One month from today: Pasty Fest 2005 in Calumet. Stay tuned in June for more info on the competition, and how you can get a free pasty.

Waaaaaaa...sniffle...sniffle. Wish we were going to make it to the Pasty Fest. Had planned to hit the Pasty Fest and then head to Traverse City for the Cherry Fest...but a postponement in a court date for a case has put our UP vacation on hold this summer. We are aiming to head to the UP in the fall now...hopefully.

On a brighter note, I cleaned out the deep freezer this week and came across a lost pasty and a container of gravy from last summer's UP visit. :)

sur5er. I'll split it with you and bring a big bowl of wilted lettuce. Mom ofter served it with pasties. ...Bye the bye...does anyone know if there's a big art show in Marquette in the summer. Went to one years ago, think it's near the water in a big park on north side of city. If I can't make the Pasty Fest want to go to the art show and look up several cousins too.

Cindy, I too loved your story that you posted in 'Blast from the Past'.

Ms. Katie, there are TWO MArquette art shows the last weekend of July!! They are only about a mile apart (Presque Isle Park and Picnic Park). Beautiful locations for both. Well worth planning a trip around! One is called the Outback Show and the other is Art on the Rocks. I am usually there but will be in Bayfield Wisc. for a show this year!! The shows still get applications from artists all over the country....stop by and check them out!

On a side note, I hope Sharon gets her answer soon. A big hug and hang in there Sharon!

WOW, acording to the Weather Channel's website it is 93 and partly cloudy in Mohawk. Sounds like a trip to Eagle River for a dip in the lake would be perfect. Wish I was there instead of GB, it's only 77 here. See you all in 28 days!

Ms. Katie and Sur5er (love that name!), since you have dinner and coffee all taken care of, I'll finish (Finnish!!)it off by bringing Toni's molasses cookies!! My grandmother taught me how to make wilted salad years ago but we always had/have coleslaw with pasties. Man, you guys are making me hungry!! Shall be back up there for the summer in less than two weeks. Hope this WARM weather holds and the bugs stay away! Fat chance on either count!!

best salad for pasties is a fruit salad, bananas anb oranges sliced together with a little sugar added. at least that is my opinion,,,made 20 of em on Sunday,,,,yum, yum,,

Yooper in Indiana....Funny, I bought extra bananas and oranges yesterday to make that salad.....maybe it's a Yooper thing!! I agree...yum yum!

After reading maijaMi's post i went back and read Cindy's post and noted no one ever answered her question:

Yes, I read Cindy's message and I do remember the the Juntunens. I thought I would drop hera line.They lived up the hill from us also. Her uncle Stanley was nicknamed "Chicky". He was older than me,closer in age to my older brothers and sisters. My Dad was friends with Emil. I'll bet RCW knows more than me but he just got home from the hospital last night. He is o.k. but tired. I'llo reread her note and see if I can add to it.

I don't think the Pullman train ever came to Dollar Bay. Whenever I rode it with my sister to Milwaukee we had to board in Houghton. I know the Greyhounds would stop and let you out on the hwy in Dollar Bay. The trains she heard were probably the one's that went right by our house. There were 2 tracks back then and trains went by regularly.There are some old buildings left down by the lake in Dollar Bay.I don't know if any are in use for anything.Maybe someone that lives there now can let us know. If I am not mistaken the Juntenan house is still there.

It's me of the late responses....just in off of my week-end and getting caught up. Loved the stories from Cindy...reminded me a lot of my own childhood...which was wonderful! Am definitely one of the lucky ones. Sur5er, ref your beloved Pinto...my first was an old Nash Rambler stationwagon...stuffing coming out of the seat covers, paid $125.00 for it with 4 new tires and a full tank of gas....however, after taking it out to "see what it could do" on the back roads (some serious washboarding) the driveshaft fell out. That was another $175.00! We called her "Old Cruddy" with good reason, but she was a stick and a real good time! :) Would hate to have anyone see me try to drive a stick today...it's been more years than I care to admit!

Susan, Great to hear from you again. Thought that perhaps you were busy at work, with it being spring...and that's when things get crazy. Just when I think things are slowing down here, I get swamped with paperwork again. Sigh.

My best friend in high school had a 4-door Rambler...what a cowinkiedink. We were talking on the phone last weekend, how we would go cruisin in the 70's...while listening to rock and roll on CKLW (AM) and WWWW (FM). Boy, were those the days.

About the stick shift, I can still drive a stick...never forgot...and I even use both feet for the brake/accelerator when driving an automatic. The first time I drove a squad car, my training officer took one look at me braking with my left foot and accelerating with my right foot and laughed so hard. Then he made some comment about being afraid I would stall the squad car. Men...sigh. I popped the squad car in reverse and whipped it around a couple of times, "see...better control with both feet" ;) He never teased me after that.
