Mt. Bohemia has some treacherous ski runs and is categorized as a hill for the advanced skier, meaning there are no bunny hills I would think! David Antikainen snapped a shot showing us the face of the hill, named Bohemia Bluffs. Being located in the higher elevation area of the Keweenaw, this resort receives its snowfall earlier and gets a pretty good base of natural snow keeping it open right up to the finale of the winter season. With the warmer temps we've been having the past few days, I'm betting even the solid base deposited there has taken a bit of a beating, but the view of and from this hill is beautiful no matter what the season, so never fear, the loss of the snow just brings on a different color of beauty with the changing of the seasons! I know the ski hill runs the chair lift for fall color viewing, but I'm thinking it would be a nice way to get to the top to check out the area year round!

Happy April Fool's Day!

Mary, the new home of Elmo's Tower is almost as subtle as last year's gravity attack on April 1st at the Gay Smokestack.

Ooops
Seems like that was also a David Antikainen special. Seriously, I must say that David's (original) photos appear most often on my own personal computer as the WOW background. I'm still enjoying his masterpiece which was picked as the first WOW of 2005. Today's shot has my nomination to begin our second quarter of WOW's (...minus the April Fool's construction on top, of course :0)

Our special thanks to all 13 Guest Gallery photographers who provided our first quarter of WOW's. I think it's the first time we have had a different individual for each week in any quarter. There's a lot of beauty and talent out there in pasty-land!

I took the chair lift for fall color viewing a couple years ago & it was beautiful! Happy April Fool's Day & have a great weekend everyone!

What a fine group of photos. Whether it's an April fool or not, the first visit here every day makes the rest of it (rotten or not)more enjoyable. There are times in the day I return, just to remember there is a better look at reality than what I'm getting in the classroom.

Hey, keep Elmo's tower in the photo! It's April Fool's Day! Would make a great April shot for next year's calendar.

By FLYIN on Friday, April 1, 2005 - 08:33 am:

Stack at Gay was always a great water reference when fishing....I have stood in the bottom many times and looked up the stack...not today tho...stuck in troll land for a little longer...

By Roudy Mi on Friday, April 1, 2005 - 09:05 am:

Hey FLYIN. Ever looked DOWN the stack from above?

As we said goodbye yesterday to those who left us for a greater place, let us welcome those who've arrived.

Greetings Keaghan, grandchild of the heart!

Good morning all ! While out on my chilly, but sunny, morning walk today, robins were merrily singing here and there, and two honking geese flew over Laurium , announcing their arrival for another season. Have a great day everyone!

April Fool's or not? The NHL Lockout is over??

By J.S. IL on Friday, April 1, 2005 - 11:09 am:

IS THAT THE SMOKE STACK THAT YOU CAN SEE ACROSS THE LAKE FROM THE DREAMLAND DOCK.

By ed/mi on Friday, April 1, 2005 - 11:24 am:

My brother in Pasadena, Ca tells me there is a good article about NCAA basketball courts and HORNER FLOORING MILL of Dollar Bay on the front page of the Wall Street Journal today. I will look at it later in the library as i am not a suscriber online to their paper.

By jon,mn on Friday, April 1, 2005 - 11:27 am:

The stack Across from the Dreamland dock would be the old ATLAS POWDER CO. @ Senter. Mich outside of Dollar Bay

Folks,

I found this site a short time ago, I spent 4 weeks a summer every year for 25 years in the UP and miss it still. Nice to read of Fred and June Rydholm. Great UPers!

Best regards, Bob

Is the fire tower to spot skiers that have caught ablaze?

By Uncle John on Friday, April 1, 2005 - 12:13 pm:

Bob, it's not too late to plan a summer vacation.

By Karl from Cadillac on Friday, April 1, 2005 - 03:47 pm:

At one time, when I lived in Ontonagon, we would say the UP was 9 months of winter, 3 months of poor sledding....

By ed/mi on Friday, April 1, 2005 - 06:14 pm:

Bob I have read hundreds of books on Michigan and by far the best one to date is by Fred Rydholm covering the history of Marquette County. We need that good a book on the other 82 counties.

First freighter in Eagle Harbor???? Now that would have made a great 4/1 joke!

By copper country resident on Friday, April 1, 2005 - 08:57 pm:

Boy! That ship is rather close to shore, wouldn't
you all agree? OR is this picture not real???

By copper country resident on Friday, April 1, 2005 - 09:31 pm:

ha, ha, Happy April Fools Day!

By downstate don on Friday, April 1, 2005 - 09:42 pm:

Hope they can get that freighter out of the mud.
What a April Fools Day joke that is. Have a good
weekend everyone.

Looks like the Wilfred Sykes doesn't it Ken??

By Ken and Mimi from da UP on Friday, April 1, 2005 - 11:20 pm:

You're right, Bob, that is the Sykes. I sure got a laugh from that one. Cute pic, but I think she would've run aground before she got that far. ROFL.

she shoulda used the range markers, and been a prominent
display for some time when she hung up on the entrance rocks.
Please someone tell me what they know for sure about this
purely hypothetical problem, of course.

thanx

I spent many summers at my Grandpa's house in Ontonagon - I always loved the UP. I am from downstate - Plymouth, MI and now teach 4th grade in AZ. I understand what you are feeling when you wrote the above. The pictures are fantastic - I am in love with the UP all over again.
