Yes, the plane John Denver died piloting was a kit plane. It was an experimental aircraft that had been built by someone else, and John had just purchased it the day before. As I recall, the most likely cause of the accident was that he ran out of fuel in the main fuel tank. The builder had placed the switch to activate the auxiliary tanks in a non-standard location on the bulkhead behind the pilot, and the theory is that John lost control and crashed as he was twisting around to find that switch.
