Cliffs Dow was a chemical plant that made charcoal. On some days when the wind was blowing the right way, the whole town would smell like chemicals. it was pretty nasty at times. I lived in Marquette from 1959 'til 1971 and know the region well during that time period. my folks built a house on Lk Superior on Lakewood Lane about eight miles out of town and at that time the road was partly gravel (unpaved). Clffs Dow did eventually shut down as the university bought the land to build housing, and it was a welcome sight to see it go. I would like to share my experiences growing up in Marquette with any who wish to do the same. Has anyone seen or know the whereabouts of David Dooley or Dale Britton, both good friends of mine who lived on Lakewood Lane during the late 60's. Or David Kemp, Maryanne Cardonnie, or Myrymn Nelson whose father lost his legs in an accident on the oar docks in the late 50's. I guess I miss the UP much more than I care to admit. Seems it gets into your blood and never goes away no matter how long you've been away. Hope to hear from someone from that era, would like to share memories.
