The unbridled force of nature had pounded the Great Lakes for several days. In the 'morning after' edition on 11/13/1913, the Detroit News recounted the destruction, listing by vessel the lives lost on 4 of the 5 Lakes. In little more than a month, the U.P. would see another tragedy - Italian Hall - an event that overshadowed the "Big Blow" that just recently had been so devastating. Hear the story in the November 13 Day in History.

The scene is quite different as I look out over Superior this morning here at Eagle River. Peaceful. We've had lots of comments on our Lake Superior Traffic Report since introducing it at the beginning of the month. I see there must be smooth sailing, as quite a few boats are out and about.

This weekend we are completing plans for the holiday Pasty shipping schedule. Hard to believe this year has slipped by so fast! Thanks to all who help keep our daily "glimpse of life in the U.P." coming as a result of your regular orders of a taste of the U.P.

Have a good week :o)

What a terrible, terrible tragedy!

I believe you mis-typed there Charlie; wasn't that storm in 1913???
Thanks, Capt., it has since been corrected

My Grandmother, who was 5 at the time, remembered that storm to her dying day. She remembered her Father saying, in his thick Scottish tongue, something to the effect of not seeing a storm like that since he was a boy in the Highlands. He was amazed that "lakes" could whip up a fury such as that....

A number of years ago, there was a great History Channel presentation on that particular storm in 1913. Once in a while they show it and if you happen to see it listed, by all means watch it because it is good.

A very sad day for the Great Lakes sailors.

I love the Lake Superior Marine Traffic Report. I can see if a ship or ships are going by our cottage and imagine seeing it in person. I especially like imagning the ones at night. I even bought the i-phone app, thinking I could identify the ships when I am there. But I had forgotten that I don't get at&t cell phone coverage at our cottage! Maybe someday!

There is also an excellent book about this storm titled, appropriately, WHITE HURRICANE. The winds today down here on the prairie are trying to match that storm.

I do not remember hearing about a Hurricane but my
Grandfathers first wife and two daughters were
killed in the Italian hall. I have read many books
on the Hall Disaster and really felt strange
seeing their names in there . Theresa

Strong winds in the Ohio Valley today, also.

By JAD, Orgnst (Jandalq) on Sunday, November 13, 2011 - 06:32 pm:

Re the link on ships in the Great Lakes my brother from CO noted that all the ships were heading north. My brother from MN suggested that the CO brother stand on his head--then all ships would be headed south. CO brother then commented that if he stood on his head all the lake water would be heading into the Mississippi and Yoopers would not like that.
