Can you find the misspelling of a County?

By Grace M Wetton (Gmw) on Sunday, December 4, 2011 - 08:56 am:

Good Morning everyone. Snowy and 30 degrees here in Houghton. Have a great day!

By Janie T. (Bobbysgirl) on Sunday, December 4, 2011 - 09:10 am:

On snowmobile trails, I have seen it spelled Hotown.

By Shirley Waggoner (Shirlohio) on Sunday, December 4, 2011 - 09:25 am:

Congratulations, Alex! Janie T., don't think I'da told that.;}

By Janie T. (Bobbysgirl) on Sunday, December 4, 2011 - 09:32 am:

Snowmobile signs have just so much room...shorthand is used when necessary.............

By Marianne Y (Marianne) on Sunday, December 4, 2011 - 09:57 am:

Good Morning you all! Now it's time to start wondering if we will have a white Christmas here in mid-Michigan? Temperatures in the 40's, coupled with rain this weekend managed to get wipe out of most of our 6-plus inches of snow from this past week. The temperatures here will be back in the 30's and below this coming week, but no real snow is forecast.

Janie and Shirley, maybe I shouldn't say this, but more than a few college students who go to college UP there lovingly refer to it as "Hotown", for what it's worth. :-) That being said, to many, Gladstone is known to many as "Happy Rock". That came from local kids who went to high school near there, before college. These are just good kids being kids. (Honestly, the first time I heard Happy Rock, it took me a minute to figure out what/where that was.)

By Shirley Waggoner (Shirlohio) on Sunday, December 4, 2011 - 10:01 am:

I understand the limited space, Janie, but why not just spell it "Hoton", and leave off the 'w'. Maybe I've been mispronouncing it all these years??

By Shirley Waggoner (Shirlohio) on Sunday, December 4, 2011 - 10:07 am:

I guess I see what you two, Janie and Marianne, are saying....sort of like the abbreviated version of Elizabethtown, KY, is "E-town".

By Thomas Baird (Thomas) on Sunday, December 4, 2011 - 10:25 am:

Nice pics.

By Janie T. (Bobbysgirl) on Sunday, December 4, 2011 - 10:31 am:

I have no idea Shirley. I didn't print those signs up. I just follow their directions which are 100% accurate. Maybe something similar to as I live in See Der Rabbits, Iowa?

By FJL (Langoman) on Sunday, December 4, 2011 - 10:51 am:

It's all roses for the Badgers. Congrats to them.

By Deb S. (Usedtobeayooper) on Sunday, December 4, 2011 - 11:14 am:

I don't know what it is about Robert's pictures, but they just grab me all the time. I just love them!!

And then of course the Welcome to Houghton has always been one of my favorites. It was always so pretty at Christmas time.

Have a great Sunday. We're off to see the TSO concert! Should be great!

By Janie T. (Bobbysgirl) on Sunday, December 4, 2011 - 11:55 am:

Deb, I just posted on facebook some of our snowmobile pictures in the U.P.. There is a couple with the lift bridge.

By Shirley Waggoner (Shirlohio) on Sunday, December 4, 2011 - 12:41 pm:

"See Der Rabbits, Iowa"? ...lol, now that's funny!;D

By Alex "UP-Goldwinger" (Alex) on Sunday, December 4, 2011 - 03:41 pm:

Very good JT and I see-der-point.

By Janie T. (Bobbysgirl) on Sunday, December 4, 2011 - 03:52 pm:

See Der Rabbits, Iowa has been long time humor dating back to 1901, possibly even longer ago than that. It was a attraction gimmick, for carnival advertisement. I can't take the credit to be honest....lol!

By Hollidays (Hollybranches) on Sunday, December 4, 2011 - 04:12 pm:

What a sad Bears game. That team sure is hit and miss, mostly miss. KC won by a freak touchdown. Bet Urlacher was mad.

Watching Green Bay now, hope they beat the New York Giants.

Cold weather headed our way.

Hope you all gave to your food pantry during the "Canathon".

Congrats to the Badgers!

By Daveofmohawk (Daveofmohawk) on Sunday, December 4, 2011 - 08:50 pm:

What a thriller between the Packers and Giants, 38-35 Packers, they are now 12-0 and have won 18 consecutive games, go PACK!

By Ken ja Mimi from da UP (Kenjamimi) on Sunday, December 4, 2011 - 10:47 pm:

Have seen Houghton spelled Hoton on different maps. Sort of a short hand thing I spose. Never saw it with a 'w'.

By Janie T. (Bobbysgirl) on Monday, December 5, 2011 - 07:12 am:

The spelling hubby and I saw was on a snowmobile direction/mileage sign on a trail near Calumet. We figured it was the work from one of Houghton's sports team opponent.

By Diane Miller Wallace (Sage) on Monday, December 5, 2011 - 05:13 pm:

My husband and I have decided to avoid snow for the rest of our lives. We have bought an RV and are currently in a park in Arkansas, moving down to Texas soon. I love the UP, but I personally have had enough snow to last several lifetimes.

On another weird note, I have found the first Yooper. I was doing a lot of research into the Wizard of Oz books written by L Frank Baum. (yes, there was more than one book). My mother read them to me when I was growing up. In the book, "The Tin Woodman of Oz," there is a giantess named Mrs. Yoop. Published in 1918, long before Dan Rosandich coined the word Yoopers. You can read more about it at L.Frank Baum's Last Five Oz Books.
