Thought it would be interesting to see the pictures.

In reguard to sur5er's survival story yesterday...I just don't understand how this deputy keeps his job..his job (I thought) was to protect us from creeps like himself! There is a saying, "laws are to protect the criminals". I wish you all my best sur5er! :)

In regard to cell phones not working in Eagle Harbor, etc: I hate to be considered a "yuppie"!

I have a cell phone, but NEVER use it in public, and HORRORS! while driving.

I understood Mooney's comments and agree that it is lovely to be free of contacts. But many places people stay do not have land lines. Both my children had things going on. I almost didn't take the trip, but gave them my cell number. (Turned on only for a situation like this!) Also gave them the other cell numbers. But all was dead in Eagle Harbor. Made me nervous to not be in contact.

All turned out well, but still I wonder why there is no cell access since there was in previous years.

Someone said a company bought out the towers. So now there is no access for people w phones from other companies? Can't they charge a fee and allow use?

Some of you don't like tourism, but others understand its importance. This will hurt!

I guess I'm upset by this issue.

I'll add that we were up there for one short week and had lots of business to conduct. We were very lucky to drive to pay phones and contact people and set up meetings. A return call would have been impossible.

I'm wondering if this is not affecting local people as well, contractors, etc. who are working out in the field and rely on cells.

I would truly like to know the whole story on the company that bought the towers. (if that is the case.)

Mornin', I agree. I know about pristine wilderness and all, but somethings should be explained.

We have parts of TX where you cannot use a cell. If you get in the mountains there is also a problem.

Did anyone else get stranded on the wrong side of the Portage when the bridge got stuck yesterday?

Well, I am being a regular Chatty Cathy today with yet another
comment. I was just looking at various news items on Yahoo,
and there was a great article on how dynamic Finland has
become. (Cell phone production leads the way, by the way, with
Nokia being so big.) What's their secret? A great educational
system, trust in their government, and a huge investment in R &
D. Take a look at that article; very interesting. I wonder if the
Finnish gentleman who sends messages to this site all the time
could comment on this. Meanwhile, hoorah for having Mich.
Tech. in the Keweenaw. The future of the area is linked to that
school along with very cool local entrepreneurs like one we
know who can make something special out of pasties, pictures
and a nursing home.

JMT, This happened in a certain section of Michigan that is known for not being on the up and up...and I most certainly do not judge the rest of Michigan by this county. Did I mention that this sheriff has been re-elected twice since this deputy did this? The incident was referred to as 'dirty laundry' that the department 'did not want to air'. So you have to blame the community also, for not demanding accountability.

Maija, I understand your frustration with the cell phones...and needing them for business purposes. But I have always lived in a tourist area and on one of the Great Lakes...and nothing is more frustrating to me, than attempting to enjoy some peace and quite in a park, the woods, or on the lake...only to hear someone's phone conversation.
Unfortunately, not everyone exhibits good cell phone manners as you do. Sigh. It was so much easier when people had two way radios and cb's.

When you're in Keweenaw County, it's nice to be able to go up on Brockway Mountain to check your cell phone messages. What if you had a family emergency back home and folks couldn't reach you to leave a voice mail? I never use my phone when I'm driving. In fact, it's rarely used except in situations like this when I'm out of my home area.

I'm willing to bet its Macomb county. If this is correct, the sheriff's father is in prison and he too was a former sheriff. If you ask me, the old saying the apple doesn't fall far from the tree applies.

You don't have to varify this sur5er. Just my observation.

Trollette, Nope...it was Monroe County. And you are right about the apple not falling far from the tree. The Monroe County deputy's sister had killed her hubby a few years prior. Amazing about the sheriff from Macomb county...but not surprising.

ser5er: It is a terrible thing to have one's life threatened, and being held hostage by the perpatrator or by public opinion. It was up to us to rise above it and learn from it and to rebuild our lives, though the trauma is always still back in our mind. As to the deputy stalking you and wishing you harm, I am a great believer of "What goes around, comes around". I hope someday you will find the peace and joy of retiring to the Upper Peninsula. Bthecute1, How true ;) Each day when I work with crime victims...and fight for legislative reform for victims, I am getting one over on the deputy. And my ultimate triumph will be when I fulfill my dream of moving to da UP ;)
Besides, you and I have already risen above them...we survived :)

The cell phones work well in Finland because they are satellite phones. My husband's cousin talked to all his bank customers while we traveled in Sweden and Norway. They have plenty of mnts in Norway. We need a few satellite phones here but need to get a company to supply the service for a reasonable price.

We believe we saw the Sullivan on the evening of July 5th at the Soo Locks, MI. We were on our way home from a two week holiday at McLean State Park. The boat was so interesting that we took a couple of pictures of it.

Can anyone tell me what people did before the cell phone was invented? Some people act like this is their only means of communication. There are pay phones in Eagle Harbor and Copper Harbor. To the tourists: Think back to when you visited the Keweenaw before cell phones. What did you do then? Do the same thing now. Ahhhhh

Regarding your friend and my father Bill Penprase:

Bill suffered a stroke Monday, July 11th and is hospitalized. Surgeons performed brain surgery to remove bleeding from the front right portion of his brain. The surgeon, Dr. Yadegar, is pleasently surprised with his progress. Bill has regained the use of both arms and legs and continues to take notes of his progress and going's-on at the hospital. Three hours after surgery he wrote: HOSPITAL THIS SIZE NEEDS BETTER KLEENEX. Always the comedian. He has also requested his flashlight and continues to "light up" staff members. As of the writing of this, he still has the flashlight.

Our family requests your prayers for God's Will in this time of healing. He will be in ICU for the next 3 - 5 days and then begin the rehabilitation process. Please let his friends at Gitchie Gumie know so they may pray as well.

Gen X don't know what it was like befor cell phones,as we baby boomers don't know what it's like without a microwave.

In '68 when my Dad was diagnosed, we barely had Cytoxin (which he didn't get) and radiation. He didn't make it. He saw my brother graduate from high school and me from nursing school--then he was gone. I got news yesterday that mine is curable and 7 out of 10 get no recurrance. I am very, very lucky. Will start both Chemo and Radiation within the next ten days and only have to drive 3 miles to do it. Thank you Don and Sybil Harrington (Cancer Center benefactors).

Jonathan, please let your dad know that my husband and I will be praying for your dad. Tell him Betty (Paull) Colborn in AZ said hi and we know he is in the Lords hands. (Your grandfather used to work in the mines with my dad - and Bill will know who I am.) Thanks Jonathan

hey margaret....

I went through chemo a year ago myself. (breast cancer) Don't worry too much because alot of people don't get sick like they used to. I work full time and didn't miss any work at all. Let us know how you are doing.... you have alot of support out here.
