Having trouble waking up on this last Tuesday in April? You could take a cue from Pasty Camists Nate Alwine and Richard Honrath who captured shots of some eye-opening, rip-roaring, U.P. river fun! Nate and friends shot the rapids on the Silver River, five miles east of L'Anse and you can ride along with them in this slideshow. I'm not certain where Richard and company rode the river, but I'm assuming it's Yellow Dog River, in Big Bay, since he has a neat movie clip that takes you right to the river, sound and all. If you don't mind waiting for it to load, it's worth watching 'Mike' maneuver the river. Of course you'll need to have some type of video animation viewing program installed on your computer to view it. Now that should wake you up! :->

Good Morning from Armada, MI. !!!! This is what our local creek looks like since we lost all of that snow we got over the weekend !! Great photo.

So Cooool! It's really fun to see the action of a great Pastycam picture.
Thanks!

Nate: My favorite falls! Can't wait to hear from you today and find out exactly where the action took place. Watched the slideshow, but I'm not familiar with the names.

jAPEi, they all sound like good trips. I see coffee and bun is a recurring theme.

By Nate, MI on Tuesday, April 26, 2005 - 08:39 am:

Hey all,

I wish I was back on that river rather than getting ready for work. The tower in the top picture is a water tower for a camp. The top rapids is named the cabin section because they begin right where a really neat camp is on the shoreline where you see Richard standing. I think the owner of the camp hooks a generator up to a pump and pumps the water tower full of water for whenever he's (or she's) up there.

The second picture is indeed the Yellow Dog river near Big Bay. I'm not sure which falls this is on that stretch, since I was unable to accompany Richard, Rob P, and Rob C on this particular trip. However it looks like they had an awesome time and I'm jealous :)

By nate on Tuesday, April 26, 2005 - 08:47 am:

Allright I think that Richards Picture is either of "The Gullet" or "Lower Dog Leg" rapids. Check out http://www.geocities.com/midwestrivers/MI-Yellow-Dog-Lower.html

Rats ! I was born 65 years too late. I've canoed for 70 years, but never tried a kayak. What a blast ! What fun !!

Great movie clip even if it lasted only seconds wish i
were younger and could be that adventuresome again.
Thanks for sharing.

Great photos but scary to me.

By Phyllis, Wisconsin on Tuesday, April 26, 2005 - 04:28 pm:

How does one stay dry when doing this. Don't you get a little wet?

By Tim, Saint Clair Shores, MI on Tuesday, April 26, 2005 - 06:51 pm:

Now that looks like an absolute thrill. If I can ever master the Eskimo roll, I might try that. It seems more fun than a top-notch roller coaster and safer than bungee jumping with a long cord. Glad to see them wearing helmets.

By Beverly, San Jose on Tuesday, April 26, 2005 - 07:06 pm:

nate: I'm telling you, you guys are No Fear, Thrill Seekers?! Do I understand that before you take a river/rapids you walk the river first, take pictures, study the pics and route before you ride those rapids? I rode the American River out of Sacramento in the Spring during melt-off and it looks like Baby stuff compared to what you are showing us.

By Chuck, IL on Tuesday, April 26, 2005 - 07:15 pm:

The Eskimo Roll is simple....at least the first part! I haven't mastered the second part yet!

By Nate, MI on Tuesday, April 26, 2005 - 09:49 pm:

Phyllis,

We do get very wet, but we wear a combination of dry and wet gear to keep us warm while on the river. Half the fun is getting soaked!

Beverly,

We are very safe thrill seekers. We scout every rapid that we can't see down. We also set up saftey and run the most challenging rapids one at a time. See this picture:
https://pasty.com/pcam/albut19/DCP_1563

In that picture you see Rob Pastel waiting with a throw bag just below a challenging spot in the rapid, and I'm below Rob taking the picture but also ready to assist in a rescue if need be. And sevearl of us have taken Swiftwater Rescue Courses (I'll take my 3rd this year)

Ironically I've been on the American River near Chilibar, CA which is east of Sacramento in the Sierra Nevada Mountains. While it was gorgeous, Upper Michigan has some of the finest rapids in the world, and some of the finest scenery.

Looks fun...but a bit scary. I wonder what the speed is on those water falls.
