With our recent coverage of the melting snow, George Lizenby recalled a couple of old photos in his shoebox which depicted this Spring occurrence 64 years ago. George writes:

The first picture is a flood showing the bridge on Maple street in Tamarack Mills washed out. This was in 1941. The house on the left, where the barn and chickens are, is my home where I grew up. The C&H trestle in the back ground is torn down. The river is the Hungarian. You can see the Hungarian Falls behind the trestle.

The second picture is in Hubbell on M26. The house on the left is the Lanctot home. The man standing on the left is my Uncle Jim Dube.
As a follow-up, George sent this note from Lawrence Smith:
If my memory is correct, it was Saturday, April 12th, 1941. My birthday is April 12th. We also lived on Maple St. in Hubbell, above E Street, which was always called French Gully. There was a walk-through culvert under the Copper Range and C & H tracks for the creek in French Gully, and then it went under the street in clay pipe about 3 feet in diameter. The culvert plugged up with debris from the rapid melting on Saturday. There was actually a lake above the Copper Range track, and someone had a rowboat - maybe Ray Gertz- up there, which was left high and dry when the water receded. So, the head of water above the culvert ruptured the clay pipe and broke up the street. We had to cross it somehow to get to church on Easter Sunday.
If you're planning on a vacation to the Keweenaw this summer, now you'll know a little more about some history downstream of Hungrian Falls.

Have a good week :o)

Hey ! Thats my picture !! Had a great hike up the hills to the Hungarian Falls site... The winds were howling at 40-50mph this day and we couldnt make the trip out to Isle Royale so we did a tour of local shoreslines, waterfals, lighthouses and beaches led by our MTU prof.

Jeff Kalember provided the Pasty Cam shot of the day on June 16, 2004, and a nice virtual tour of some other U.P. sights in his Guest Gallery album

That Delivery/Feed/Stable looks like it is buldging at the seams. Either that or my eyes are crossed being so early in the morning.

I think the notes from George and Lawrence are talking about two different areas..One is in Tamarack City and French Gully was in Hubbell. Both towns were flooded on the same day.

Spring of 69 in Hurontown, we had so much water I still have pics of my toot buddies and I in a tin wash basin with an oar and the yard totally flooded. Wish I could remember which house, as I drove past last summer, but alas memory is faded and somebody fixed up the joint a toot bought for 1000 bucks back in 68 for a flop. Man it was that.....

FLYINTHEMOONEY-and that's the rest of the story...

Hey Dad, Great pictures of the flood. I love to hear you talk about the days of your childhood and all the memories you have of a time much slower then today. A time when skipping stones and exploring were high on the list of things to do, when having so little seemed like so much, when children actually listened to their elders with wide eyes and wonder, when the smell of moms fresh homemade bread or apple pie lingered in the halls. Moms were always home. It was a time of innocence, hard work, and laughter. I love to hear you tell of those times, they are long past now, but not forgotten.

Janette-wonderful, I couldn't agree with you more on the respect of elders & the way it used to be.

Fran, GA:
I remember the fields around our farm flooding in the spring. At times, my parents were worried it would reach the farm house but it never did...thank goodness.

By Larry L., WI on Monday, April 18, 2005 - 03:45 pm:

That "Lanctot" home was my Gramma's house!

My Dad (Lawrence) and my Aunts and Uncles always talked about the "big flood". Now I finally get to see it. Very cool.

My Dad always talks about the "old" barn that sat beside. I remember a building in that spot, but it wasn't the one in the picture.

I'll be printing these pics out and mailing them home. (Mom and Dad just refuse to give in to the internet craze....)

Thanks!

Thanks George for the picture. We are now living in your family home. We don't have any chickens in the back yard though. We also have a copy of your cd of Tamarack & Hubbell area. I have been sharing it with the Tamarack gang.
Thanks again!

By Fran,Ga on Sunday, April 24, 2005 - 04:21 pm:

Does anyone know where the Beilman's lived in Hubbell? I remember we used to go up this road to their house. They lived at the very top of the hill and the house was surrounded on 3 sides by steep ravines. It was on the left somewhere on the side closest to LL( coming from $ Bay)
