What a great spot to 'set a spell', with such an awesome vista spread out before your eyes. Nate Alwine captured a shot of the beauty, along with two of his companions on the hike, Toby and Miss Beasly. Lucky dogs to be treated to a trip along Piers Gorge, near Norway, to check out the progress of the budding leaves on the U.P. trees. If I'm not mistaken I think that might be Miss Beasly's first trip to those heights, so I bet that's why the little pooch seems to be taking a bit of a rest before moving on. The last two shots, looking to the west and east, give you a better perspective of the various colors the leaves produce in the spring. Maybe not as colorful as the fall display, but pretty nonetheless.

Isn't that just like a bird to take the top spot

I love this kind of scenery--not quite set in place and trying to bloom wherever. Gorgeous, just gorgeous.

By Debra, Muskegon, MI on Thursday, May 19, 2005 - 07:53 am:

I love these pictures - thank you Nate! Oh how I wish I were there now......

By Selma on Thursday, May 19, 2005 - 08:43 am:

Nice pictures. The many shades of green in the second picture makes you really want to see it when the trees have their leaves on.

Roudy, like you, I saw the dog as a large bird sitting there!

By Roudy Mi on Thursday, May 19, 2005 - 12:25 pm:

That makes more sense to my simple mind.

I thought the dog was a Crow or Raven with the other dog sneaking up on it.It was nice to see the color of Spring come here too,but it has been here for sometime. Thanks for letting me see the hills back home today.

Those pics of dogs remind me of a story about a wolf. This
past weekend a brother-in-law of mine from Esky was trekking
into a little lake in the Hiawatha Forest to do some fishing when
suddenly he was looking into the eyes of a wolf. He knew
wolves had been moving over from Minnesota, but he was still
very startled to be so close to a wolf! I would imagine wolves
must be even more common in the Ottawa Forest and up into
the Keweenaw. Am I right? (It kind of gives one pause when
thinking of trekking into the woods to see the Sturgeon River
Gorge Falls this summer, don't you think?) Black flies are one
thing; wolves are another!

By Sue, Calumet on Thursday, May 19, 2005 - 05:07 pm:

Black flies and wolves are different, alright. One is very aggressive and bites at every opportunity.

By Jeff K on Thursday, May 19, 2005 - 05:58 pm:

Sue, you hit the nail on the head.

By Beverly, San Jose on Thursday, May 19, 2005 - 08:07 pm:

If the dog is that black thing to the bottom left of the top picture, it looks like a wild turkey to me. :) What kind of dogs are they raising in the Up...Birddogs? :)

By Fran,Ga on Thursday, May 19, 2005 - 08:17 pm:

That is a dog? Sure looks like a big, black bird to me!!

By FLYIN DA MOONEY on Thursday, May 19, 2005 - 08:48 pm:

CHECK DA TONGUE.........

By sur5er on Thursday, May 19, 2005 - 08:50 pm:

Yep, I thought the same thing too, that is was a big black bird in the foreground...although I can make out the doggie in the background.

By Gus LL on Thursday, May 19, 2005 - 09:18 pm:

The Black dog in the left forground is walking towards the camera. At first glance it looks like a big bird, but look again and you will see it is a dog.

Here are closeups of the dogs:

Thanks for the closeups Lori. Now we know for sure
that they are dogs and not a bird. What a great
view for dogs, birds, and humans to enjoy!!
