After the dandy wind storm and rain we've been having around the shores of Lake Superior, there are only a few trees still hanging onto their leaves, mostly poplar trees, is what I've noticed. But don't let that stop you from getting outside to explore. It's this time of year, with all the leaves blanketing the ground, that you get a better view of your surroundings, like in these photos of the Dead River Falls, taken by Tom Cook. It's nice that the pines stay green, so we don't lose all the color this time of year.

It's been too long since i was there ~ some day...

Good Morning. I love today's photos! I second Jbuck's comment. The first one is gorgeous. Thank you, Jbuck and Mary.

I third what Jbuck says!! Those colors are spectacular!! What a combo.

Thanks Tom!!

Fabulous!! Just be careful...the leaves on the ground make for some slippery travels!

Doesn't get much better.

They were known as Stone's Mill Falls and are near Forestville in Marquette. Before the WW II my folks were looking for them and stopped to ask a road worker where they were and he said "You can't thar from here!"

Pretty red leaves, and beautiful water! BTW, hafta wonder how Dead River got its name?

By Helen Marie Chamberlain (Helen) on Thursday, October 20, 2011 - 09:17 am:

Captured a lot of beauty in those two shots, Tom. Beautiful.
Thank you!

The Day in History rang a bell for me. I happen to own the clock from the Rock of Ages lighthouse. It was retired from service in 1924. Could have been in service the time of the wreck mentioned today.

Jbuck, help me out, is this the place I use to swing off a rope and dive into the falls? I remember it being colder than Lake Superior. Certainly needed self induced antifreeze! lol

By Uncle Chuck (Unclechuck) on Thursday, October 20, 2011 - 02:09 pm:

BTW, It was great fun, oh to be 20 years old again, lmao!

The U.P. is so beautiful in the Autumn.

By Hilarie Alwine (Halwine) on Thursday, October 20, 2011 - 04:55 pm:

These falls are beautiful to look at, but you do need to hike a little! There is a great place to swim/jump during the summer of course. But you can locate them off of Wright Street in Marquette. I can't give you better directions because I don't know street names. But they're relatively easy to find.

By jbuck (Jbuck) on Thursday, October 20, 2011 - 07:35 pm:

Hey UC,

Yes, i think it is!

We found it early on ~ went there in my Hiking class (gotta love the NMU classes!) about a month after getting to campus. As Hilarie says, we got there via Wright Street.

Yes U.C., but without the zits.

By Danielle L. Adams (Badkid) on Thursday, October 20, 2011 - 11:41 pm:

Great pics! Love the colors, but I am glad I am not in that water as it would be ice cold!!

I will have pictures here tomorrow, and I did get a lil wet in the process of taking them lol

By Uncle Chuck (Unclechuck) on Friday, October 21, 2011 - 07:25 am:

Alex brother, no zits on my mug!
