There are a number of harbors along the shores of Gitche Gumee, most of them tricky to maneuver, unless you're a seasoned boater or in a kayak. This steamy shot from Eric Stewart, was taken near Agate Harbor along M-26 and gives you an idea of why it's considered tricky, with the many rock formations sticking up haphazardly from the chilly water. For those of you unfamiliar with the area, Agate Harbor is between Eagle Harbor and Copper Harbor, near Esrey Park. Eric managed to capture the fog and contradictory brightness of a day along the rocky beaches of Lake Superior, illustrating another of her many changing moods.

Speaking of moods, you can be sure that the festivities of Pasty Fest 2005 will put you in a good frame of mind, if you make plans to be in Calumet on July 2nd for the parade, games and fun to be had. Oh, and don't forget the free pasties that the Pasty Central crew will be on hand to give away to the first 400 folks who show up at Agassiz Park with the coupon from last night's Mining Gazette. Only 16 days remain for you to plan to attend!

With rocks like these, you have to re-think the "safe" in safe harbour........Better than the big waves you betcha, but not by much if you come down hard on those babies.....

Will be enjoying this very spot on Saturday. Cannot wait, but am NOT looking forward to the warm (hot) weather that is forcast for next week. I had enough of it down here in troll land the past week.

I love the drive along M-26. The rock formations in the water and on the shore line are awesome--the colors of rock and water and sky and trees just fantastic.

We are coming back up in July , just to see scenes like this. Can't wait.

Just having a look at this site for the 1st time in quite a while. I was lucky enough to pay a visit there late September last year and thought it a very pretty, peaceful and somewhat historical part of the world. Our city ( 90,000 ) was built on gold rather than copper , but mining all the same. The photo posted on the 12th June(and consequent debate ) re: the kids on the fire engine in some parade is very thought provoking.Our small towns, like yours, were decimated of young men in both world wars ( 100,000 dead ; possibly 2 times that badly injured )and maybe our photos would look the same. Then again,maybe it is a classic photo of kids just having fun with minimal parental/adult
involvement.Being a child of the 60s,there is no doubt that we were allowed to do things that we would not allow our own kids to do now , but the 'old days' weren't necessarily the ultimate.This forum is a small example of progress. Enjoy your coming Summer.

Peter from Australia refers to the coming summer, what day will it be this year? Will there be a picnic? LOL! Sure has been a confusing spring. Several 90 degree days here in the first half of June. I don't believe we had any days in the 90's all last year. The water in the picture looks cold.

I just finished watching the slide show of the Portage Lake Lift bridge. My dad worked on the bridge, and it is 7 years today that he passed away. It also is a day of celebration because it is 7 years ago last night that the towers of the portage lake lift bridge were illuminated for the first time, (My dad's dream! and it happened the night he died.) three nights later they were turned off for one night in memory of my dad. My dad may be gone from my presence, but never from my memory. As long as the bridge stands I will have a great picture of my dad's character. I hope you all can say that about your father this Father's Day.

Now you've made me homesick. During the summer I spent in Houghton (the only one of my years at "da Tech", I would always head up there to get my mind off things. I loved sitting on those rocks watching the waves. I really miss it now out here in the desert.

To Tina from MO. When my husband and I were in the UP last April he took a picture of the Lift Bridge and it is in the guest photo gallery under Dennis Valade. I thought it was the perfect picture because of the reflection. I think you may like to have it in memory of your Dad. Happy Father's Day to all the Dads, and thanks for the great childhood memories that all of us children have had going back to your home area of the UP. A part of my heart will always be there!
