A handful of mini marshmallows along with the crushed pineapple in cole slaw makes a tasty salad. Sure beats the crab or mock-crab used in a few of the places I have been.
Sent my Mother's (Chassell native)recipe for pineapple cream pie to Pillsbury about 50 years ago, they rejected it.
Half a 15 or 16 ounce can of well drained crushed pineapple in place of sliced bananas in a vanilla pudding. I use corn starch pudding from the side of the box.

I miss aspects of the U.P. and seeing the beauty of nature back UP NORTH makes me miss it even more.
Sadly jobs and carreer options are short up that way there are good jobs but not many of them to go around ,and with a college education city life gives many more options to so many who are looking not only for a good job but a good quality of life,seems many in the UP got sucked into the life of sitting in a watering hole everynight on the same bar stool as the night before .
I love where I live the city/town is great , there is alot to do, jobs are plentiful, and going back UP NORTH is a roadtrip away, or plane ride, so I dont feel leaving the area for me was a bad thing, I think it was a good thing, and I know that going back is just a roadtrip or plane ride away, to enjoy the shores of the Great Lakes once again.

whoa!! One finds what one is looking for. You will find an incredible people in the Copper Country when you look for them. The people are anywhere and everywhere - genuine, interesting, funny, hard-working, honest, and full of integrity. After more than a decade of life in my beloved Copper Country, the people are number one reason I love this place.

Right on 'dm hace'. I wonder why Angela got up on her 'educated' soap box? IF one does not like the small town way of living you simply move on to something more glamorous, college or not, but do not ever knock the way other people 'chose' to live.

I have to add my two bits. When the mine in White Pine closed & my hubby lost his job, we considered moving from the UP. But gave up the thought of a good paying job elsewhere to allow our sons to be brought up here in God's Country. My sons may choose to live elsewhere later in life. But as I sat on my backporch last night, watching the hummingbirds, listening to the birds at the other feeder, seeing the pics on todays pasty cam, we made the right decision. Life is good. Wish I had a digital camera to take pics of the birds at my feeders and send in for others to enjoy. Thanks for sharing.

I was thinking the same thing Carol. I think that was a just a slap in the face to the people that live in the Keweenaw.

Wouldn't a Yooper Recipe category on this site be a wonderful resource? I need a foolproof Nisu recipe. I can make an awesome walnut or aple povatica but Nisu eludes me.
Maybe a recipe book fundraiser for the site??

Angela's just telling it like it is for many, not all. Her message isn't just to blast the UP, but telling the reason why she left the area. The UP's biggest export is their children!
The Keweenaw is alot of things, what Angela describes is one of them.

Hey everyone, I think if you read between the lines, we all know what Angela is talking about. Opportunity is limited up there and yes, many jobs and relationships have been lost on a bar stool or two but that's not unlike many places. Once a person graduates from Tech or Finlandia, there aren't enough jobs to keep people there. But.....so many keep coming back to visit and to eventually retire. I am a Yooper, I graduated from Tech, I went back recently and lived 5 fun years (well, sort of fun!!) there with my family but there came a point where we had to move on and it was a good move for us. We still have a cottage up there and always will. Still enjoy our time in the summers or whenever we can sneak back. Maybe the lack of opportunities etc. is what has kept the Copper Country what it is. There's a whole world out there and one can find good in all corners. But just think how fortunate we all are to have experienced the UP, even if it is only through the pasty cam and their great daily pics!!!

Perhaps Angela has experienced some personal hurt from watching someone close to her waste their life on a barstool. She may not really be lashing out at all Copper Country residents, but only those who make that choice, sadly affecting not only their own lives, but those close to them. I say to Angela - good for you, for furthering your education and making the effort to find a more productive way of living. Sometimes one needs to geographically remove themselves from an area in order to really let go of the past. I'm glad she feels she is able to come back to the UP to enjoy all that is good a beautiful about it, and still carry on with her own life.

When one reads these posts, it seems like there is a lot of U.P. natives that have left the U.P. to reside and live throughout the U.S.

The next calendar could be a picture and recipe collection.

Angela, Ouch! But I guess that everyone is entitled to their opinions. UP folks are very well educated...have 'real' jobs and 'real' careers...and life does not center around the 'watering hole'.

Just a thought -if we all had stayed it would not be the UP as we know it. There are many different reasons that people move away. I did not move away because I didn't like the UP. Hal had been transferred to Memphis and I joined him to get married.

I purchased a copy of the recipe book "Holey Moley" from Little Brothers Friends of the Elderly here in Hancock. Great recipes with stories of some of the local elderly they visit. It was a great investment for the stories even if I never get to try one of the recipes.

Hello, everyone is right about the job situation in the UP and in particular the Copper Country. The good jobs are hard to find and there are too few of them to keep our most valuable resource, our children, here in the area to make their living. BUT, and a big BUT, sitting on the barstool is a "choice", and most people in the area have not made that choice.

My mom always made cole slaw with pineapple and mini marshmallows too. It was one of my favorites as a kid (along with pasties of course), and I make it for my family to this day. I was born and raised in the Copper Country, and it is so great to read the wonderful comments shared by fellow Yoopers. It brings back fond memories on many subjects, including recipes. I agree that a recipe book as a fundraiser would be terrific! On another note, sure wish I could be in Dollar Bay for the 4th of July. That is among my best childhood memories in the 50's and 60's--dressing up and going in the parade with my cousins and all the fun races in the afternoon. Do they still have a celebration like that?

Between the line reading is best done from a bar stool isn't it? It doesn't hurt to own the bar stool either.

Green acers is the place for me.Farm living is the way to be.I'am more in the country now then I was for 18 years in the Keeweenaw.Just to go shopping at IGA,6 miles,along the way I see horses,cows,goats,field's of bailed hay,old barns,old farm house's. East Tennessee is the home place I want to be,the place I want to come home to is where I grew up unchanged in not so many ways.The lakes and all the beauitfull sites to see will remain for ever.Maybe one day the whole place will become a National Park to perserve it for the World to see.

My parents and two brothers are very lucky to live in Houghton and Kewennaw counties. As for me, each year I get older is another year closer to retiring to the Copper Country! My kids love to visit Grandma and Grandpa and other relatives in the UP! I just wish I was a bit closer so we could visit more often.

I envy those of you who live in the UP. I am sure it is
not without sacrifice. Although my hsband and I have
worked hard all our life we put all our money into our
children's upbringing and education. This means living
in a humble abode, needing new carpeting and driving
cars that have many miles. Yet, we are able to enjoy
your wonderful land and all of you in it one time a year.
I guess it's all about choices. Besides there are a lot of
bar stools in cities too.

As my wife likes to say, poor Angela sure caught a lot of
northerns with her bar stool comment. Personally, I have always
thought it a weakness of our area down here on the Ohio border
that we have so few bars. Esky was great for bars in the mid
-20th Century, and I have heard that even libraries in Houghton
served a few brews way back when. (Maybe even now?) So
maybe Angela was waxing nostalgic with her comments. Just
because a person mentions bars, people (especially Yoopers)
shouldn't see that as a negative comment.

Real Yoopers wouldn't see Angela's post as negative. They would laugh and say SO WHAT! Now everybody take a deep breath and say SO WHAT!

"The Library" is the name.. of a bar in Houghton..
But.. when I lived in Esky in the 70's it is said that it had the highest per capita number of bars for a city of 10 to 15.000 in the U.S., 34 or so I think..

Pete..Lucky you if you can find a bar stool at Dreamland on a Friday night after Memorial Day!!!....but it is worth the wait!!....In the good-old days that is where we spent our Friday nights....and we had lots of educated folks and uneducated folks sitting with us.... some of the uneducated ones were smarter and more sucessful... I have learned after many years that it doesn't matter how many degrees you have it is the SISU (common sense) that will get you through life no matter where you live....... (Angela .....my hubby graduated from UofM with a MS degree and we loved Ann Arbor the two years we lived there...but we couldn't wait to get back to the UP to raise our family).....In the UP you are accepted for the quality of who you are. Can't get too Uppity or your family or friends will set you straight!! Integrity matters!!.. Gosh I wish I was on that bar stool at Dreamland....say hi to Jim and Gladys for me.

CC yooper, yes Dollar Bay still has the parade and it is much larger than it was years ago. I think it is the Firemen who BBQ Chicken and sell plates. You would not believe how many people come to town! If you don't have a relative in town that you can park at you have do a good bit of walking. There is also a Reunion at Sandy Bottom after the Parade. I think they sell pasties. Sandy Bottom is much improved and even has a pavillion now and Picnic tables. Really nice! I believe they have street dancing also. I was home in O2 for the All School Reunion and we sure enjoyed "the 4th". Our family and friends all gather at my sister's house to watch the parade go by. She lives on the street that goes from the old P.O. to the school.

My mom put pineapple in her cole slaw and sometimes at Christmas she would add a few Marachino cherries on top for decoration.

A PastY Cam cookbook sounds like a good idea to me.

PS:.guess I should clarify that there was a lot more than a bar at the Dreamland Hotel....Dreamland is a wonderful restaurant known for their great fish-frys as well as a gathering spot for the Bootjack crowd and it is always so much fun to see who was in Lake Linden cause they always ended up at the Dreamland Hotel on Friday night. We had a family cottage at Bootjack and it was tradition to be at Dreamland for the Friday night fish-fry...I sure miss it all.

Fran,Ga - Thanks for the update on the Dollar Bay 4th of July. Glad to hear it is still as good as ever. I hope some day I can make it back there to be a part of the festivities. Also glad to hear about Sandy Bottom. That is another great childhood memory spending glorious summer days there with my mom, Grandma & Grandpa Laplander and many aunties, uncles & cousins. Such a beautiful place. It's just not the same out here in the 100+ temps of AZ!
