John Schneiderhan (one of our Pasty.NET staff members), recently had a chance to go up in the air to snap a few photos. I'm guessing he was flying along with his brother Ed, who we featured back in September, 2010, when he took his first solo flight. They flew out toward Lac La Belle, snapping the first shot, in which you can see the old Radar Base atop Mount Horace Greeley (on the right) and Mount Bohemia (on the left), then out the Lac La Bell channel to Lake Superior. John's second photo is a closer shot of the buildings that remain from the Radar Base/Keweenaw Acadamy days, like a ghost town of sorts now. Then his last photo is a scenic capture of Mount Bohemia, mirrored in the lake below.

We really are lucky to have beautiful scenery like this surrounding us and even luckier that folks like John and many other photographers, share their photos with us all to enjoy what we might otherwise not get to see in person. A big thanks to all of you!

In the first photo there seems to be a road going straight past the radar base to Lac La Belle. Or is that a power line? About where it ends at the lake is where my wife's family had a cottage. At that time it was the only one on the west side of the lake. Wonderful area.

Very pretty scenes this morning, John and Mary, thanks! Mary, I agree, you certainly are lucky (blessed) to be living UP there. I think I somehow knew that feeling the short time we lived in Charlevoix. Wasn't the UP, but close enough! There are 3 places we lived over the years that left me with that feeling of "state of mind"....Michigan, Wyoming and California. Wonderful memories, all!

He was flying in Ed's home built Kitfox. He just finished building it last summer. Ed took me up last week. He even let me fly it. It is a nice little plane made for backcountry flying.

E. Neil Harri, don't know how you pilots do it. Have a neighbor across the road, he and his wife are close to 80 years old. They fly all of the time. That is SISU. Hats off to you. Got a nose bleed just going up Brockway Mountain. :)

I suppose if I were a pilot I'd feel much differently, but those home-made airplane kits scare me just thinking about 'em. I'd feel I was flying with "Eddie Rickety-back" from Lil' Abner fame.;) (no offense intended, Mr. Harri) Wasn't the plane that went down with John Denver a homemade job? Hopefully my flying days are over...put in lots of air-miles over 20 years, but not in the 'driver's seat'.

There are a lot of pilots 75+ young. We have a friend whose mother flew Rural Electric Coop. executives all over for meetings until she *retired* at 80. Another friend of ours is a retired United Airline pilot. There are a lot of Viet Nam vets that are pilots of their own planes. No big deal, you're as young as you feel!

I was always very agile and very active up into my sixties, Janie T., but then arthritis stepped in...so now I'm as old as I feel.:}

Shirley, I have my share of arthritis, 2 lower back surgeries within 6 years of each other due to 6 in total ruptured/shattered disks and sciatic nerve damage in both legs. I qualify for a handicap parking space permit, I told them to give it to someone who really needs it.. I keep going because either I'm stupid or I go by mind over matter. lol!

Atta girl, Janie!! I was still mowing with my lawn tractor 'til July 2010....then the second hip went, so now I need 2 canes, and a lawn care service.:|

Look at it this way Shirley, you're keeping a lawn care company and it's employers in business! ha!

Well yeah, I guess you could look at it that way, Janie, however there's only 1 guy at $75 per week!! OUCH

Yes, the plane John Denver died piloting was a kit plane. It was an experimental aircraft that had been built by someone else, and John had just purchased it the day before. As I recall, the most likely cause of the accident was that he ran out of fuel in the main fuel tank. The builder had placed the switch to activate the auxiliary tanks in a non-standard location on the bulkhead behind the pilot, and the theory is that John lost control and crashed as he was twisting around to find that switch.
