Bless you sblazek for asking. Waiting tables for many years (and many years ago) I heard all sorts ask how far to Bear-aaga or Bear-oo-ga (Baraga) and Esk-cana-abwa (Escanaba). Even now it is only seconds for me to contact local downstate TV and radio stations to correct their Yooper city mispronunciations.

L'Anse sounds like "Lonce" (silent e) when you say it right.
L' means "the", Anse is "bay".

I returned home after 16 months of active duty with the U.S. Army. The situation in Iraq seen close up and from a perspective of a GI is much different from what the American public gets from the media.

Pasty Fest 2005 is Saturday, July 2 in Calumet. Parade starts at 10:00am, and we start serving pasties at noon. There will also be a bake-off competition with pasties from all over the U.P.
