Watching the kids play yesterday, first at the Popeye Run in Eagle Harbor, then at Pasty Fest in Calumet, I thought of this picture. Kids at this age are a lot of fun... old enough to be adventurous - but not driving yet, not too independent. This particular shot is my mother-in-law (left) and her mom and sister. (At least I think it's her sister behind the shades.) Looks like they were on a visit to the U.P. from downstate, as are thousands of folks this weekend. The shot was taken probably in the early 40's by my wife's grandpa, Frank Covert, who loved to photograph Northern Michigan.

By the way, the mother in this shot is the daughter of the young man in our Shoebox Memory a couple of weeks ago, the one on the mysteriously balancing bike:

Great Grampa Ketley

Hope you're having a good time with family and friends over this holiday interlude, making a few memories of your own. Have a wonderful week :o)

That dog looks like she's spotted something, or maybe just thirsty

Thanks for the slide show of Pasty Day in Calumet. I made my own Pasties and they were delicious. We would have rather been there, but since we couldn't, I brought the flavors here.

Waiting for Monday to see the rest of the story.

Cool shots from yesterday. Wish we could have been with you.

By Ms. Katie on Sunday, July 3, 2005 - 01:38 pm:

A big thanks for Daryl sharing the pictures of yesterday's activities. Still hope to make it there some day. I especially enjoyed the fellow Red Hatters. We have wild "mature" gals everywhere don't we? Having a quiet 4th ourselves. Maybe I can drag hubby to a local fireworks tomorrow. Safe holiday everybody.

Whose jet aircraft is that on the ground in the airpot cam?

By David S. - FL on Sunday, July 3, 2005 - 04:11 pm:

I was wondering about that private looking jet at CMX, too. I know the professors at Tech are paid fairly well, but, WOW.

By party goer on Sunday, July 3, 2005 - 07:32 pm:

It could be someone other than Tech officials who have the Lear Jet. Oh well. more important things to worry about than that!!! Sorry, I've had too many rum & cokes.

By FLEW my MOONEY today no jet...lol on Sunday, July 3, 2005 - 07:45 pm:

Well, we had to say hi today, because Cindy, Josh and I are at Fran's house! So Happy 4th from ALL of us!

By Scott and Meri Sackson, Mesa AZ. on Monday, July 4, 2005 - 07:16 pm:

I sure wish we could have been there, it was 112 here today. Just returned from the beach in Rocky Point Mexico so it wasn't the end of the world. My whole family is celebrating the 4th in Calumet. Next year I will have to look for tickets to the U.P. a little sooner! Have a great 4th!

Sorry, but something just doesn't look right to me, the children's heads appear too large for their bodies. Could this be a result of "photo-shopping?" In the old days, we didn't have photo shop, but there were cardboard figures with holes to place your head. But this is too good for that.
