I just looked at the airport cam and for a second I thought it was a body of water surrounded by trees. Sure is raining.

A couple of days ago Charlie mentioned the Strawberry Festival in Chassell. Are there "U-Pick" Farms nearby? Thanks in advance for the information.

By sur5er on Tuesday, June 14, 2005 - 09:11 am:

U-Pick Farms in Michigan. Ok, let's see if Survivor gets this right, Charlie. ;)

Hi All,
I know this is dumb but could someone tell me how you
pronounce L'Anse?
Thank you

By Margaret, Amarillo TX on Tuesday, June 14, 2005 - 01:09 pm:

lan(like in ants) s(s is just added on end) Make the whole sound out of your nose; ya know, just like west Texans do--Willie Nelson.

By sblazek,Oconomowoc on Tuesday, June 14, 2005 - 01:16 pm:

Thanks Margaret, maybe I won't sound so totally
ignorant when I'm up there in July.

By sorry margaret on Tuesday, June 14, 2005 - 01:20 pm:

It's lawn s.

By dr. pronuntiare, west coast of MI on Tuesday, June 14, 2005 - 01:42 pm:

Bless you sblazek for asking. Waiting tables for many years (and many years ago) I heard all sorts ask how far to Bear-aaga or Bear-oo-ga (Baraga) and Esk-cana-abwa (Escanaba). Even now it is only seconds for me to contact local downstate TV and radio stations to correct their Yooper city mispronunciations.

God Bless all our Vets and military civilians today!

By maijaMI on Tuesday, June 14, 2005 - 01:58 pm:

On Northern Experience the host pronounced Bete Gris 'bet grease.' You'd think a local would have told him!

By ~ on Tuesday, June 14, 2005 - 02:02 pm:

L'Anse sounds like "Lonce" (silent e) when you say it right.
L' means "the", Anse is "bay".

By Charlie at Pasty Central on Tuesday, June 14, 2005 - 03:53 pm:

Lahnse

rhymes with first syllable of monster

mahnse

Charles: 15 to 20 million Sunni's not very happy that we are in Iraq? There are one billion Muslem's world wide that are very, very, very upset the U.S. is in their Holy Land. The Crusades happened 1400 years ago, and they haven't got over that.

By Margaret, Amarillo TX on Tuesday, June 14, 2005 - 05:27 pm:

Thanks Charlie, I knew I was right. Two years of French in Michigan school don't make you ignorant sounding even if you do move to Texas--and believe me, some folks passin' through here haven't a clue on Amarillo nor Borger (like Burger but with an o). Just keep on goin' to Phoenix.

By Sgt. R. W. Landweiss, Green Bay, Wisc. on Tuesday, June 14, 2005 - 05:37 pm:

I returned home after 16 months of active duty with the U.S. Army. The situation in Iraq seen close up and from a perspective of a GI is much different from what the American public gets from the media.

By Bthecute1, San Jose on Tuesday, June 14, 2005 - 05:57 pm:

sblazek, Oconomowoc: I say, pronounce it anyway you want, if it feels right to you. The last time I tried explaining how to pronounce SISU, I sort of got chewed up and spit out. By the way, no offense taken. :)

By erica florida keys on Tuesday, June 14, 2005 - 06:24 pm:

Sgt.R.W.Landweiss--got your message loud and clear. I wish all of our service people could return safely. The sooner ,the better.I hope you are home for good.

By Grimace on Tuesday, June 14, 2005 - 07:49 pm:

To Sgt. R.W. Landweiss
Thank you for the insight, obviously "what's up "
is not the place to voice your political opinions . Keep it nice and simple, you should not want to arouse any Pastie eating yoopers . The hood slowly lowers over the face of liberty.

By pasty cam reader on Tuesday, June 14, 2005 - 08:13 pm:

Don't insult us Pasty eating yoopers!!!
Just be nice, thank you!!!

By erica florida keys on Tuesday, June 14, 2005 - 09:03 pm:

I am sure pasty readers were not insulted by Sgt.R.W.Landweiss's remarks. I think we need more information from those with first hand experience.

By moty, calumet on Tuesday, June 14, 2005 - 10:45 pm:

Sgt. Landweiss, Hats off to you! Thank you for your service. We NEED to hear first hand from people like you, and be reminded that we are hearing twisted media!

By danbury on Wednesday, June 15, 2005 - 02:06 am:

Seems to me like Grimace read something that's not here anymore - all's nice so far.
Sgt. Landweiss, your post left me wondering wether you could suggest a place on the net where one could get more about your, or a similar, perspective of the situation in Iraq?

By sg/Milford on Wednesday, June 15, 2005 - 05:55 am:

It must be nice to know everything about everything!

I wondered when the Pasty Fest takes place. Please advise.

By Charlie at Pasty Central on Wednesday, June 15, 2005 - 06:58 am:

Pasty Fest 2005 is Saturday, July 2 in Calumet. Parade starts at 10:00am, and we start serving pasties at noon. There will also be a bake-off competition with pasties from all over the U.P.
