With the arrival of summer almost a week ago, so too, came the summer temperatures here in the U.P. Sometimes it seems like there’s no in-between here UP north. We either have HOT or SNOW... I know, I know, I’m exaggerating a bit, but the warm temps addle my brain. Good thing there are a number of ways to keep your cool and get your wits back in order, when the temperatures soar. Bob Gilreath heads up the list with a dip in Lake Superior, from Agate Beach, at the Stanton Township Park. Then for those of you that can’t get to the shores of the Big Lake, when the temperatures climb, Chris Koskiniemi reminds us that there’s always cooling fun right there in your own backyard. You can run through the sprinkler or slide into coolness on one of those new-fangled water fun toys! Maybe I’ll just stick to my little plastic backyard pool. Ahh...refreshing!

July 2nd is quickly approaching. If you haven’t made your plans to be in Calumet for Pasty Fest 2005, you still have 5 days left to get busy on it! No matter your age, there’ll be something fun for you to do. You don’t want to be one of those looking at the pictures afterwards, lamenting, “Wish I had been there!”

Ahhhh I can feel the cool water! We are in for another hot day. (But anyone who complains about the heat isn't allowed to complain about the cold come February.) I think I will spend this afternoon in the hammock under the trees, with a sprinkler running on me. Thanks for the photos; the top is my desktop for the heat wave's duration.

By julie b., MI on Monday, June 27, 2005 - 05:51 am:

That water looks so good in the midst of all this heat! {You know its bad when 85 looks cool!} And no, i never complain about the cold!

By Bill in Bama. on Monday, June 27, 2005 - 06:31 am:

Looks like the GREAT SAND BAY between Eagle River and Eagle Harbor!

By NKR Mishawaka IN on Monday, June 27, 2005 - 06:50 am:

Good morning from Mishawaka IN. If I could run (I do a slow trot), I would run down that hill and right into Lake Superior. Its going to be 95° today and even tho the lake is cold I think it would feel pretty good. Stay cool everyone.

By Bob on Monday, June 27, 2005 - 06:54 am:

hit this album for the rest of the agate beach shots, and try to identify the TRACKS in the Sand.

The lake certainly looks appealing amist all this heat!!! I wish I could take a dip in it right now and it's only 7:50 in the morning!!!

By Kathy from Ann Arbor/Cheboygan on Monday, June 27, 2005 - 08:02 am:

I was at the Soo last Friday (hope all you boatnerds got there for Engineers Day), and at Cheboygan Saturday & Sunday---all were much cooler and nicer than Ann Arbor when I got back Sunday night. I went swimming in Lake Huron & sure wish I could do the same today--it' supposed to be 95.

By Bobby T. Mich on Monday, June 27, 2005 - 08:31 am:

Life in Michigan is full of contrasts. We go from Cold to Hot, not only in da UP but down here in toll-land. There are not too many times you can say, Lake Superior looks inviting. This is one of those times. Enjoy it if you can.

By Down State Dave on Monday, June 27, 2005 - 08:35 am:

Never have found an agate on Agate Beach --- but then I wasn't looking very hard either. ;>) Too busy looking at the lake, I guess. Great picture Mr. Gilreath!

By Margaret, Amarillo TX on Monday, June 27, 2005 - 08:44 am:

Bob: boy oh boy what I'd give to be sleeping in that tent. On the tracks==a gull, a turtle and something small like a raccoon?

By SLD, MI on Monday, June 27, 2005 - 08:49 am:

Great Pic. Can't wait to visit soon.

By Kate, CA on Monday, June 27, 2005 - 09:53 am:

Seeing that top photo makes me wish I could run down that hill shouting "towanda" and jump right into the lake. Very inviting photo! Of course we all know that once I hit the water I'd probably be shouting something other than "towanda"! Enjoy, everyone!

By Kate, CA on Monday, June 27, 2005 - 10:00 am:

Nice Album, Bob.
Tracks: Deer, eagle or crow, bobcat, gull, lizard, mountain bike, raccoon, atv, snake (not in that order, but some I could make out. Is there a pasty for a prize?

By Lorelei on Monday, June 27, 2005 - 05:16 pm:

The biting flies are very active at Agate Beach today. Make sure if you are not in the water you have both hands free to swat at your ankles :P

By FLYIN my MOONEY on Monday, June 27, 2005 - 07:32 pm:

SAND BAY...........shoot me if I am wrong.......LOL Cat Harbour...pop of 3

By Ronald Oregon on Monday, June 27, 2005 - 09:19 pm:

Agate Beach Park is actually located on Carver's Bay in Toivola. A
name that I don't remember ever being used by anyone.

The next bay over is Misery Bay, also in Toivola. A name that is
and always has been used.

I recognize this location, but did not know that the concrete
ramp under all this sand is now all sanded over. (Am I right Joyce
Tormala?)

I have not visited for many years.

By Arniedafinn, MN on Monday, June 27, 2005 - 10:07 pm:

Ahhh the lake looks great, makes one wish they were back in the UP. I recognize Agate Beach as I grew up in Toivola and spent many summer days hanging out there. I never heard anyone calling it Carver's Bay when I was a youngster.

By Joyce Tormala Toivola on Monday, June 27, 2005 - 10:59 pm:

Great summertime pictures today! Great pictures EVERY day!! I must be getting old; instead of heading to the beach today,I washed clothes and hung them outside.
If the truth be told, the flies have been miserable! A day at the beach is no day at the beach. The off-shore wind and humidity turns them in to mean biting machines. Better days are coming. I won't give up. I even trimmed my toenails to avoid injuring myself while kicking and scraping my legs and feet. I can still hop on one foot without falling down too many times. I forgot, once again,to swathe in beach towels.
Ron,the ramp is still there! You can access the beach with a little help. If not this year, there's next year,or the next. It will always be there! The location of the Agate Beach picture is south of the ramp, between the park and the Little Elm. Am I right?

By Ronald Oregon on Monday, June 27, 2005 - 11:46 pm:

Yep... Thanks Joyce.

I remember those flies and don't miss them at all.

Nice to hear from you too Arnold.

How come the new photo isn't coming up?
I see it on the front page.
Any how, good morning all from sunny California.

By troll person on Tuesday, June 28, 2005 - 06:17 am:

Kevin K - I'm wondering the same thing.
Good morning.

By Dave - Corryton,TN. on Tuesday, June 28, 2005 - 06:38 am:

I'am wondering the same thing too, however i know they had some bad weather in the U.P. over night. Good morning from TN.

By Bob on Tuesday, June 28, 2005 - 08:37 am:

Joyce, good eye, we were camped in the second spot from the swing arm past the boat launch and I crossed the dune just to the left of the site.

Isn't it amazing what you see when you slow down and look, I had a blast taking all the track shots.
