According to Aladino Mandoli, this young man is celebrating his graduation from Marquette Senior High School in quite an exhilarating way. You know the saying about courage, it goes like this - "The first step is the hardest". This first step would take more than courage to get me to take it, since that second step looks to be quite a drop and into chilly Lake Superior this time of year? No thanks! I think I'll stick with the young man in the third photo, who seems to be sitting in a perfect viewing spot for the jumping festivities, on the cliffs near Marquette Harbor.

You can jump right into the Pasty Fest 2005 festivities in Calumet, on July 2nd. There will be fun for all ages, starting with a parade at 10:00 a.m., ending with music and dancing in the evening. It'll be a day packed with U.P. fun and you can fill your tummy with a free pasty if you're one of the first 400 people to show up at Agassiz Park with that magic coupon. Ten days and counting!

Good Morning from North Carolina. Heading North to Marquette and Big Bay in just over a week! --

Swam across the Portage once but I never had the guts to go cliff jumping or polar bear swimming.

Oh to have cool Lake Superior to jump into on a hot, hot day!!! Wishing I was there *sigh*

You know, my fondest memories are of being a four year old and getting on the bus at granma's and going out to Lakeside Park (Ashland) to learn to swim--and yes, good old Gitchee Gumie! My cousin and I didn't know we were "braving" the coldest lake in the 48.

You know...I never had the courage to jump into the Cove, but both my kids have done it more than once. Scared me more than it did them!

Brings me back to my days at NMU, don't think I'd make that jump until about August when the Lake is just cold, not freezing! Ha- great fun!

Those rocks at Presque Isle are great fun for jumping off - and yes, the water is nice and cold too... been there and done that many times....

What courage! The jump wouldn't bother me, but the ice cold water waiting below might do me in!!! I agree with Uncle Chuck, I'd wait until August too!!! 5 weeks and counting till our trip North!

That young boy in the third picture is sitting near one of my all time favorite spots on Presque Isle. The water, although cold, does look inviting!

I spent 4 years up at NMU...cliff diving was an annual tradition the first week of classes. I have jumped and taken a dive off those same rocks many a times. Seemed like everyone would be out there. Water wasn't too cold...just chilly!

The third photo looks like it is from a ways down the shore from the cove where we would jump. That is one long way down where the young lad is sitting and it is a very rocky shoreline in that spot. Lots of people would rock climb that spot.

Oh yea, what a great shot and does that take me back to my NMU days ! I've made that jump on many a day in late Aug. and Sept. I highly suggest it,
cold water or not, just jump ! Thanks loads for the great photo. It brings back some great memories,leaving the friendly confines of Gant Hall, heading out to the cliffs, taking the jump ! Wow, it seems like 10 minutes ago. That photo totally made my day and good luck to all of the new grads !!

In reviewing the first two pictures, I see a lot of enthusiasm demonstrated in that first picture, but in the second picture I believe I see a bit of reluctance to continue with the course of events that have been chosen. What do you think?

Oh, to be young. I have so many memories of swimming at the Calumet Waterworks and few included warm water. Usually very cool, but in the 1950's, swimming in the big cold lake was a treat. Looks like it still is.

Following the progression of pictures I got the impression he was jumping into the fountain of youth. ;)

In the summer what does the lake warm up to.?I couldn't get in cooler that 80 degrees.water temp..Another hot day,about 117 in the shade,I have seen it 122.That is hot..I miss the UP...Bob

Ahh, my first dip this year in Lady Superior (May month) was at a brisk water temp of 42 degrees. A cold caress indeed.

What a great metaphor for graduating from high school. "Taking the plunge", "In over your head" and "Leap of faith" all come to mind. Ahhhh to be young and fearless. I get queasy riding the ferris wheel with my four year old these days:)

If the water temp makes it above 60, you are doing good. But the thermocline is about 24 inches below the surface, so you never get too warm swimming. Especially if you dive.

Now that looks like fun.......Not as much fun as skydiving at CMX in the winter of 68, but close...My heart goes out to all those that look hard at the risk and determine if the reward is worth it..they call them WINNERS...........
