By sur5er on Monday, April 18, 2005 - 07:22 am:

Good morning :) Hubby and I are recouping from a busy weekend of getting all those fun spring chores done. Now, back to the grind of paperwork. Sigh.

By James - Il on Monday, April 18, 2005 - 09:13 am:

Are the smelt running yet, or is it still a little to early for them?

By maijaMI on Monday, April 18, 2005 - 09:14 am:

Margaret, Amarillo TX: I heard ya yesterday about no phone, no email, and no TV. Always wonderful to get back to civilization!

But my second thought was: people should do this in the Keweenaw. When we go to Eagle Harbor, it takes a tiny adjustment to no phone, no email, no Pasty.com, and no TV. But then...the incredible rewards! The family memories! Every second is filled, and we leave the beautiful Keweenaw with regret and longing to return.

Then, we're so glad to be home!

James Il:
The smelt haven't run in years, and nobody really knows why. Cole's creek might get a small run that last two days. I love smelt and have to buy them from commercial fishermen.

There is something to be said for the times when you're on vacation and out of contact. Nobody can call you, but you realize it doesn't really matter. Life goes on regardless, and it might as well go on at a relaxed pace -sometimes!

Enjoying these bug-free days!

Glad to be back to the Copper Country after seven weeks of vacation in Arizona. Had a chance to do lots of hiking etc. So many places to see in this Big country of ours. But as they say----Home is the Best place of all.

Nothing to do with topics discussed so far, but speaking of blasts from the past: does anyone remember the April 15 picture from last year? It was a picture from Paul Trautman of a man in a parka, sitting in a chair in the water, looking through binoculars. It was a welcome source of humor last tax day. I printed that picture, with some of the speculations as to what in the world the guy was doing. I currently have that hard copy posted on my cube, as humor.

Hi Maija, It sounds like your UP retreat is similar to mine. No adjustments on my part with no phone, no computers, no e-mails to answer, no TV or radios, I love it. Don't even have to cook. Just jump in the car and head for the Dreamland Hotel in Bootjack or Lindell's in Lake Lindem. A great way to enjoy nature, examine your goals in life, catch up on a lot of reading, go fishing, take the boat to Houghton and have an ice cream, to have absolutely no plans and do nothing but watch the world go by. Ahhhhhhh!

I meant to say Lake Linden. Sorry!

By Jim - Houghton on Monday, April 18, 2005 - 03:03 pm:

Hello,

A question: While looking at some Keweenaw history items I ran across a reference to a mobile home/trailier called the "Ke Wee Naw" that was made by Keweenaw Industries of Houghton. Early nineteen fifties. Can anyone give me some background on this company and their products? Anybody seen any of these trailers around? Lately?

Guess you could say the C.C. hasn't smelt so good in the last phew years.

Did all the contribution checks for Still Waters get deposited? Just curious, maybe my check didn't make its destination??!!.

Hope the folks at Still Waters are doing good.

Hello to downstate don. It's been awhile.

By downstate don on Monday, April 18, 2005 - 04:29 pm:

Hi Karen; I've been wondering the same about the
donations. Wondered too if it ever amounted to
much. Going to the UP May 27th thru to June 3rd.
For a much needed vacation. Do you plan on going
this year? Hope all is well with you and your
family. Take care.

By kosk in Toronto on Monday, April 18, 2005 - 05:10 pm:

I'm wondering too about the Still Waters
checks. Hope they made it there.

Haven't been around for a while... what's the situation with
Still Waters?

By upmama, MI on Monday, April 18, 2005 - 06:04 pm:

My check to Stillwater's was never cashed, either. I hope it will be put to good use.

After reading the Detroit Freepress article posted in the above link from Yooper in Indiana, I was curious about the quote from one Charles Eshbach, a 62 yr.old U.P. field rep. for the Mich. Nature Assn. I wonder if he is the same Charles (Charlie as we called him) Eshbach that was also was a photographer back in the late 70's, and worked for Mich. Tech. He photographed my wedding pictures in Dec. of 1976, when I was a student at Tech. If I remember right, he also was employed at MTU at least part time. Does anyone know if they are one and the same. My then husband and I went to the same church as Charlie and his family. Glad Tidings Assembly of God in Hancock from 1975 to 1978. Always nice to read about people and places in the CC where I spent 3 great yrs. as a student.

Escape is great. Hoping the folks at Still Waters are doing ok. Have been in my prayers.

To the other night owl ;) who answered my question about where-a-bouts of Hungarian Falls on 4/17, Thanks. Anyone know how it got it's name? Perhaps named after a falls in the homeland of Hungary?

I always enjoy the 8 falls outside of Bessemer too.
