm going to try posting here again for about the fourth time today! I usually have no problem and was able to post on the What's Up page with no problem!

This is a beautiful hike along a flat boardwalk. When you get to the end you can go even farther after climbing a rock wall about five feet or so high. Especially nice in the fall! I've always wanted to take a picnic lunch on the hike and sit on one of the flat rock slabs and enjoy the day.

Thanks for showing my pics :)
There are a great many surprises in the UP. I grew up in Chassell, and never had seen this area before, nor any of the waterfalls for that matter, other than Douglas Houghton falls near Lake Linden, which is now grown over.

Why was that area left to grow over ????

We always make a point of stopping here on our way to the Keeweenaw. The falls are beautiful and well worth the hike back to see them. A great picture today to remind me of past trips to that very spot.

By Lulubelle/Hancock (Lulubelle) on Monday, August 29, 2005 - 09:14 pm:

Douglas Houghton falls are on private property and the owner doesn't want people on it any more. Too many people were being careless and climbing where they shouldn't.

Really enjoy the Sturgeon River Falls and have even brought company from Finland to see them.

Hey Dave, those are some nice perspectives on the canyon there at Canyon Falls! It is definitely a great place to go exploring and swimming. Speaking of Houghton Falls, that was always a favorite falls of mine. I understand that it isn't open to the public any more, but here is a shot that I took the last time I got back in there in 1996. https://pasty.com/pcam/albuq33/scan_052

Houghton Falls

thanks for the image of Houghton Falls .
We used to go in the cave down on the bottom ... many many years ago.
Even then, the area was getting trashed ... beer bottles and stuff.

By Jack K (Jackinct) on Tuesday, August 30, 2005 - 01:56 pm:

I was just up there a week ago today and took almost the exact same picture.
We hiked downstream a little bit past the end of the trail and really enjoyed the canyon and the river. There were a few people we met on their way back up the trail that appeared to have taken a dip in the river.

Can't believe it, not one mention of the cliff jumping at Canyon Falls...I can remember as a Tech student driving down so we could jump off the cliffs into the water then climb back up the old rope. If I remember correctly it was about a thirty foot drop. And yes, DH Falls are closed to the public. Too much trash, too many people making their own trails, and all the rock climbing and rapelling led to a large increase in the erosion. I know it was the first large cliff I repelled down (with Army ROTC in '89). Just remember when you visit the other area attractions...if you don't behave yourselves, they'll be closed off to us all as well.
