When traveling along M-26, between Dollar Bay and Tamarack City, you drive through the little town of Mason. Don't blink or you might just miss it and you wouldn't want to do that, as you'd miss the items in the photos today, from Steve Brimm. He told me that he hadn't driven along M-26 in quite awhile and had forgotten about all the neat old buildings and things to photograph along the way. Sure glad he took that route, as it's nice to see all the old time gasoline pumps, cans and even a vintage parking meter on the left there. Steve liked the old Ford decorated with artificial tree branches, showing some holiday spirit, despite the rusty appearance of her body, too. More treasures found along the highways and byways of the Copper Country.

I wonder how long it will take before some "antique pickers" will show up in Mason...

I love seeing the telephone booths along the way going thru Mason area. Sometimes I think they are moved to different areas along the way. There is one phonebooth that is lit up.

All quiet on the northern front? Where is everyone today?

By JAD, Orgnst (Jandalq) on Thursday, December 29, 2011 - 10:26 am:

Mason is unique. "Yars ago" every house was white, but with different colored shutters. Now that they are being lovingly restored, I wish the white had been kept--along with the different colored shutters. That added to the "uniqueness." But I still take visitors to the area as an example of a "company settlement."

Hmmm... For a minute there I thought Steve Brimm had visited Appalachia. Some would say that's the only place you'd find 'stuff' like that.

By stix (Stixoutwest) on Thursday, December 29, 2011 - 10:54 am:

Good to see Steve is still up there snapping pictures. He does have
an "eye" for catching the interesting and fabulous!

By Nick Karjala (Nmkarjala) on Thursday, December 29, 2011 - 11:11 am:

Shirley, you can see a lot of "stuff" like that in the Appalachian foothills of southeastern Ohio where I used to spend a lot of time at my campsite (in Pike County). I imagine you are familiar with that area.

By Cheryl Rozman (Cotton) on Thursday, December 29, 2011 - 11:12 am:

I too remember seeing those homes all white. Weren't they owned by Quincy Mines? They looked really nice then. For awhile they looked pretty bad after Quincy sold them. Glad to see people doing things with them now.

By Shirley Waggoner (Shirlohio) on Thursday, December 29, 2011 - 11:27 am:

Never been to the area you speak of, Nick, but I do know that those types of areas exist all over....even in upstate New York and some outlying areas of Los Angeles, just to name a couple. So yeah, they can be found all over. BTW, I'm originally from Tenn.;)

Reminds me of the "Rusty Chevrolet" song--a Christmas favorite I hear occasionally here in Cincinnati--except it's a Ford.

By Thomas Baird (Thomas) on Thursday, December 29, 2011 - 03:20 pm:

Thanks 4 sharing these bits of history.

By Al Harjala (Alsocal) on Thursday, December 29, 2011 - 04:26 pm:

That decorated Ford is indeed a "rusty Chevrolet"

By Donna (Donna) on Thursday, December 29, 2011 - 04:26 pm:

Cool pics...and it is nice to see Mason getting redone...original or not...it's looking MUCH nicer than it has for a long time!

By Janie T. (Bobbysgirl) on Thursday, December 29, 2011 - 06:15 pm:

The Rusty Chevrolet, I have been watching youtube, all the Da Yoopers videos. Those Da Yoopers are fun guys!

By Deb S. (Usedtobeayooper) on Thursday, December 29, 2011 - 06:47 pm:

One of my UP friends just said yesterday that she did NOT want to hear the Rusty Old Chevrolet song one more time, lol!!

By Mike Schneider (Upmike) on Thursday, December 29, 2011 - 07:09 pm:

Ok is it just me or does that pine tree look like its driving? Maybe hanging his head out the window because there to much snow on the hood...and his arm hanging out the door handle?

By Shirley Waggoner (Shirlohio) on Thursday, December 29, 2011 - 07:29 pm:

Just take an aspirin, 'Upmike', you'll feel better in the morning.;D

By Eddyfitz (Eddyfitz) on Thursday, December 29, 2011 - 08:53 pm:

Yes Cheryl they were owned by the Quincy Mining company. As a little guy I helped unload a boxcar full of 5 gallons cans of white paint to be used on those homes.

By Michael Du Long (Mikie) on Thursday, December 29, 2011 - 11:30 pm:

Cheryl, my dad was born in Mason. The second house on the water side coming from $ Bay. Eddy Fitz, I remember sledding on LaRue's hill with some of your family back in the day. You had mentioned sledding in Hubbell the other day. I want to take my grandkids home when there is a lot of snow. So how about getting Heike to do his snow dance soon.

By Mike Schneider (Upmike) on Friday, December 30, 2011 - 05:39 am:

Thanks Shirley! Much better :) lol

By Sdcferndale (Sdcferndale) on Friday, December 30, 2011 - 12:21 pm:

Our family farm is along that same route, sits far
back from the road between Dollar Bay and Mason.
Since the farm has been sold many many years ago, I
was shocked to see houses built on the old
homestead land when I last visted 20 years ago.
