Good Morning Everyone, 37 degrees, cloudy. Today is MAY DAY. I was told in Cornwall, England, people used to dance around the MAY Pole. Have a great day, stay warm!

Just read yesterdays news about the pit bull finally they got it thank god no one got hurt just can't believe it took over three weeks (if not more to get one dog)there should be harder laws and fines for this maybe we wouldn't have to walk with big sticks like we do.

By aloha on Sunday, May 1, 2005 - 10:19 am:

happy lei day too!

By copper country resident on Sunday, May 1, 2005 - 11:07 am:

WALKER-CALUMET, Word has it that the dog had puppies & was too protective over them, therefore
the owner decided to get rid of the dog. Haven't
heard if the dog actually bit someone or not. That's when the Baraga Co Sheriffs got involved.

Anyone hear the NPR show this morning "the
Splendid Table" ("for people who LOVE to eat")?

The subject of pasties and Michigan came up, but
after figuring out how to pronounce the word, the
hosts of the show never got any farther north or
west than Grand Traverse in their quest for the
perfect pasty. What's up with that?

Another example of the UP getting short changed
at the fag end of creation?

By 2004/2005 on Sunday, May 1, 2005 - 02:19 pm:

On the page where it shows the daily photos, you have an advertisement showing you will get a free 2004 calendar with an order. I think it should read '2005' :)

This wandering pit bull is as only as smart as it's owners. learned everything it knows by the owners "training".

By Big City Headaches on Sunday, May 1, 2005 - 03:18 pm:

I'll take a pitbull on the streets over some of the kids and gangs that run our streets!

By cc-mich. on Sunday, May 1, 2005 - 03:26 pm:

the red garter was not a high class place. People dressed casual. Who has to dress up to go out to eat anyways?

By j.k. michigan on Sunday, May 1, 2005 - 03:28 pm:

Same goes for the kids, they only know what there taught at home.

By S. Fulcher on Sunday, May 1, 2005 - 08:34 pm:

ja pei--- where was the Vappu picture taken in Finland??

By maijaMI on Sunday, May 1, 2005 - 08:51 pm:

cc-mich: agree! If I had to dress up, I wouldn't go!

By Dave of Mohawk on Sunday, May 1, 2005 - 09:14 pm:

Walker Calumet: It was the police that the dog got away from; not the owner. I don't know why anyone would want a dog like that in the first place. Some people say that it's not the breed but that it's the way the dog is raised; well I don't think that I buy that, most attacks are pit bulls, german shepheds, malamutes and rottwiellers [sp]?. When was the last time you heard of someone being attacked by a collie, golden retreiver or a beagle? Our family has a St. Bernard and she is the most gentle and loving dog I've ever seen; I suppose you could make her mean by mistreating or abusing her. I'm a dog lover but not particularly fond of the guard dog types, not to say that some of them aren't good dogs.

By Steve in Iowa on Sunday, May 1, 2005 - 10:25 pm:

I agree with Dave of Mohawk. The guard dog types were bred for that purpose over a long period of time. No matter how much love you shower on them, that breeding can still come out. Pit Bulls didn't get that name by being good family pets.

By sur5er on Sunday, May 1, 2005 - 11:26 pm:

Dave,

Rottweilers are some of the most gentle dogs...as are malemutes. It's all in how the dog is raised. I have a companion dog that is a Chow Chow German Sheppard...and in the wrong hands, I am sure she would be quite a vicious dog. I have raised her to be a very loving dog. Yes, she is protective of me, and is a working dog...but she has not been bred or raised to attack.
In all honesty, there is no reason for someone to raise a dog to attack...and any breed of dog in the hands of someone like that would be dangerous. Sigh.

By sur5er on Sunday, May 1, 2005 - 11:40 pm:

Hubby and I went into Chicago today, for a family party. Enroute, hubby remarked about how he cannot wait until we move to Keweenaw...something about sitting in a ten lane traffic jam will do that to yah, eh.

Number one reason hubby wants to move to da UP..."No expressways".

One of hubby's cousins sat next to me at the party, and started talking about Keweenaw. YES!! He heads that way twice a year for fishing trips with his buddies and he takes along this huge telescope of his for star gazing at night. Made me so homesick. Sigh.
Got a date for star gazing with his 'star gazing nerds',as he calls them...won't be da UP...and der won't be any northern lights...but I can pretend...right?

S.Fulcher - I reckon that VAPPUkuva is taken TURKU (south-west coastcity) in observatoryhill..

By J.T. on Monday, May 2, 2005 - 07:35 am:

Dave, Mohawk: Your response gave me a chuckle! We own a handsome blk/tan, 110 llb. male Doberman Pinscher...if you were to set foot on our property and I told him to "get ya" he would run out to you, tail wagging, and lick you to death! Just for the record, a neighbor was asked by our county to surrender a black lab because of disposition problems. it's not the dog....it's the training of the dog by the lack or talent of the owners that make a dog!

By Pat on Monday, May 2, 2005 - 08:22 am:

Dave & Steve...Yes it is true that the guard/working breed dog is not for everyone, however, I think of these loyal dogs just like anybody who appoints themselves to be a nation's honor person to make themselves available to protect our nation's freedom and honor. Such honorable people as those fine men and women in our military and law enforcement. You don't think of these people as "meaner" type of people because they opted for that lifestyle now do you? I didn't think so. They have all trained to be our nations protecters, as the guard dog has been bred to do as well. Guard dogs are no different than any dog, unless training, good or bad, is a factor. They have the same ability to be a loving member of the family as any other breed!

By dog-luv-r on Monday, May 2, 2005 - 09:59 am:

"I don't know why anyone would want a dog like that in the first place anyway".... that to me is a personnal attack!

By sur5er on Monday, May 2, 2005 - 10:32 am:

J.T., Too funny about your 'attack' doggie. You can tell that he was raised in a very loving home and raised properly.
My companion dog is a hoot. When I answer the door, she will sit at attention by me, looking all tough...but her biggest give away, is her tail thumping loudly on the floor.
Since I take her everywhere with me, people are amazed by how gentle she is. I have done a lot of educating of people in store parking lots about companion dogs, and dogs in general, not being 'attack dogs'. Sigh.

By J.T. on Monday, May 2, 2005 - 10:52 am:

sur5er: oh yes! our Dobie is a real mennice to society! I forgot to mention that he would attack in that manner if first he would be willing to get off the couch! I do know of a Dobie that was a threat.....this dog was nearly starved, beaten on a daily basis, tied up on a short tie out, and just handled abusively over and over by it's owners...now I ask you, who's fault was it for this Dobie to develope this attitude? I'll answer that....the dog was taken into rescue and the owners were fined and charged with animal cruelity. As long as there are Humane Societies around there have to be lousy pet owners nearby!

By J.T. on Monday, May 2, 2005 - 11:41 am:

just a thought....the pit bull, also know as the Staffordshire terrier, is recognized by the A.K.C. as a terrier, not a working breed, such as the Doberman, German Shepards, Rottweilers, Akita's, Boxers, etc.

By J.T. on Monday, May 2, 2005 - 11:48 am:

the St.Bernard is also included in the A.K.C.'s working group. There my .02$ has now added up to $5.00.
