If you've set up a bird feeding station anywhere UP North here, then you've most likely seen a nuthatch coming and going from it. This one captured by Brenda Leigh, seems to be taking a break between visits to the feeder, sitting on the branch amidst accumulated snow. These little birds are quite the agile visitors at the bird feeders, often times turning sideways and upside down as they feast on whatever you have to offer. In case you're wondering how these little birds got their name, it's because they have the habit of jamming large nuts and acorns into tree bark, then whacking them with their sharp bill to “hatch” out the seed from the inside. Sure seems like a lot of work for such a small bird

Mary, as per your last sentence.....maybe it's God's way of telling us humans something like: 'Hard work never hurt anybody.' It also keeps 'em in good shape. The nuthatch is one of my favorite small birds....they're so cute the way they descend a tree trunk, upside down.:>

Must be an awful tasty nut to go through all that to get to it....
Shirley, it's the only bird that descends down a tree face down. Love those birds. Love the sound they make.

I agree, Hollidays, and their markings are so unique....looks like they have a delicate 'racing stripe' on their heads. Sweet birds!

They are one of my favorite birds to watch. I just love them. Love the way they walk up and down the trees.
