Good morning...time to rise and shine...at least that is what my dogs claimed at 5:30 this morning. Option one: work until noon...and then treat self to the rest of the day off to enjoy the beautiful day. Option two: why wait until noon?

curious sissy, the blue and white chairs are painted for the Grand Finn Fest in Marquette in August. I believe the chairs are so everyone can have a seat while viewing the activities during the fest. Can anyone give more info?

A question was raised the other day as to who won the Pasty Cook-Off, but I can't find the answer. Does anybody know?

As a judge for the commercial catagory, I can relate the three winners for that portion:

On NPR this morning,an author, Ander Monson, was brought up. New book of poems re: U.P. called
Vacationland. Has anybody read other stuff (short
stories) by Monson?

Thanks Mary for the info. I had a nice weekend in the Copper Country and had a first-timer with me. He just couldn't get over all those people standing in line for a pasty! But after our picnic lunch on the shore, he understands.

Joanne mi. I am not sure if I can help you or not, But my Mom who passed away last July had a best friend Ann Weijola who is at the Houghton County Care Facility ( I think that is the name)... Maybe she can help. Mom used to call her. I am not sure if she is ill or just old..

The blue and white chairs are for Finn Grand Fest in Mqt. Mary Wright ( I believe, Mqt artist) is painting chairs and compiling pictures from across the UP, photographing the famous blue and white chairs for the fest in all counties of the UP. She is trying to take these photos at the most well recognized spot in each county.

P.S. The chairs at the hoist are symbolic of the skip or man cars where the miners rode on to decend into the mine.

I see London won the Olympics for 2012. This was after Pres.
Chirac of France slammed English cooking as the worst in the
world except for Finnish cooking. I must admit that while I have
read a lot and tasted a lot of Danish, Swedish and Norwegian
food, I have never heard much about Finnish cooking. Is it that
bad, or do you think that poor Chirac got into some lutefisk (a
Norwegian atrocity, I believe) and was told it was a Finnish dish?

Charles, Adrian: No the Prez of France got it right. I am half Finn, and there is no question they have the worst food in the world. How many times have you seen a resteraunt advredtise authenic Finnish cuisiene? As appossed to Italian, French. Chinese, American, Mexican etc., etc. We had a saying in the Western end of the U.P. "the Italians live to eat, and the Finns eat to live"

joesyooper: I am not Finn by any means but they have many dishs that I like. And it goes without saying that the same thing could be said about the others that you mentioned. They have a lot of different dishes that unless you are a native of the different countries you might not or wouldn't like.
Maybe it was the food that has made the Finns so tough??

Joesyooper...ahhhhhh c'mon, Finnish food isn't all that bad...is it? Perhaps it depends on who is doing the cooking? Ok, so I agree, there is nothing that can be done with Lutefish.

Lutefish is Norwegian. Name some Finnish dishes, other than pancakes, that are a good dish. Ones that you would go to a resteruant and pay good money to eat. I am waiting to hear.

Joesyopper, I'll add to lmr's list: Finska glasstipita; pikkeleipienperustaikina; hernekeitto; kropsuec; sipulipiirakka; lihamurekepiiras. See, there is more to Finnish food than pannuskakku.
Finnish meals are a lot like Amish food...very simple...but people come in flocks to Indiana to enjoy Amish cooking.

Nice to see the picture of the engine that my son took when we came for the DB All School Reunion in 02. We saw it as it went thru Calumet(with whisle blowing)on the back of a truck and then in LL as they laid the tracks and then unloaded the engine and backed it onto the tracks. This picture is just before they rolled it into the shed. It took several hours of hard work to accomplish all of this on a very hot,humid day.It was a very interesting afternoon.

I think the man-skip seated the miners 3 wide, that's why they hung 'em 3 wide at #2.

Joanne,Mi I worked with your Aunt Ann Weijola at the Old CO.Hosp back in the late 50's and 60's. She was a very nice lady. Incidentally the lady who made the baked goods was Finnish and she made the BEST Rieska and Nisu(a)!!We all loved it!!

I have found out that there was 2 ann weijola's.
do you happen to know if the ann your speaking of was married to duke?

Joanne; The Ann Weijola that is in the Houghton
County Medical Center was married to Duke's father,Gunnard Weijola Sr. from Florida location
in Laurium. Ann Menneguzzo is not the same person.
Duke had some half sisters and brothers. John,
Joanne, Carl, Bill, Inez. The later three are now
deceased. Ann is still at Houghton County Medical
Center. Hope this helps.

Just want to share my evening with you folks, my yooper friends. We attended an outdoor band concert tonight that made our belated July 4th wonderful! The evening of patriotic music is always emded with the 1812 Overature(sp?) with several cannons! My 7 year old grandson loved the noise, smoke and the cymbals with zest!!!There was a musical salute to each of the armed services as the senior men in the audiance stood. All ended with a rousing "National Anthem" (Sighhhh) God bless America.
