When E. Neil Harri sent in the first photo, showing the color around Mirror Lake in the Porcupine Mountains back-country , he added a note saying, "Color is getting nice inland, but had a lot of green closer to the Big Lake." So, I asked if he had any shots showing the green, as you get closer to Lake Superior and he sent the second shot, looking at Lake of the Clouds in the Porkies. These pictures are the perfect example of what I've been saying about the colors here in the U.P. lately. There can be oodles of leaves changed in one area, but another area might only have a few colors showing up. The trees that are closer to Lake Superior, seem to turn later than the inland areas, maybe having to do with the cooler temperatures near the cold waters of the Big Lake.
Thanks for illustrating the contrast of the color show here UP North, Neil!

I went to take a spin yesterday around Dynamite Hill area...I was surprised there's still as much green as there is. It'll be peak in a couple of days though.
Great pictures...as usual! Neil..yer good!

Just the opposite, Mary. It is because of the warming effect the Lake has on overnight temperatures closer to the coast. It also has to do with elevation and distance away from those moderating effects. The fall colours will usually show up sooner in the higher elevations away from the Lake than right on the shoreline because of the more abrupt contrasts between day and night temperatures in the inland areas.
Yeah, sure, Capt. Paul, does to me.;-) Mr Harri's first photo really rivals Saturday's autumn pic. All beautiful UP north!

Sorry I haven't been here in a while! Life's been crazy. I think I work too much lol
Thanks for all the great comments about my pictures. I made several trips to the ore docks this year. Well just made them go there when I was in Marquette just so they'd shut me up lol
I will have more pictures. I am waiting to find out when the salt boat is due in Hancock. There's been nothing on boatnerd, so maybe one of you here can give me some insight?!
Thanks. Danielle
And P.S. - Nope, I am really not a badkid haha! If some of ya'll stopped at Shopko, you may have seen me working lol That's where I have been, and not here enough!!
