Happy Earth Day!

Our whole school will be cleaning up the
playground and park where we have recess
every day. Yesterday we read a book about
tree huggers and put on some skits about the
importance of trees in our lives.

This morning, while out for my morning walk, I
heard the call of my first returning White
Throated Sparrow. What a glorious morning.

We are also doing Earth Day activities at my school. It's great for the kids to take some responsibility in caring for our planet.
I hope the beauty of the Keweenaw will be preserved forever.

I find "earth day" a strickly American thing. We have just had some visitors who have lived the last 20 years in Spain. Recently there was a world unity festival in Spain, but America didn't join in. Why should we join people who hate us? Spain had just had several rallies against American policy. (Why can't Americans be like us?) They think we are a bunch of criminals and killers.(Thanks to American movies!) Silly Americans order food to take out! They drink their coffee out of paper cups and drive/walk away! On the plus side, I am glad to be an American. I am glad that we do take the responsibility of a clean environment....but we can only clean up America, the rest of the world will do their thing.

Earth day is every day. Because long after we are gone, the earth will still be here.

It is snowing on the earth of the Copper Country right now. ( Sigh )

Good morning. I kept the windows open last night, when I went to bed. I don't think I slept...but instead went into hibernation, because the temp in the house went down to 55.

It's in the 40's outside and according to the weather report, the snow is coming, tomorrow.

Happy Earth Day everyone :) Think I will have to wait until the ground is a little more defrosted before I plant my Earth Day tree.

To Sandstone princess: Earth Day is not as you say a strictly American thing. If you look up Earth Day on Google, you will fine many sites that talk about the celebration of Earth Day all over the world. We (american's) do not have a corner on the market when it comes to the environment. In fact we could take some lessons from some of our international friends around the world about preserving our earth. We all need to pitch in and do what we can in our corner of the world. Happy Earth day today and every day to all.

Thank you Janice from Maryland! I can add my own observations to yours. After living overseas in both Europe and Asia for the past 35 years, I'm thrilled to now be living in Michigan where I grew up. I can absolutely attest to the fact that people in not all, but many other parts of the world have a far more developed environmental awareness and do more to care for the Earth in their day to day lives than many Americans do. This is true on the governmental level and at the personal, individual level as well. Unfortunately concern for environmental issues has been sometimes labeled as extremism or fanaticism here in the USA. It shouldn't be that way. We all live here now, and want a healthy Earth for our children and grandchildren in the future. So, for a wonderful Michigan and a wonderful world,let's make EVERY day Earth Day!

You are right. Every day is Earth Day.
Wherever you live. It was Earth Day here in
Toronto, Ontario , Canada, where the Mayor
challenged everyone to spend 20 minutes
cleaning up. My school honored that
challenge. True, 20 minutes isn't much, but if
each of us were to give up one
non-environmentally friendly activity or to vow
to pick up trash even for 2 minutes a day, what
kind of difference could we make?

Don't give up hope. I have lived in Spain and
France and for a very long time in Canada.
It's true that lots of people do not like
Americans. Bitterness, jealousy and other
things account for this, some our fault, others
not. Each of us, especially those of us living
abroad, could resolve to behave in ways that
challenge those who want to stereotype
Americans, to re-think their attitudes.

In Canada I am daily regaled by
anti-Americanism. I try not to re-pay it with
anti-Canadianism. I believe in the Power of
One. Keep the Faith!

Kosk...have been meaning to ask...how was your storytelling festival? Who were the tellers? Was it a singleton, a yearly event, or hopefully something more frequent? Story telling can be a great "medium for the message" for Earth Day and other environmental issues...:) Hope you had a great time!

Why should we spend 20 minutes picking up other peoples trash. I learned at an early age not to litter and also that if I made a mess to clean it up myself. If people really want to do their part they should not litter in the first place.
I`ve got better ways to spend 20 minutes.

Good morning! No snow in the Mid-Michigan area yet. I hope this is temporary and gone both here & up there as many will be driving up for graduation and end of school year functions next weekend.

Hi Pasty.com. I'd like to thank Mary Drew who took the time to answer my questions about Copper Harbor in June in such detail. My fiance and I are looking forward to our return as husband and wife on June 4th. We look forward to our vacation and are eager to see the young man who toured us through the Delaware Mine. His father runs the tour and he was assisting last July when we visited. The tour was very interesting ("careful where you step because we had a cave-in last week, and had a couple of bad injuries but no one was killed.......just kidding"). We plan to take the tour again this year and hope we get the same tour guide. If anyone knows him, tell him that his tours are much anticipated and have been the source of some happy conversations here in Metro-Detroit.
