Here in the U.P., with the month of November upon us, we know that the beginnings of snowflakes in the air and settling on the ground isn't too far off. David Antikainen snapped this shot from somewhere on the Cliffs up near Phoenix. My guess is from Elmo's tower. No matter where he was standing, it sure is a great vantage point to look over the area and up US41/M26. Question. The house in the bottom left hand corner. Has that always been there or are there neighbors starting to move in? When I switched the calendar to November I wasn't even sure the picture was Cliff Drive (Yeah. I know. Crazy. How could it not be?) That house threw me off. After a double take and having stood in or very near the spot where the picture was taken I knew but I'm still curious about the house.

Won't be long now. Good for those business owners who thrive on snow lovers.

Funny, I'm staring at that same photo on my office wall this morning. I've already had one person ask if that was somewhere in Colorado. I said nope, it's Upper Michigan and they said straight faced "I didn't know there were mountains there; I always thought it was flat!"

Go figure.....

Capt. Paul, I was much the same as that 'person', 'til we move to Charlevoix I had the idea that Michigan was somewhat mountainless. Beautiful snowy scene, but cold-looking! Had 28 degrees this morning on my backporch....really doing a number on my old arthritic body.:<

Also...isn't the Vansville bar, the ONLY bar left in Michigan where you can purchase a bottle of booze? I believe they have been "grandfathered" in with the old liquor license they own......Correct me if I'm wrong...

A nice picture indeed. As a young lad I joined the Michigan National Guard in Calumet and we would have rifle practice/awards at the Cliffs range. We would bivuac for a night or so and remember us brave souls scaling to the top of the "MOUNTAINS" as shown in the background. It was scary, being a Flatlander from Hubbell.

I hate to burst anyone's bubble, but those are not mountains. In Colorado, we would refer to those as speed bumps, and that is being generous.

Quite unusual that here in CT we got our first snowstorm of the season before snow arrived in the UP! Still over 600,000 homes in CT alone without power as of this morning, more than in the aftermath of Tropical Storm Irene......think I'll move back to the UP! They trim trees overhanging power lines there! It is a genuine mess in this part of the country, at least the temps are near 50 so the crews can do their work. Wish us luck!!

Gary it's all in your point of view hey? Had a smart-alec son-in-law that always made cocky remarks about us Illionians being from the 'flatlands'. Til my daughter took him for a ride around here cruising the hills along the Mississippi. No more smart remarks, at least along that line.I've been to the Rockies and the Alleghenies among others and they all have their beauty.

I agree with Kay. Every place has its surprises. I've heard it said a mountain is something that rises 1000 feet higher than the base elevation. Those ridges rise about 868 feet from Lake Superior. So though technically not mountains there is a very special quality to them.

All things are relative. 75% of Colorado would fit in just 3 of our lakes (technically 2 because Huron-Michigan are considered 1 lake) Yet the lakes in Colorado are still lakes--and very pretty ones I might add! Just small lakes :)

Hey, in Tennessee those would also be just big hills, but everybody to their own interpretation of elevations, I say. Still pretty!:)

Love them Mississippi Bluffs! The snowmobile trails in those bluffs make for excellent snowmobiling!

I live in Colorado and the lack of lakes is why I am "Sometimes Yooper". Well, that, and I grew up in Yooperland. I live to return to the lake.
