• Veteran's Day-What'sUP November 11 - 09:43 pm

Today is the day we honor Veterans, both living and deceased, for their service to our country. So earlier in the week, before snow hit the Keweenaw and much of the U.P., these two scenes had caught my eye as the perfect way to honor these brave men and women.

The first shot was taken in Laurium and is a beautiful tribute cut out and painted, to honor those of our military that sacrificed everything for all of us Americans to live here with all the freedoms we enjoy. Then, passing by the Ferrellgas property in Laurium, I noticed the yellow ribbon, saying "Support our Troops", painted on the large propane tank, along with the poster hung on the fence. Nicely done, for sure. But, since we've been "enjoying" the first snow here UP North the last few days, I had to go searching for something appropriate to honor our Veterans, showing our snowy conditions. I found this one from Brenda Leigh. Even though it was taken in a previous year, it represents what it looks like in various places across the U.P. today.

Be sure to fly your flag today and thank a Veteran for their willingness to serve our country. While you're at it, thank their families, too. They also made sacrifices while there family member was gone off defending our freedoms.

Thanks to each and every person who has served our country and those who are presently serving. I would like to extend this gratitude to all their families as well. What a sacrifice for our freedom!

Thank You to the late, Sgt. R.L. Johnson, U.S. Army, (my Dad) for your WWII commitment, and to my nephew Sgt. James T. Johnson, U.S. Marine Corps for your 2 frontline Iraq deployments! Making America #1!!

My Father served over 30 years between the Army and National Guard, including a time in SE Asia during Vietnam. Usually we visit him and my Mom and take them out to dinner around Veteran's Day, but this year we couldn't make it (house sitting/dog sitting the entire month of November for another Veteran). Honour all military men and women on this their day, whether active or retired; they are what makes America great!!!

Remembering my husband, Frank, who served our country during the Korean War. Thankfully he wasn't in combat but 'he did his duty' in the U.S. Navy! Thank you, Honey! May God bless them all.

And today, I want to shout out to all the Patriot Guard Riders as well....those are the folks protecting our Veterans when they come home...either with us or not....Thank you PGR!!

And today is a very powerful day in the metaphysical world....please pray for Love, Happiness, Abundance, Health, etc...Think loving thoughts all day...God Bless!

I will echo what everybody else has said. Thanks to all the veterans out there who either died in combat, or returned home, having to live with everything that went on wherever they were. Thinking of my father, husband, and 2 of my sons, who all served in the US Navy!! Thank you guys for everything you did. None of them actually saw any action, but did their duty nonetheless. My dad was on one of the first ships to be in Japan after the war was over. He said it was a beautiful country, and that it was all just such a shame. He was only 17 years old, quit high school to join the Navy, came back and finished high school. These guys all wanted to help win the war. Hats off to each and every one of you, and your families!!

Oh, and the pictures are wonderful!!

Thanks to all who have served or are serving our country. This includes my husband who served in the Air Force and my nephew who is serving in Korea now and all who have made the ultimate sacrifice thank you.

I just read a story in The Detroit Free Press. A lady maintains the supply of flags at, The Great Lakes Cemetery in Holly Township, Mi.. Each week a bundle of 15-20 cotton or nylon flags in need of repair are dropped off at her home and she mends them when needed.

She is a widow of a Navy vet.

Reminds me of how people try and do what they can, when they can...

To all our veterans, past and present, "Thank You, for your service and keeping us safe".

I forgot to mention in my previous posting, the flags the lady sews amd maintains are flown inside the entrance to the Great Lakes Cemetery.

Tom Fisher sent me an email a few days ago with a request to post the following information and links for him. He said he wouldn't be able to himself, due to being away from his computer today, as he and his family lay to final rest their father, Julius B. Fisher, a B-25 pilot who flew 30 missions in the Pacific, and later retired a full Colonel from the USAFR. The service will take place at 11:00 a.m., today and Tom said he'd really love to see this video posted today, in his remembrance.

Although of Canadian origin, it speaks to all veterans of all nationalities. Though not so much with those living in the copper country, many others tend to forget how their lives have been made easier by those who served in time of need, and especially those who gave the last full measure and did not return.

I loved the pictures today. The silhouette is my background on the computer to show those at work where I stand. I wish I had one to place in front of my house. Your support to the troops means so much to those of us who have served and are serving. Thank you!!!

Tom Fisher: Thanks for posting those links. It IS a powerful video.
We showed it to our students yesterday and it helped them to be
ready for our trip to Queen's Park (Ontario Legislative Building) for
the Remembrance Day ceremony. The two minutes didn't seem like
eternity to my students once they had seen the video. People
placed poppies on a special wreath at the end of the ceremony. I
placed one on the Canadian wreath and one on the wreath from the
American Consulate in honor of my son, Matthew.

Rest in Peace, Julius Fisher.
