Mary Drew at Pasty Central (Mdrew) on Friday, December 9, 2011 - 07:56 am:

With winter white coming down upon us here in the Keweenaw, Steve Brimm decided to make one last trip UP Brockway Mountain in Copper Harbor. Soon, snow accumulations will make it a trip to be had by snowmobile, snowshoe or skiing only.

Back to Steve's photos... he sure captured some wintry beauty on his way UP and on the way back down, too. His first stop on his trek to the top, was at the lookout over Copper Harbor. Fun to see this scene from the winter perspective. Then he continues on his way, finding tire tracks, right beside coyote tracks. Next is a snowball tree... I wonder if Steve picked a few after he was done snapping the shot. Steve's final photo, shows the remainder of the way to the top, with winter white clinging to all the rocks and ledges.

I don't care what time of year you travel the route, there's always something beautiful to find along the way. Thanks for taking us with you today, Steve.

We have a picture of Copper Harbor almost like that one. Only it was taken on a warm summer day! Either way, it's an awesome view!

By Janie T. (Bobbysgirl) on Friday, December 9, 2011 - 08:05 am:

I have pictures #2, #3, and #4 in my snowmobile vacations.

By Marsha, Genesee/Aura (Marsha) on Friday, December 9, 2011 - 08:08 am:

My favorite is the coyote tracks. I think everyone probably has the Copper Harbor picture, several times!

By Alex "UP-Goldwinger" (Alex) on Friday, December 9, 2011 - 08:10 am:

Nice pics! Do they close the drive to vehicles during the winter?
By the way, Brockway is on Google Maps - Street View, which surprised me that Google would go all the way UP there.

By Janie T. (Bobbysgirl) on Friday, December 9, 2011 - 08:14 am:

I meant to say those pictures are in my snowmobile vacations photo albums.

By Donna (Donna) on Friday, December 9, 2011 - 09:17 am:

Alex..they don't plow Brockway in the winter....It's fun to break trail in the Spring! LOL....I had a Volkswagon way back when...if you got stuck, the carload would pick it up and move it. Great times on that mountain...in every season.

Snowmobiling on a full moon to the top of Brockway...ain't nothing like the beauty of that ride!

By Norma in Midland (Normainmidland) on Friday, December 9, 2011 - 09:27 am:

Awesome awesome pictures!! I love Brockway in snow or on a warm sunny day! You always can find something interesting on your way up or down to look at!

By Richard L. Barclay (Notroll) on Friday, December 9, 2011 - 09:34 am:

Mary, don't forget the dog sledders going over the mountain at least twice each year!

By Marianne Y (Marianne) on Friday, December 9, 2011 - 09:35 am:

Nice photos, Steve B., thank you! Alex, I could not believe it myself, but a Tech student got permission to upload many of the sidewalks on the Tech campus, onto Google Maps! That kid must have a little too much time on his hands, perhaps? And I didn't know that Google Maps had sidewalks on it, until my youngest son showed those to me.

I'm not a 'fan' of snow (since I got old) but these photos are fantastic! Marsha, I like the one of the coyote tracks, too.....wonder if there were 2 or those are going 'n coming tracks. Mary, what a shame 'blooms' from snowball trees can't be gathered and put in a vase. :D Thanks, Steve, for sharing the beauty!

By Shirley Waggoner (Shirlohio) on Friday, December 9, 2011 - 11:25 am:

Just looked at Sharon's cam....today Copper Harbor looks nothing like Steve's pretty clear pic above. brrrrr

By Karen Benton (Nerakthenice178) on Friday, December 9, 2011 - 11:46 am:

It's (finally!!!) beginning to look a lot like Christmas. I wish I was already retired to CH so I can at last enjoy Brockway in the winter. Oh, well. Still a LowPer for now. Thanks, Steve, for the vicarious thrills and chills for today!

By Janie T. (Bobbysgirl) on Friday, December 9, 2011 - 01:22 pm:

Donna, I know that snowmobile ride!

By Uncle Chuck (Unclechuck) on Friday, December 9, 2011 - 02:17 pm:

By Thomas Baird (Thomas) on Friday, December 9, 2011 - 02:33 pm:

Pretty Winter photos.

By kosk in Toronto (Koskintoronto) on Friday, December 9, 2011 - 02:54 pm:

Karen-- Wow! I never heard of a LowPer before. Did you just make

By Capt. Paul (Eclogite) on Friday, December 9, 2011 - 03:03 pm:

By Alex "UP-Goldwinger" (Alex) on Friday, December 9, 2011 - 04:44 pm:

Great pictures. Brockway mtn. is one of the most beautiful and
breathtaking spots in Michigan. While visiting it this fall we learned
that it is in danger of being sold and possibly split into smaller
private parcils. The Nature Conservancy and several other
organizations are soliciting donations in an effort to buy it and
preserve it for the public. I would hate to see it be closed to the
public.

By Shirley Waggoner (Shirlohio) on Saturday, December 10, 2011 - 10:03 am:

Late, but......Have to comment on those road signs...STEEP HILL UP....STEEP HILL DOWN. My question: Does the hwy. dpt. think people are really that stupid and can't tell the difference? ;]

By Bob Tiura (Bobtiura) on Saturday, December 10, 2011 - 10:37 am:

I took my fiance, her brother and and his wife up this drive in November of 1967 in my 1965 Beetle. There was 5" of new snow and no tracks except mine! It was the first time up for the others, but probably my 50th. By the way, the steep hill signs are especially important in fog or snow!

By Shirley Waggoner (Shirlohio) on Saturday, December 10, 2011 - 11:15 am:

Thank you, Bob. You're right and I do stand corrected.:)

By Gary W. Long (Gary_in_co) on Saturday, December 10, 2011 - 11:23 am:

No, Shirley, you were right the first time. People should be driving slow enough to gauge the lay of the road no matter if it’s foggy, snowy, or not.

By Shirley Waggoner (Shirlohio) on Saturday, December 10, 2011 - 01:52 pm:

Thank you, Gary, now I feel vindicated.;) Guess in your line of business you've unfortunately seen a lot of drivers who didn't follow that 'advice'!

By ILMHitCC (Ilmhitcc) on Saturday, December 10, 2011 - 02:56 pm:

I've taken this road more times than I can count, on
foot, bike, snowmobile and car/truck, and those
signs belong right where they are. Just as with most
of the beautiful, winding, wooded roads in the
Keweenaw, you cannot see such hills or curves until
you're on them, which is too late to react. The sign
warnings are more than appropriate so you know
what's ahead and can plan accordingly. Thank you
Keweenaw County Road Commission.

By Gary W. Long (Gary_in_co) on Saturday, December 10, 2011 - 06:03 pm:

If you cannot see hills or curves until it is too late to react, either:

A: You are driving too fast for conditions, or
B: You should not be behind the wheel of a motor vehicle, or
C: Both.

Relying on signs instead of accepting personal accountability for your own driving behavior is being irresponsible to yourself and all the other drivers on the road. Big Brother cannot be at every bend in the road to take care of you.
