If a robin has made a nest on the top of a tire of a car that you need to use soon, do you move it while it's still eggs- or would hatched birds be easier for mama to find? It would be moved about 8 feet away.

moi: if you move it, the mother will abandon the eggs because of the human scent.

With that being a robin...and the state bird, you may have to wait until the eggs hatch and the babies fly away. I don't think you are allowed to touch it. Check with the DNR ;)

Robins seem to have a talent for building their nests in inconvenient places. I had one build its nest on a shelf bracket next to my front door. I stopped using the door for a month till they were gone. If you type "Journey North American Robin" into your browser you'll get an excellent tutorial on nesting robins. They state that the robin identifies its young by sight and sound, not smell. So if the babies are hatched when you move the nest I think she would find them again. If they stay where they are, a predator will probably get them and solve your problem nature's way. A passing raccoon, cat or dog, or maybe even a skunk will be able to reach them. Sur5fer's point about checking with the DNR is well taken. A phone call wouldn't hurt, but since the nest is not in the wild and is preventing your use of the car, I don't think they will give you any grief about it. Good luck.

Just wanted to let you know my Uncle Bill Alcenius passed away Monday evening. He was the last of the Alcenuis family.

I have a close relative in the DNR, but I'll let them stick to managing only the wilds. I'd rather just try myself to do what's best for the bird babies. If they do indeed go by sight and sound, I'll wait till they hatch, then move it. This is definitely a prime spot for a coon, fox, or dog to grab an easy dinner!
Last year one nested under the deck. Every time we'd go outside the poor mother would just about have a heart attack! Sadly, she pecked the hatchling to death- even though it hadn't ever been touched by people.

She feared a worse fate.

Songbirds have no sense of smell...

SDC,I was sorry to learn of Mr Alcenius's death.I am sure a lot of history went with him. My family and I are doing as well as can be expected under the circumstances. They say time heals so we try to get thru one day at a time.

Mary,thanks for putting on the link for the Atlas Powder Plant discussion. I plan to print out all I can find for my kids and grandson. It will help them to know just what was done at the Plant when their Dad and Papa worked there.

I forgot to mention that Alex had surgery on his hand. He had Carpal tunnel Syndrome in both hands. The surgery was Monday and was successful. He called yesterday and said that one feels great but the other one is killing him.

Just a note to let SDC, Ferndale, Mi know that some of the alcenius family still lives on out here in Colorado. Don't remember much of the family tree, but my Grandpa was Edwin H Alcenius. I think that was a brother of William (might be Willard).
