Greetings to Pasty lovers everywhere, on their way to Pasty Fest in Calumet today. Wish I could be there, but I'm standing up in a wedding this afternoon here in the sunrise side of the U.P., otherwise I would be enjoying one of those free pasties for the first 400. (Maybe next year).

Our own Daryl Laitila was out here recently, to visit with their son. He works for the Drummond Island Resort, which is only accessible by ferry transport across the St. Mary's River, over to Drummond Island on the eastern end of the Upper Peninsula. Her first shot is a display of some sort, but I can't quite make out the signage. That smaller green sign to the left says "A Drummond Island Moment", which leads me to believe it must be something to do with the history of the Island. Seems like a nice spot to sit and swing while contemplating the saga related there. The second shot is part of the shoreline, showing quite a difference in the Lake Superior rock and the Lake Huron stone. If I'm not mistaken, I think there is an abundance of limestone in the Detour/Drummond Island area. For anyone who hasn't had the pleasure of visiting this area before (and even those of you who have), why not take a little slideshow tour, courtesy of Daryl.

Have a safe and happy Independence Day weekend!

Daryl, Thanks so much for taking the time to take pics of the Pasty Fest activities...and then to take time to post them here as a slideshow for us. This is the first Fourth of July in years, that I have not been home to the UP...so your pics meant so very much to me. Thanks :)

Thank You, Daryl for the wonderful pictures you just sent on this website. Was not able to attend
the festivities but your pictures were the closest thing to being there. Hope everyone had a great time!

By Sue, Calumet on Saturday, July 2, 2005 - 07:51 pm:

There's a Lake "Huron"??

Editor's note: Yes, Sue, there is. The five Great Lakes are: Lake Superior, Lake Michigan, Lake Huron, Lake Ontario and Lake Erie, with Superior, Michigan and Huron all bordering the U.P. You can find out more about them all at:

I believe in Daryl's album there is a segment in the Heikenpäivä 2005 of the wife carrying contest. Today the Estonians snatched the world wife carrying contest again. I think it is a 253.5 meter long obstacle course, whereby a man has to carry a wife upside down on his back who weighs no more than 49kg. The only purpose of this is 'to have fun'. I bet that would have been fun to watch. Only the Finns........

Dear Daryl,

Thanks for the slide show. Though I was
expecting to get to the UP this week-end, I
never did. My father was very sick and was in
the hospital in Troll Land all week-end. Here's
hoping he and I will make it in time for the
blueberries and Finn Fest in August.
