Out of the fog you suddenly catch a glimpse of a flashing light and you know you've spotted the Keweenaw Waterway Entrance Light near McLain Park. You breathe a sigh of relief, as you now will be able to find your way back through the canal. Both of these shots, captured by Frank and Tina Anderson give you a good idea of being out on Lake Superior in the fog, when you can't see much out in front of the bow of the boat. The second shot is the breakwall leading out to the light, with a hazy, mystic feeling about what you may encounter if you venture into the fog, out to the end!

Great picture to start off the day. Thanks!

I think I will wait for the fog to clear before I make a comment on these pictures.

Love the pic of the lighthouse shrouded in fog. Mary you are right...fog definately makes everything look mystical.

Would you really call this a light house or is it more correct to call this a marker? Does anybody know if there is a fog signal on this navigational aid?

The first picture shows how I feel some mornings when I first wake up!

By Thea Wagner (Tkelwag) on Tuesday, July 26, 2005 - 11:45 am:

This reminds me of the fog horn they used to have in Eagle Harbor. I can remember standing in front of it getting a picture taken when it went off -- really woke us up! My summer vacation wasn't complete without hearing the fog horn.

Love the pics. I could use a cool dip now in the Lake. Temps too high here in PA.

By Kraig Funkey (Captkraig) on Tuesday, July 26, 2005 - 12:23 pm:

Hello,

Yes this light has a fog signal on it but it is small compared to the original signal. Also anyone looking to see lots of lighthouses of the Keweenaw should check out the Keweenaw Star. We have another lighthouse tour this weekend that goes around the Keweenaw and out to Stannard Rock.

By Stuart Crewdson (Stuyooper) on Tuesday, July 26, 2005 - 01:31 pm:

I've swam there many time but never when it was that foggy. I bet if you're a captain on freighter in that fog you feel alot better seeing the lighthouse.

By Kay, Wisconsin (Kayb) on Tuesday, July 26, 2005 - 04:43 pm:

Captkraig,

Please tell - what is the Keweenaw Star?

Kay, Wisconsin: You can find out more about the Keweenaw Star right here at Pasty.com, since they're one of our sponsors. Just click on this link: Keweenaw Excursions.

Thanks for the link. I wish I'd know sooner.

By Anna Roehrich (Updreamer) on Tuesday, July 26, 2005 - 05:06 pm:

We saw this light about 2 weeks ago. We stopped by to visit my aunt & uncle who were serving as campground hosts at McLain, and my father-in-law simply cannot pass up a lighthouse without stopping!

Is it blueberry picking time yet?

By Tom Murto (Tominindiana) on Tuesday, July 26, 2005 - 05:26 pm:

In the fifties and sixties the fog horn had a huge two tone sound, which was low and lower. From a couple miles away, at night it sounded spooky. Grandpa called it sorrowful.

By Helen (Lahelo) on Tuesday, July 26, 2005 - 05:59 pm:

There really aren't any blueberries around to be had. It has been too dry this summer. I haven't seen hardly any at all.

By Grace M Wetton (Gmw) on Tuesday, July 26, 2005 - 06:30 pm:

Great photos but the top one of the lighthouse looks kind of eerie sitting there in the fog.

By Robin Briggs (Robin) on Tuesday, July 26, 2005 - 07:20 pm:

I really enjoy the fog pictures. It leaves an element of mystery. Scooby Doo where are you?

By Wade Pietila (Wade) on Wednesday, July 27, 2005 - 12:56 am:

This reminds me off 2 weeks ago. I was here with some friends and we were jumping off it. It doesn't look to high from the breakwall but once you get on the second level its pretty crazy. We were on there for about 45 minutes, jumped off maybe 8 times when the sheriff showed up in a boat. We saw the boat coming in and though it was just a normal boat. then when he got closer we all jumped off at once. He was going full throttle coming in. He warned us that it was a Federal Offense to be on a light house. Do i wish i had a camcorder. You should have seen what it looked like to see about 65 people jumping off that light house at once. It was like the Movie Titantic where they all jump off.
WARNING! DO NOT CLIMB ON ANY LIGHT HOUSE. IT IS NOT ONLY A FEDERAL OFFENSE BUT IT IS ALSO VERY DANGEROUS!
