With the blazing heat we've had this week, I thought it would be nice to take a dip in the Big Lake - - well, not exactly a dip, since the airy shot was taken high above sea level by Rick Anderson over at Skypixs. Quite a lofty view of the Pictured Rocks near Munising, providing the opportunity to see several of the amazing formations at once. Then we take a more traditional view of the scenery, closer to sea level (actually Lake Superior level!), with Trisia Kappler. Miner's Castle gets plenty of folks snapping shots of it, but you don't see this side of the castle quite as often.

Hey, it's a great day to be alive in the U.P., especially considering the alternatives. Have a nice Saturday, and see you in one week at Pasty Fest 2005 in Calumet!

Breath-taking!! WOW!

By JK on Saturday, June 25, 2005 - 08:18 am:

I've always wanted to do an aerial tour of this part of the UP. I've been many places in our great state and country and the Pictured Rocks is still my favorite.

By Mary Ann, WY on Saturday, June 25, 2005 - 08:23 am:

Wow! What beautiful photos! It is fun to see the beauty of the UP from the air.

I remember flying over the U.P. in the old Blue Goose (North Central Airlines--dating myself, I know) during peak color season and the landscape truly looked like a tapestry. It really doesn't matter what the season is, the U.P. is always beautiful. Love these photos from the Munising area.

By erica Florida Keys on Saturday, June 25, 2005 - 10:04 am:

The Munising area is one of my favorites ---always reminds me of the Traverse City area (where I was born)when I was a kid and the TC area was not so crowded. Now I prefer the UP over all of lower Michigan.

By Sherri, Da UP on Saturday, June 25, 2005 - 10:08 am:

Great pictures, I always enjoy other peoples pictures.

By NKR Mishawaka IN on Saturday, June 25, 2005 - 10:24 am:

Good morning from Mishawaka IN. Beautiful pictures. I love to see different pictures of Lake Superior because the lake is always a different color or different mood.

By gmw on Saturday, June 25, 2005 - 12:19 pm:

Thanks for the beautiful pictures! Closest thing
to being there. Nothing like the Upper Pennisula
for scenery pictures.

someone mentioned BLUE GOOSE -- North Central airlines - I took it from Detroit City airport to Iron Mountain - once I even carried on a puppy - and not in a container - the flight attendents carried her on, and I think every passenger got to hold her (a very very cute fluffy puppy) But it was a good airlines - and flew out of the middle of Detroit - did not have to travel 20 miles to the major airports..

By Margaret, Amarillo TX on Saturday, June 25, 2005 - 02:11 pm:

I just love that color of blue. I'm sure it's a little on the chilly side, but with the weather the way it is, who cares. Time for a dip.

By Geri, California on Saturday, June 25, 2005 - 03:28 pm:

Finnlander Blue is what we Finns call it for the beautiful blue water in the U.P. I also flew North Central Airlines to the U.P. many times through the years. Remember jet service to the airport? Sure do miss home as always. The U.P. goes with all of us who were born & raised there no matter where our lives take us.

By RCW on Saturday, June 25, 2005 - 05:33 pm:

Geeri, Calif. Check of my gallery for some old photo's of the so called Blue Goose, and CMX airport.Everyone mistakenly called it a Blue Goose, however actually the bird in the logo represents a Mallard Duck, Robert C Wetton

Interesting ... today's shot and June 23rd last year.
Pictured Rocks area is such a wonderful place. Always wanted to do some hiking along those high cliffs. Maybe someday I will.

Actually Doug, the June 23rd photo from last year, wasn't the Pictured Rocks area, it was somewhere in the Keweenaw, but I don't think it was ever established exactly where. Kayaking around either area would be fun too! :->

By Gordy, IL on Saturday, June 25, 2005 - 06:39 pm:

Actually the 2003 photo, if you look in the Guest Gallery, Paul said his photo was taken about 3 miles north of the Portage Canal south entry.

By Fran, hotter than heck in Ga on Saturday, June 25, 2005 - 06:51 pm:

Those North central pilots sure knew how to fly planes. Bad weather didn't bother them. I flew in from Detroit one night and it was a real blizzard. My friend and I landed safe and sound. The hardest part was getting down to the Bay.

That sure is some pretty water.I wish I was close enough to take a leap(ah step)in.LOL

By ldetki, Hancock on Saturday, June 25, 2005 - 07:12 pm:

Like them pictures. The UP where I live and know. There are parts I don't get to see often. Nice to visit online.

By FLYIN da MOONEY fer sure on Saturday, June 25, 2005 - 08:00 pm:

North Central pilots were legend for their ability to make the ticket with the equipment they had at the time. Today we enjoy GPS, on board real time radar, and all the toys....Those guys, like the miners, the early tradesmen, and the gals who made it all worthwhile were a people apart. We may never see folks with such determination again.....(Teach your kids Chinese as they will probably need it shortly....just as Kurt Vonnegut predicted back in the 60's)

By Beverly, San Jose on Saturday, June 25, 2005 - 09:40 pm:

Very nice photo gallery, jAPEi, as are the skypixs by Rick. Wish I had that view in my backyard.

By Mr. Bill on Saturday, June 25, 2005 - 10:15 pm:

Sat at a wedding reception tonight with a senior Northwestern flight attendant, who started with North Central. We swapped tales of flying the Blue Goose into "tragic city", Alpena, Houghton, and all points between.

She'd actually lost a fellow pilot and flight attendant, during a lay over in Houghton, when they drowned in a boating mishap. Whoa, heavy duty.

By jon/mn on Saturday, June 25, 2005 - 11:02 pm:

In '67 a North Central flight would originated in Detroit, land in Grand Rapids, Green Bay, Memominee (11 Minutes) Escanaba and then Houghton. On other flights it would land in Lansing, Iron Mountain and Marquette. As they say "those were the days"

By RCW on Sunday, June 26, 2005 - 10:40 am:

Boy sure wouldn't mind talking to that lady Mr Bill , I probably knew her from back in those days. The conditions those pilots landed in those days would be a NO No these days.

By Helen in Hubbell on Sunday, June 26, 2005 - 08:50 pm:

Hey Erica in the Keys........lets trade places for the winter.....eh????

I went to the keys for the first time a year and ahalf ago...........it was wonderful!!!! I loved it. My uncle used to always vacation in Marathon. Would I love to have the $$$$ to spend winter's there, and the summers here....would that be sweet or what!!!

By Mary Lou on Monday, June 27, 2005 - 05:48 am:

Mr Bill.....My parents were the ones who discovered the body of the pilot floating in the waters off of our camp in Bootjack. Mom and Dad were out fishing in our boat and my mother spotted the sun shinning off of the head and asked my father "what is that"???...My father, who was a retired police officer from Kenosha Wi had participated in a number of recoveries. He recognized that it was a body and went into shore to call the police. My mother would not allow the body to be brought up at our cottage so they brought it up at a neighbors dock. Dad used the story to warn us off the lake when boating. He said get into shore when seeing the smallest "white-cap"......he said Portage was dangerous in a storm because it was shallow. The Pilot and the stewardess went out fishing and the storm came up and they didn't get off the lake.....

By RCW on Monday, June 27, 2005 - 07:52 am:

Mary Lou. I was out searching that morning also, I think I had just passed by when he popped up.Actually I had just started working at the airport that summer.

By Mary Lou on Monday, June 27, 2005 - 09:03 am:

RCW......The pilot's body was taken into John Jukuri's beach...next door to our place...(Jukuris were not at there place so they would not have the memory)......My mother said she couldn't ever enjoy her view of the lovely sunsets, ever again if it had been taken into our place next door...(my mom was upset).........good to know you are well and back at your place enjoying the sunsets....I miss our place but I couldn't keep it up after Gary died. I held out until the perfect family came along to buy it. (only wanted responsible residents for Bootjack) They are a lovely family and have restored the old log cabin that "Johhny Bootjack" built.....we were just using it for storage and it's days were numbered......it is now standing straight and proud once again.. Hope you get to meet the new owners.......

By RCW on Monday, June 27, 2005 - 01:47 pm:

I ve been trying to remember those names Mary Lou, but they won't come to me. Yes we sure are enjoying the lakeshore still. Believe it or not but my Dad hits 100 in about 2 weeks!!!!Just took a quick trip to town and its like an oven up there
