Barb Bouwkamp was driving in the Ontonagon area on one of our recent snowy days and spotted these lonely looking hay bales out in the field getting covered. Hopefully they're wrapped well and will be preserved until springtime. Then when the snow melts and the horses or cattle are in need of feed, they’ll be all set. I'm sure in the meantime, they make nice homes for field mice and critters.

Nice to hear the field mice are safe, lolol!!!

Nice snowy pictures!

Frosted Mini-Wheats!

By Janie T. (Bobbysgirl) on Tuesday, November 22, 2011 - 08:18 am:

Always loved doing the hay days on the farm!!The only wrap for these are either baling twine or a mesh wrap to hold these together. The outer part of the bale will wether and form a crust to protect the inner layers. Big bales come in 2 sizes, large the size dad and I made, 1800-2000 lbs or a smaller one 1100lbs.

By Janie T. (Bobbysgirl) on Tuesday, November 22, 2011 - 08:23 am:

I bet they will be fed this winter when pastures are buried in snow. There were times dad and I baled up snakes, rabbits, one year a couple feral cats. You snooze, ya lose! My horses never ate these, dad made the small 55 lbs bales for them.

Great shots Barb.

Alex, I love Frosted Mini Wheats. I wish there were a "LIKE" button on pasty.com for the great comments that come in.

By Shirley Waggoner (Shirlohio) on Tuesday, November 22, 2011 - 08:59 am:

Great minds work together,(sorta) every time I see bales like that in a field, I'm reminded of Shredded Wheat (big 'uns), which I loved as a kid.:> Shows how old I am. (Alex, you forgot "frosted");)

By Shirley Waggoner (Shirlohio) on Tuesday, November 22, 2011 - 09:01 am:

oops.....just checked, Alex, sorry 'bout that....told ya I'm old ;(

Brenda...I was gonna click the LIKE button on your comment....lolol....

And Janie..thanks for the explanation....I didn't realize those round bales would crust and protect the innerds.....the little ones will mold right through, correct?

By Bob Williams (Wabbit) on Tuesday, November 22, 2011 - 11:07 am:

A lot of times I see these bales in a row covered with wrap.

Alex, those are Paul Bunyon sized frosted mini wheats.

By Helen in the U. P.! (Lahelo) on Tuesday, November 22, 2011 - 02:15 pm:

Those fields are just down the road from me! Was wondering if they were going to pick them up before winter even started. Winter supply for all of the cattle they have on the farm.
Everyone have a Happy Thanksgiving on Thursday!

By Richard Wieber (Dickingrayling) on Tuesday, November 22, 2011 - 02:18 pm:

An old friend enjoyed tell a story about these big round bales. At the coffee get-together he would turn to me (his favorite straight man) and say "did you hear that those big round bales have been outlawed?" And of course I was obligated to ask why and he would answer "because the animals can't get a square meal". We would all laugh even though we had heard it a dozen times. That's what friends are for. RIP, Sandy

By Thomas Baird (Thomas) on Tuesday, November 22, 2011 - 03:05 pm:

Better get those hay rolls in the barn, quick!

By Michael Du Long (Mikie) on Tuesday, November 22, 2011 - 03:30 pm:

Richard, that is what old friend are for. To keep in our hearts when they pass. My pal Keith Egan would always say my Jeep wouldn't pull a greased string out of a cats, you fill it in. Miss that guy. He was like a father to me. The holidays are not the same when all your comrades are gone. Time to make new ones I guess. I need some who can still do things, like tarp the motor home. When they reach seventy they tend to not climb ladders.

By Shirley Waggoner (Shirlohio) on Tuesday, November 22, 2011 - 03:46 pm:

Dick and Mikie, you're right, it's hard when friends are no longer with us. This year for the first time in my 76 years I will not be involved in the holidays.....too painful after losing my best friend, my husband, in May of this year. The joy's not there. That's why I spend so much time on PastyCam....I learn so much about all you fine folks, and it helps ease the pain.

By Janie T. (Bobbysgirl) on Tuesday, November 22, 2011 - 04:53 pm:

Shirley, you can count on Pasty Cam to have a lot of *pasty* friends, and you can count on me being your friend here and in Spirit and Thought!

By Shirley Waggoner (Shirlohio) on Tuesday, November 22, 2011 - 05:15 pm:

Thank you, Janie T, that's very kind and sweet. And yes, I feel I'm in a 'warm' spot surrounded by a whole lot of 'friends'....even tho we've never met and are miles apart.:)

By Alex "UP-Goldwinger" (Alex) on Tuesday, November 22, 2011 - 06:29 pm:

One thing left that makes me smile,
friendship shared that's undefiled.

By Michael Du Long (Mikie) on Tuesday, November 22, 2011 - 07:17 pm:

Shirley, feel free to email and use my shoulder. I would be broken hearted if something happened to Precious.

By Shirley Waggoner (Shirlohio) on Tuesday, November 22, 2011 - 07:52 pm:

God bless you, Mikie!

By Deb S. (Usedtobeayooper) on Tuesday, November 22, 2011 - 07:57 pm:

Shirley, feel free to contact me any time you need somebody too. My e-mail is listed here. It's so hard to lose those we love. I'm so sorry for your loss. But he is with you in spirit and would want you to be happy. So I'm glad you found all of us to help to make you happy.
And Mikie, you are such a softie. Love ya!

By Richard Wieber (Dickingrayling) on Tuesday, November 22, 2011 - 10:00 pm:

Shirley-----I lost my wife 11 years ago and I still miss her. The difference is now I forget about my hurt and enjoy the memories. God must want us to go on with our lives or He would have taken us, too. Now I have 11 years of news to tell her when next we meet.

What a beautiful thing to say, Richard. Blessings on both you and
Shirley.

Shirley I lost my husband in 2009. Just this week I realized I could look at his picture without crying. Now I just remember the good times. God will heal your heart, if you let Him, I promise. Our family will say a prayer for you today as we pray and give thanks during our Thanksgiving meal.
