Good Morning to all! Have a great day!!!

By Margaret, Amarillo TX on Saturday, April 9, 2005 - 10:13 am:

Good Morning to everyone. My Altzheimers was slipping in yesterday. I couldn't remember how to degree my 75. Me, I'm 57 years old. And thank you every single happy birthday I got. It was more than I got for the 57 I was in October. Thank you. Your attention to folks who are on the page is very gracious. We may get a little testy about some things, but birthdays, newborns and passings, we do remember. Have a great weekend all.

Looks like everyone is outside enjoying the day, message board is practically empty.

By Barb in Jacobsville on Saturday, April 9, 2005 - 11:31 am:

Hey Margaret,

We're the same age (until May)!

And although I'm on an iMac, when I want the degree sign, I
press shift-option-8 and get °. Don't know if it works like that
on a PC or not (and sometimes when I'm sending an email and
can't remember the series of keys, I just say "50 degrees") :-)

I LOVE this message board and the people who participate (and
even the lurkers ).

Toivo,

Tell Charles and Camilla we said 'Hi'.

By Mary Drew at Pasty Central on Saturday, April 9, 2005 - 11:58 am:

On my PC, I hold down the Alt key-then type 0176 on the number pad (not the keyboard numbers) and voilà, ° (degree sign) appears! :-> You can find many other characters/symbols by checking out your 'Character Map', which on my puter is found by clicking the 'Start button', then scroll up to 'Programs', point to 'Accessories', then 'System Tools', then click on 'Character map'. That's where I learned to make this upside down ? used in this emoticon: °¿°

By sur5er on Saturday, April 9, 2005 - 12:36 pm:

Wow, that is neat about the degree sign...I never knew that. And all these years, I have been typing out the entire word. Hmmm....just tried to do it Barb's way and then Mary's way...no luck...hmmm...back to computer class for me, eh.

Barb, I'm with you...I love this message board...it makes me feel like I am among friends and back home once again. :)

By Stix out West on Saturday, April 9, 2005 - 12:57 pm:

OK, Barb....now I figured out how to find you!! PLEASE give me a Jacobsville update!! Is the Canal and the Bay open?? How about Sandy Beach (OK, the "new" locals may call it "White City Beach", but it will always be Sandy Beach to us old timers!!), could one walk along the shore?? Hope my posting is OK with you regulars!! Sounds like a pretty tight group. Not too long and I'll be heading back!! Thanks for the update.

By Barb in Jacobsville on Saturday, April 9, 2005 - 02:21 pm:

Hi Stix!

I just figured out your handle! The canal is open down here,
but as you drive to Hancock you'll see areas where the canal it
still ice.

Keweenaw Bay has been filled and emptied twice of the ice so
far, and now is empty. Sure is pretty all blue again! The roads
out here are great in the morning (when they are still frozen)
and moderately tolerable the rest of the time. Haven't had
"terrible" roads yet this year (at least to my reckoning). The
Houghton County Road guys are doing a good job by my
estimation! The grading is what has helped! And they ditched a
lot last year, which also helps.

Can't wait til you get back.

Hi Everybody!

I'm going to be spending a few days up there over the summer & need some tips from "those in the know" on where to go and what to see. Although I've spent time in the UP, I've never been to the Keweenaw before. We'll be staying in Copper Harbor. Any advice would be appreciated. Thanks!

Good website. Thanks! Where is the Jampot I've heard so much about?

By julwisc on Saturday, April 9, 2005 - 04:49 pm:

UP dreamer stuck in NJ:
Go back to Pasty Central's home page and click on Jampot at Jacob's Falls. That will give you full information on that wonderful bakery. Don't leave without a muffin!

By Beverly, San Jose on Saturday, April 9, 2005 - 06:20 pm:

Barb in Jacobsville: I would like to ask a question of you...the lower road to Jacobsville (Princess Point) has that road ever be been completed (tarred or cememted or what ever you use) and the upper road starting at the Dreamland Hotel has that ever been completed? I remember driving the lower road not to long ago and it felt like going over a scrub board. A real teeth rattling experience.

By Barb in Jacobsville on Saturday, April 9, 2005 - 08:11 pm:

Beverly in San Jose,

The lower road was paved several years ago. It's paved to just
beyond the left turn where the road heads up to the upper
road. And when it's spring, we usually don't go on that road
because of the mushy clay. It can get bad. But they've been
grading and ditching that road too, along with the "loop"
around Jacobsville, so it isn't as bad as it used to be.

And the upper road is paved to just past the Goninan's, but it
is now in the budget to pave the last 3-1/2 miles, to just past
the Jacobsville Cemetery. But I don't know which year it will be
paved, as the budget is for 5 or 6 years or something. So I'm
not holding my breath, but I'm extremely happy it's in the
budget!

Stix out west, I know who you are. I might have babysat you long time ago. It's always nice to hear from Barb and about the Jake area.

Kosk in Toronto...am in communications/law enforcement with Pinellas county sheriff's office, for about 17 years. Love it. Very educational in its own way. :) Enjoy your storytelling and let us know when you get back who the tellers were. Am looking forward to National Festival in October but won't know tellers until later next month. My partner here at work is retiring the end of September and my gift to her will be a ticket for the weekend and a ride to Jonesborough (and back :)!)
Sur5er, no beach today, just another funfilled day (night) at work. Besides, I'm not a beach person...now give me a rocky/stony rugged Superior shore and I'm there in a heartbeat! The white sands, heat and humidity are not for me...just guilty of going out to feed the gulls now and then....shsh...don't tell anyone!

By sur5er on Sunday, April 10, 2005 - 12:46 am:

Susan,

I hear you...Lake Superior surely beats any ole ocean any day of the year.

So you're the person who feeds those doggone seagulls :) I was sitting out on the beach on Lake Michigan...enjoying the sun, the surf and a really good book. Along came these tourists, and they started feeding the seagulls...it reminded me of a scene out of 'The Birds'. I swear every seagull within a 100 miles was either circling or on the beach.

The city of Monroe Michigan at one time, even had a city ordinance prohibiting people from feeding the seagulls at one of the city parks. Yeah right, like I'm gonna really enforce that one/write a ticket for it.

Wow, you have worked for the sheriff department as long as my husband has for his company. After that anti semi tractor parking fiasco last week, hubby checked to see how much longer he had. If we really push it, we might be able to head back home to da UP in 3 years. :) :) :) :)
