Good Morning, on a gorgeous fall day here in Michigan!

By Mary Drew at Pasty Central (Mdrew) on Tuesday, October 4, 2011 - 08:30 am:

Tracey Barrett was out and about in Baraga County, exploring the new trail head that takes you to the highest point in Michigan, atop Mount Arvon. According to Tracey, it's just a short walk north, about 5 minutes and you're at the top, taking in the beautiful vista laid out before you. The fall colors were popping out that day, along the vast expanse of woods leading out to Lake Superior. What a great spot to stop and appreciate the beauty that surrounds us here UP North.

By Donna (Donna) on Tuesday, October 4, 2011 - 08:33 am:

WOW!

By Stewart Keskitalo (Skeskitalo) on Tuesday, October 4, 2011 - 08:44 am:

Another gem of the UP. I didn't know about it.

By Marsha, Genesee/Aura (Marsha) on Tuesday, October 4, 2011 - 08:51 am:

It's largely because of Tracey that we can now easily hike up there! Guess I'll have to add another trip up Mt. Arvon to my plans for this weekend when I'm UP!

By Helen Marie Chamberlain (Helen) on Tuesday, October 4, 2011 - 09:16 am:

Beautiful picture. For some reason, was told years ago by someone you couldn't get up there. Huh! Will have to check into this one!
Thank you, Tracey.

By JoAnne Stefanac (Davejostef) on Tuesday, October 4, 2011 - 09:30 am:

Curious minds want to know, what is the height of the highest point in Michigan?

By mickill mouse (Ram4) on Tuesday, October 4, 2011 - 09:38 am:

According to wikapedia, Mt. Arvon is the highest point in Michigan at 1,979 feet.

By mickill mouse (Ram4) on Tuesday, October 4, 2011 - 09:40 am:

Anybody feel free to correct me and that way I will also be informed about the highest point in Michigan. (*_*)

By David C Cloutier (Dccloutier) on Tuesday, October 4, 2011 - 09:47 am:

You are correct - according to the source I checked. Here is a link to a source that provides the highest points in every state:

http://geology.com/state-high-points.shtml

By Shirley Waggoner (Shirlohio) on Tuesday, October 4, 2011 - 09:48 am:

What a beautiful little girl, Tracey, and what a beautiful vista! Thanks for sharing both!

By Marsha, Genesee/Aura (Marsha) on Tuesday, October 4, 2011 - 10:10 am:

Mt. Arvon is 11 inches higher than Mt. Curwood. So I figure if you own property on Mt. Curwood and want to have your mountain be the tallest, you could just carry a few bags of dirt up and there you go!

By James Alain (Charlevoix) on Tuesday, October 4, 2011 - 10:21 am:

Up until the 1950s, Government Peak in the Porcupine Mtns was designated Michigan's high spot, at slightly over 2000' above sea level. Things were remeasured and resurveyed, and Mt Curwood in ne Baraga Co was named the high point at 1981'; apparently Government Peak wasn't as high as was thought. Then in the 1980s things were again resurveyed, etc with the determination that Mt Arvon was the state's highest point, at 1978" with Mt Curwood actually 11 inched lower. If nothing else, Michigan is probably the only state in the country with a moving high point!

By Matt Van Arsdale (Xgamer13) on Tuesday, October 4, 2011 - 10:21 am:

5 Minutes is a bit of an understatement. It was about 15 uphill,
while swinging at the swarms of mosquitoes. Mont Arvon is
Michigan's Highest Natural Point (Hint Hint). The title of Michigan's
Highest Point has been taken over by something else (not a
building). Access to this New High point can now only be reached
by trespassing. Anyone Want to guess what Michigan's HIghest
Point now is?

By Shirley Waggoner (Shirlohio) on Tuesday, October 4, 2011 - 10:22 am:

Thanks, 'Dccloutier', that's an interesting site. Clingman's Dome is the highest point in my homestate...never been completely to the top, but "pert near"!;-D

By Bob Williams (Wabbit) on Tuesday, October 4, 2011 - 11:17 am:

Matt, I would guess it is the poor rock pile at the Empire Mine near Palmer

By Taana Kalliainen (Taanarae) on Tuesday, October 4, 2011 - 11:38 am:

Shirley, I climbed to the top of the look-out at Clingman's Dome in May. That's quite the hike for only a 1/2 mile! :D

By Heikki (Heikki) on Tuesday, October 4, 2011 - 11:42 am:

I agree with Bob, Matt. 3-5 yrs ago I heard "Mt. Tilden" was 3" highr than Mt. Arvon. Nothing official, just from a good source. Would be interesting to find official measurement data on this.

By jbuck (Jbuck) on Tuesday, October 4, 2011 - 01:15 pm:

I was thinking the same thing as Bob too.

By JH (Thumbgardener) on Tuesday, October 4, 2011 - 01:40 pm:

Marsha, that was funny! Great idea, but then someone might add more dirt to Mt Arvon and that could be the start of a height war.

Nice pictures and Tracey has some great pictures in her album.

By Thomas Baird (Thomas) on Tuesday, October 4, 2011 - 02:33 pm:

Keep those beautiful Autumn pics coming! Also, I want to wish my birth mother a Happy Birthday, today.

By Shirley Waggoner (Shirlohio) on Tuesday, October 4, 2011 - 02:34 pm:

You're right, Taana, the last part is so steep, it's almost best done on hands and knees! whewwww There may have been some improvements...but when I tried it, it was way back in the 1960s....and I was a very young woman.:p

By Hollidays (Hollybranches) on Tuesday, October 4, 2011 - 04:10 pm:

Matt, it's got to be Kid Rock's ego. :)

By Danielle L. Adams (Badkid) on Tuesday, October 4, 2011 - 04:17 pm:

Great pictures! I have never been to this place. Maybe I will have to check it out on a day off.

By Hollidays (Hollybranches) on Tuesday, October 4, 2011 - 04:43 pm:

Been to the Huron Mountains, they are something worth visiting.

By Helen in the U. P.! (Lahelo) on Tuesday, October 4, 2011 - 05:08 pm:

Zman and I climbed up to Mt. Arvon a few years back. Just a spectacular sight! All the beauty is around you way up there!

By Capt. Paul (Eclogite) on Tuesday, October 4, 2011 - 06:40 pm:

Not only have I climbed all over Mt. Arvon, I have also mapped the entire thing; it is one of the projects in Field Geology at Tech. J

By jbuck (Jbuck) on Tuesday, October 4, 2011 - 07:28 pm:

So, Capt Paul, what are the most significant factors with Mt. Arvon's geology?

By Capt. Paul (Eclogite) on Tuesday, October 4, 2011 - 08:17 pm:

Mostly the same as the rest of the Huron Mountains; granites and metamorphics.

By mickill mouse (Ram4) on Tuesday, October 4, 2011 - 08:18 pm:

GO GET EM' TIGERS..

By Alex "UP-Goldwinger" (Alex) on Tuesday, October 4, 2011 - 08:29 pm:

My man, Capt. Paul…so were you able to solve the mystery about the height?

I know that Bare Bluff is not the the highest point in the UP by far, but if you have ever made the hike, walked out on that bluff and saw Superior as far as the eye can see, well...you know what I mean.

Clingman’s Dome: walked to the platform many a time...good workout, for sure. I figure the year I cannot make it to the top is the year I will have to give up the Wing.

Speaking of TN, has anyone heard from David Hiltunian in a while? I have not seen him chime in lately.

By JoAnne Stefanac (Davejostef) on Wednesday, October 5, 2011 - 09:30 am:

1,979? That's it? Geez, that's not even considered a foothill here in Washington state. LOL Our highest point is Mt. Rainier at 14,410 feet. With numerous others just below that. High enough to see snow up there year 'round. As I do a little research, looks like Mt. Rainier is the 4th. highest in the country behind peaks in Alaska, California and Colorado. Huh, learn something new every day, I guess.

By Shirley Waggoner (Shirlohio) on Wednesday, October 5, 2011 - 09:37 am:

Alex, I've often wondered about David too....seems he was going to move back up north, if memory serves me correctly.

By FRNash/PHX, AZ (Frnash) on Wednesday, October 5, 2011 - 12:54 pm:

Yes, David Hiltunen (Davidcorrytontn) moved back to Lake Linden in May of 2010. Apparently he was last on here in early May, 2011. See (click → ) Dave's note of May 7, 2011

Dave, where are you? I hope all's well with you!

By Michael Du Long (Mikie) on Wednesday, October 5, 2011 - 10:37 pm:

I talked to him and saw him at the Legion in Lake Linden last October. He looked good and was enjoying Lake Linden. He is a regular on face book.

By David Hiltunen (Davidcorrytontn) on Wednesday, October 5, 2011 - 11:14 pm:

Thanks for wondering about me.. I am in Lake Linden & I am well..

By Rowdy (Roudymi) on Friday, October 7, 2011 - 12:59 am:

you can see it from Jacobsville too!
