Meet Mat Moyle and Nicky Trevathan. A couple of Copper Country sounding names to be sure... but you may be as surprised as I was to discover they're not from around here. You've probably seen this picture in Keweenaw narratives about mining history, in books about early miners, even in a cameo here at Pasty Central entitled, "Let There Be Light".
The pair first appeared in Harper's New Monthly Magazine in August of 1857 in an article about Gold Mining operations in North Carolina. You can read the whole article and see the other interesting pencil sketches at the D. H. Ramsey Library Special Collections, University of North Carolina at Asheville.
You can't help but wonder... when the gold played out in Carolina, did Mat and Nicky hop a train bound for Northern Michigan, and continue their career as a drilling team in Copper Country mines? Possibly a topic for a new series of historical fiction, if we have any aspiring authors among our Shoebox Memory visitors this fine morning.
Beautiful colors here in the Keweenaw today. It'll probably be at its peak before next Sunday.
I like their hats!

Thanks for the color update Charlie; my wife Diane and I hope to head that way Tuesday to spend a few days in the Copper Country!

I wish I could head UP, but I am LP land-locked until after the 15th. (Do you know where your 1040 is?)

"UP-Goldwinger", did you really have to spoil the day? :-) Taxes?? Pretty spiffy-lookin' fellas...if they're rebel-miners, they shoulda left well enough alone! <spoken by a died-in-the-wool-civil-war-ain't-over-yet southerner!:D

"Matti Poika" might be more appropriate for this Pasty Cam. (That is what my Grandmother called me when I was a lad and lived in Franklin Twp., Houghton County.)

I have to go with Nick. My dad was born 'Matias Robert Nakkula' (Matti) then had the name legally changed to 'Robert Matthew Nash' circa 1948. (Although I'll admit that to an untrained ear, 'Matti' probably would sound quite close to 'Mutti', although the letters 'i' and 'u' really do sound different in Finnish!)

I call my beagle "Mutti" at times, though I'm not in the least Finnish. He'll answer to anything with food involved as will I!
